Pics of Cade - at 1st Jiu-Jitsu Tournament
mammag wrote: Cade had his first Jiu-Jitsu tournament Saturday. It was fun......a little nerve wracking on poor mom but.....fun nevertheless. He did really well. It was so hot in there with all those people.
Here are just a few of the pics we took...
These are the kids who showed up from Cade's school. It is a relatively new school (as far as kids classes) so there was only 5 of them. Cade's in the middle...

Great pictures! He is so handsome!
mammag replied: Cade loves it but Jiu-Jitsu is quite a bit different than Karate....it's closer to wrestling as it's all done on the ground. I would highly recommend looking into it if you have a school in your area.... if not that, I think Judo is the next best thing. I like it because it is more realitstically usuable for self defense.
Cade has been in it since Sept. I believe and he gets really disappointed if we have to miss a class.

DansMom replied: Oh, those are great action shots! Good job Mom!
uwishucudfly replied: YAY CADE!! He looks like he had a great time! What exactly Jiu Jitsu? I know almost nothing about martial arts...but I would like Devin to start something. He is almost 3...is he too young?
mammag replied: They don't start them until they are 5 but it's amazing how quickly they pick it up. There are two five year olds in Cade's class and they grapple against each other and it is sooo cute!
Jiu-Jitsu is a form of self defense that a lot like wrestling. Most of the work is done on the ground and includes submissions (chokes, arm locks, etc.)
Here is an excert from a book description....
"The Brazilian jiu-jitsu style stems from the premise, garnered from analysis of actual street fights, that the outcome of any fight is decided on the ground. While most martial arts deal only with the initial punching and kicking stages of combat, Brazilian jiu-jitsu concentrates on ground combat."
It got popular when The Ultimate Fighting Championship started because the Jiu Jitsu guys (Royce Gracie in particular) were winning all the time. Cade goes to the Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy (Royce's older brother) in Columbus. My sister just put her son in it as well and he is really enjoying it as well.
I highly recommend it for anyone considering a martial art for their child.
DVFlyer replied: That's one of the reasons I liked (emphasis on "ed") UFC. It was "real". This is what street fighting would typically be like. And you're right, fights are almost always settled on the ground; which is where Jiu Jitsu excels. Of course, it's better to not get into the fight in the first place
I took Karate (Tang Soo Do) when I was around 8 and really liked it. [brag mode] I was 6 mos away from getting my black belt at 8 years old. [/brag mode] The thing to keep in mind, and I'm sure most schools teach, is that you learn martial arts as a means of "defense". It should never be used as offense. Of course, I didn't care to listen to that when I was young, but luckily, didn't have the attitude or confidence to get into fights.
All forms of martial arts have their place, so pick one your child likes and see how far they go. Worst case is they get away from the TV, meet some people and get some exercise.
My2Beauties replied: I took Judo which is a pretty mcuh the same as Jiu-Jitsu except I don't believe we had choke holds, it was all done on the ground and you learned how to flip people over you, say if you're being attacked from behind you can flip someone over your shoulder nomatter how they grab you and get them on the ground quick! I flipped a man that weighed about 300 pounds when I was only 12 years old, it doesn't require much strength, it's the way you do it! I wouold suggest children have some form of sef defense course such as Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, Karate, Tae-Kwon-Do etc....They are wonderful!
MommyToAshley replied: WTG Cade on winning the match!!
