PLEASE tell me this isn't pink eye - Help please!!!

coasterqueen wrote: Kylie is sick with a sore throat, very croupie cough and very runny (greenish yellow) nose. No fever so far. Anyways, just tonight I noticed goop in the corner of one of her eyes. I've wiped it away 3 times in about a 5 hour period I guess, maybe less than that. It look like sleep IMO, but I've never seen her with sleep in her eyes.

PLEASE tell me this isn't pink eye. sad.gif I don't even know what the heck pink eye is but if my memory serves me isn't it like a cold in the eye. Like children can get it from wiping snot from their noses and then wiping their eyes, right?

Kylie has never tried to wipe her runny noses or each touch it, she'll ask us to do it. But the last two days she's been wiping the crud out of her nose because I find dried YUCK on her hands and I'm sure it's possible she's turned around and wiped her eyes too. UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, what in the world do I do for a croupie cough? I'm so afraid it's going to turn into something worse since she can't spit anything up. I've been giving her Pediacare (I think that's what it is, Dh started giving it, so I don't remember the name blush.gif ). The stuff is supposed to be for her cough and nose.

I just hate taking her to the doc to get antibiotics if this is just something that really needs to just run it's course, ya know. I'm not a firm believer in giving antibiotics for every tiny sickness as I don't want her body to become immune to them later.

HELP!

ediep replied: sorry that she isn't feeling well. I think pink eye would look kinf of bloodshot and maybe red and puffy in the corner. I would be really ichy. Jason had a minor eye infection last year and the doc said it might have been from just touching his eye with his hand, It was swollen almost swollen shut. The doc gave him antibiotics and it was gone in 2-3 days.
Good luck

MomToJade&Jordan replied: Is her eye red and watering as well? Has she been rubbing it a lot? Pink eye will actually make the eye look a pinkish color and itch. I was looking around on the internet and I didn't find anything about getting pink eye from wiping snot in the eye. Here's a website I found about Pink eye.

Pink Eye in Children

And another:

Pink Eye

I hope these are helpful. It's possible that the discharge is being caused by the cold. I sure do hope so.

This is what I found about the croupie cough:

Children and Croup

I hope she gets to feeling better soon and you as well.

loveydad replied: Pink eye hurts really really really bad. At leats when my son had it he said it did.

coasterqueen replied: Once again Carrie Ann thanks. biggrin.gif Can you tell my child hasn't been sick most of her life so I'm freaking out more than I should be at this age? tongue.gif

I knew about putting them in a room with steam for croup but I wasn't for sure about the cool misters. Cool, so I will use a cool mister tonight. I wondered about it last night and DH looked at me like "iiiiiiii'm not for sure we should do that". Of course I didn't think to look on the net either. rolleyes.gif Between this pg and being sick myself I'm GONE. happy.gif

As far as the eyes, that one might be a teensy red but that could be from me rubbing the drainage out of it and then her freaking out by me doing that and then her rubbing it. rolleyes.gif So I'll just keep an eye on it tonight.

I PRAY it's not pink eye because I'm not sure I can get out of my meeting tomorrow and Dh is out of town and I figure as long as she's not running a fever I'd send her to daycare. But now the thought of doing that is making me feel guilty. blush.gif Although, besides the runny nose and occasional cough you'd never know she was sick. rolleyes.gif Why can't adults feel that way when they are sick? rolleyes.gif

Again thanks! You are a lifesaver.

MomToJade&Jordan replied: Anytime Karen! biggrin.gif

MommyToAshley replied: Oh no, poor Kylie. I am sorry she is not feeling well. grouphug.gif It doesn't sound like pinkeye to me, but I know when I have a cold, I get more drainage in my eyes.

I hope the vaporizers helps her to feel better. grouphug.gif

maestra replied: Giselle just had this same kind of drainage today, and her eye area was even a little swollen and she had some strings of mucus. Knowing how contagious pink eye is, I called the doc on call. Basically there is nothing that can do with a baby that young without seeing her. She already has an appointment tomorrow.

But don't you know it, 10 minutes after I call, the eye is all better and there is no more drainage. So I guess it wasn't pink eye.

Oh- and yes, that's how you get pink eye. My ped confirmed it today- that's how they figure Giselle would have gotten it, rubbing her little fist by her nose (she has a cold) and then rubbing her eyes. grouphug.gif

coasterqueen replied:
Well I think she DOES have pink eye. sad.gif She woke up at 4 am crying and when I turned on the light her eye was COMPLETELY matted shut. I got it open with a warm wash cloth, but barely and it's all pink and watery today. bawling.gif bawling.gif

I can't take this anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sad.gif

MomToMany replied: sad.gif So sorry Kylie is sick Karen. I hope she gets feeling better soon. That's always so hard to deal with on top of work and being PG. Poor girl sad.gif .

Kaitlin'smom replied: awww poor Kylie and mommy I hope she feels better soon. sad.gif I hate when little ones are sick

mummy2girls replied: I know im late in responding but jenna gets that goopp all the time with nasty colds. The doc said an plugged eye duct. And its the same duct that was plugged sionce from birth.

The croupy cough... The cool mist does help as carrie said. What i also do is this... Jenna has a kids tent and it fits inside the house. I put a cool mist in the tent with jenna and close the door(and i sleep in there also) and by morning the croopiness is gone. My mom told me this trick because my brother use to always get croup. but what she did is make a tent from sheets...LOL.

I hope she is feeling better!

Sunflower04 replied: Joey gets the mucus looking stuff in his eyes alot from pink eye. He is in daycare too and so it gets it alot from there. Didn't you say the daycare provider herself gets pinkeye alot?

You would never know he would have it if he didn't have stuff leaking out. He doesn't complain but his eye is sealed close with the crust when he wakes from sleep.

All they are going to do is give you eye drops for it and it will clear up fast. What I do is hold onto the drops and when I see a sign of pink eye I give him the drops. If you get the drops today she will be fine within hours. Good luck and I hope she feels better fast. thumb.gif

My2Beauties replied: sad.gif I was going to say I had pink eye a couple times as a child from other children at school and it sounds like she does have it. That is how it starts out then your other post kind of confimred it to me because of the eye being red and matted shut! That is the most painful thing about pink eye!

Everyone is right though, those drops make it go away really really fast! I hope Kylie gets to feeling better! sad.gif

mumof2little1's replied: It could also be a sign of ear infections. My son had this problem in both ears. He had 2 bad ear infections. His eyes where red in the white areas and he had greenish puss in the corners and i would wipe it out and it came right back. I thought it was pink eye too. It cleared right up a few days after he begin his medicene

coasterqueen replied:
Thanks. She was actually diagnosed with pink eye but we are still thinking it's more of an allergy.

She's only had 2 minor ear infections and they were outer ear from swimming. We've been very lucky there.
