Pessos for Pizza?

Crystalina wrote: Has anyone else heard of this? A pizza place in Dallas is now accepting pessos. unsure.gif

My thoughts are pretty simple...I don't like it at all. If it stays right there (at that one particular business )I can see but if this catches on and spreads through our country as "Hey! let's do that also." then I don't like that at all. I don't even know if I have a good reason not to like it except that I don't. I know it sounds dumb. I think pessos should stay in Mexico. dry.gif

mom2my2cuties replied: There are actually several business in Dallas (And around the country for that matter) that will take all forms of not only Mexican money but all nations money. But they still have to equal the amount in US dollars.

mckayleesmom replied: I don't know....it doesn't bug me....Its actually smart business practices in my mind....especially if they take all forms of currency...Think of all the people that go on vacation to other countries and bring back money they forgot to convert before comming back....Taking the family to pizza would be a nice way to spend the money.

CantWait replied: Well it's just like Canada. We accept American money. dunno.gif

Calimama replied: Interesting, but like said above I guess it's like Canada.

kit_kats_mom replied: Most of the places near the Canadian border accept Canadian money right? The only reason I can think of that people has a problem out of it is because it's Mexicans who some see as a drain on our economy. If that's the case, well....they are injecting money into our system with pesos so whatever. I have no problem with it at all. We toss the words "global economy" and "global everything" around all the time but we get ticked when a company accepts a foreign currency? blink.gif

Kentuckychick replied:
EXACTLY!!!!

It's America, the land of the FREE, who cares what kind of money they spend, it's bringing money into our country

We, as Americans think that we should have the right to go to ANY country we want in the world and be accepted no matter what, because we are Americans. I personally know many business individuals who moved to other countries for several years and had NO clue how to speak that language, to count their money, or to act like a "civil" being there and yet, they expected everyone there to just open up to the idea of them coming. As Americans we can just get a passport and go ANYWHERE we want and if you think about that, it's not fair. We AREN'T better than everyone else. We're all humans...

It's sickening really

JadensMama05 replied: Well.. I agree with you Crystal. Not because I have anything against Mexicans, I've got some really amazing Mexican friends and am in no way prejudice. I just don't like the idea of other currency being used in some parts of the country. I understand that it might make sense in Texas but what if somehow I came upon a bunch of pessos? Well that wouldn't get me anywhere in Milwaukee.. as far as I know. I just think that if we're all gonna accept each other's currency, we might as well just have one for the whole world. What's the point of having different ones anyway?

Hillbilly Housewife replied: Hehe heheh... well for those of you who don't like the idea of other money being used in the States... I can assure you you won't like having to go exchange your currency if you come to Canada.

Oh wait, we accept American money. tongue.gif

CantWait replied:
Actually it's not just borderwise, no matter where in Canada. Most places even have a button on the cash to convert the currency, not that it works half the time because of the constant fluctuation.

Crystalina replied:

huh.gif Huh? I don't ever remember saying anything about being rude or not civil to anyone who is not American. I, for one, would be the very last person to be rude to anyone from another country seeing as how I'm 90% Puerto Rican and 10% German. unsure.gif My Grandparents, as a matter of fact, were the first "Americanized" people in our family so my family being here is pretty fresh. wink.gif

I've lived in Germany and I never used American money outside of the Army base. I didn't think there was anything wrong with that at all. And how hard is it really to go to a bank and exchange your money? I've done it before. Sometimes it takes a day or two for certain kinds of money but I'm sure for pessos in Texas it won't take long at all.

I'm sorry, I just think that if you live in this country then you should speak our language and use our money. Period. Yes we are a melting pot but when do we draw the line? Why come to America and live in America if you are not going to abide by Amrican ways? Oh, I know why...your only here because of our jobs and insurance....gotcha! wink.gif

I can see if you are new to our country and you need a few years to adjust and I never think you should give up any tradition or religion you have but if you are going to live here is it so much to ask to speak our language and use our currency? I don't think so. When in Rome....

This is just my opinion and I don't expect to change anyones mind as to how they think.

Kentuckychick replied: Sorry Crystalina, didn't mean to sound harsh to you, that wasn't a reply to your individual post... just to the whole situation in general. I mean, people boycotting the restuarant because of it, it's all just really sad. The basic point is, okay, so they except pessos... is it really that big of a deal. People are afraid that it will start happening all over the country... it won't. Maybe they are just a restuarant who gets a TON of mexican patrons and they want to make it easy for them? No big deal. Perhaps also, some aren't aware of how easy it is to exchange money and they're hungry and they don't have time to wait for the exchange to go through?

I agree that individuals who want to move here and live here should eventually learn the language, but it takes time. My point about us going to other countries is that we don't seem to feel like we should have to learn and understand those languages before we go, so we shouldn't expect them to be able to do so either and yet we get so frustrated when they don't.

As for Rome... just remember,
It wasn't built in a day wink.gif

Crystalina replied:

And I'm not so sure about it not catching on and spreading throughout the country because in the second post down it was mentioned that there are other places throughout the country that do this. I've only heard of this pizza place but I'm sure the statement would not have been made if it weren't true. I can see areas around the border doing this for the whole money exchange but for it to carry on outside those areas shouldn't happen.

And I agree with you that if you are going to another country you should learn the language but if you are not planning on living there then other then learning "where is the bathroom?" I don't think that you should have to learn the language. I for one would at least try just because I would love to learn more but I would not whip a tourist for not knowing. But if you're going to set up shop in a country then yes, learn the darn language.

BTW, don't take the fact that I'm repsonding to your post as a negative against you. We all have our own opinions on things and I love that you stated yours. hug.gif hug.gif hug.gif hug.gif

I agree with you there. And for the travel to Canada reference, usually the conversion is for people that are visiting, if someone was going to move there I would expect them to adapt the Canadien currency system. If you are going to live in the country then I think it is your responsibility to adapt to the country via language, currency, taxes, etc because you are a citizen (yes I believe you should have citizenship if you live there permanently) of that country. Do I think you should give up your heritage etc no, but you have to be able to effectively communicate within your country and I think when the country you move to adapts to you, that is wrong. JMHO and I don't mean to offend anyone with this regardless of ethnicity etc.

Crystalina replied:

rolling_smile.gif
That reminds me of an episode of Hogan Knows Best I watched yesterday. The Hogans moved to Miami and need to learn Spanish just to be able to communicate and they make the statement that they feel like they are in another country. happy.gif Now Miami of course is a heavily populated Latin area (I have family there) and it's kind of expected but the sad thing is that most of the residants there are residants and not tourists. They don't even really try to speak the language because in that area they have what they need and are understood. Whatever, it's a nice area for Americans to go to feel like they've stepped out of the country for a minute but to spread that across the country is wrong.

TheOaf66 replied:
I live near Milwaukee and we have a pretty heavy latin population too and I don't really care for the fact that they are now printing billboards here in Spanish and a lot of businesses have english and spanish signs etc. I used to work with a lot of latin guys at a restaurant and the majority of them spoke both english and spanish and I got along with them great, there were a couple that refused to learn english so I always had to find someone to interpret for me they were the ones I had a problem with because it made it harder for me to do my job. If other ethnicities want to live in America more power to them I have no problem as long as they get citizenship, learn the language, pay taxes, and etc etc
