Please state your opinion - debate about Birth control

MyBabeMaddie wrote: Not that I will be needing it the way my relationship is going...

Besides abstinence.... What is THE BEST birth control? The pill has proven ineffective for me 2 times... My Dr. suggested the ring and an IUD, but I've heard you can have some heavy bleeding wth IUD, my mom said to go on Depo but I heard you can get really moody...

What do you use?

Danalana replied: I wish I could help, but I only took it for a couple of months in college...for cramps. I didn't have sex until we got married, and we have been trying to get pregnant. I really have no idea what's good. basically, I'm sorry for this useless post blush.gif

Miranda1127 replied: fat. i had a little work getting ds, once i lost 40lb i got preg. so what worked for me was fat. i can't (won't ) do med bc (thats what got me fat in the first place so they scare me). but anyway what we do now - dh pulls out (risky but so far so good) also we got him schedueled for a v-sec consultation

mckayleesmom replied: I made my dh get snipped.... biggrin.gif

mckayleesmom replied: Now for the explanation.

I would never get the DEPO because once its in your body...its in....No matter what reaction your body has to it.

IUD....I would never get because I had a friend who got it and ended up having to have it surgically removed after it tore through her uterus.

Birth Control.....I will never go on it again. I went on the mini pill after McKaylee and had always had passing PAPS up until then. After I went off it I had a PAP and I had cancer cells on my uterus and had to go through procedures to get them off....Im still having to go through those procedures. It might have just been a coincidence....but I still think it had something to do with the hormones in the pills. The pills also made me feel like I wanted to pick a fight with someone... laugh.gif

The Pull and Pray method...........Russell is the pull and pray method.... rolling_smile.gif

So I say....condoms.......Im sure you probably don't want him to get snipped because you are so young and probably want more when the time is right.

PrairieMom replied: I have heard that people have a hard time gettng PG after being on Depo, but I don't have actualy statistics to back that up. IUD's just aren't for me. I was using the pill, but if that doesn't work for you then I would say condom.

Crystalina replied:
An aquaintence of mine is going through this right now. sad.gif

Nina J replied: The pill and condoms. Both of them at the same time, because they're both not 100% effective. And also, I've been on cheaper pills and more expensive ones, and with the cheaper ones I got the fluid retention, weight gain and everything, but with the more expensive ones, I didn't have any issues. But I guess everyone is different.

lovemy2 replied: I would have to say the pill AND condoms and also be very careful WHEN during the month you are doing the deed - we all know there is a small window of time when you can get pregnant...try charting your temps to get a handle on when you ovulate and then avoid doing the deed around that time hug.gif

ZandersMama replied: I have had problems with every kind of BC, bleeding through, heavy periods , weight gain. I started using the ring about 3 months ago and I love it. No breakthrough at all, and my periods are lighter. I use to bleed 3 out of 4 weeks, and now I bleed maybe 4 days at the longest. The day I insert it I am a little crampy but other then that I am great. I would reccomend it to anyone. Once you get past the initial awkwardness of sticking something up there blush.gif it is great.

kimberley replied: i am just using condoms at the moment, but i was using the depo shot after my first daughter. i didn't experience all the side effects people complain about. my OBGYN explained that the dosage needs to be adjusted to the individual. some need more, some need less. i never had the break through bleeding, so my dosage was fine. it is great because you don't have to remember a stupid pill every day, it is cheap and lasts 3mos at a time. and the myth of not getting pg once you have taken it is false or Kaleigh would not exist. good luck with your decision.

my2monkeyboys replied: Since about 6 months after we were married we have done the withdrawal method. DH didn't pull out on 3 different times, and the 3rd one is when we got Will. : )
However, if we do get pregnant again it wouldn't be a bad surprise, so it works for us. However, if you REALLY don't want/need to get pregnant then I suggest a combination. Maybe condoms and withdrawal, or pills and condoms... something like that. That should cover all the bases.
HTH!

MyBabeMaddie replied: I just hate condoms, I'm not allergic to latex but it makes me all funky down there (sorry tmi) like they are so gooey and itchy.

The depo just sounds appealing because you dont have to remember to do anything just go get the shot every 3 months. It doesn't have any weird affects on my mom so that makes me think it would be okay for me.

I don't know, can I just have my virginity back please? lol, abstinence seems to be my #1 choice but you never know what can happen... urgggg

Jackie012007 replied: I'm on BCP and we use condoms... and yeah, that is how we got Carly, our miracle baby, but if it happens again, it happens. I started the pill after I m/c and I've had some I think breakthrough bleeding, but I dunno if it is that or more m/c. I'm on Ortho Low - I was on Yaz when I got pregnant.

FWIW, My GP won't give out the depo shot at all because the frequency of fertility problems she has seen associated to it in her patients - she has been a Dr in my area for 28 years (my doc my whole life). Just do research before you make a solid decision.

~Roo'sMama~ replied: All we have ever used are condoms. I don't especially like them either, but they work and I refuse to use the pill or any kind of hormone birth control. They are very effective if you use them right - the only times I have gotten pg in the four years that we've been married was when we were not using a condom. A year ago we switched to the new condoms by trojan - they're called Elexa or something - and you can hardly even tell it's there. I'd still rather use nothing at all but they're ok. thumb.gif

HuskerMom replied:
That's how it was for me. I was on the Depo shot for 3 years and then it took 5 years to get pg after I quit getting the shot. It really messed up my hormones too, killed my sex drive too (sorry if it's too much info). The ONLY good thing for me about the shot was that I had no AF. But I would definetly not recommend it.

luvmykids replied:
Same here, I had heard so much about the after affects of it that I was taking my time when I was due for a shot and guess what....got pg with the twins. I was only about three weeks late making the appointment when I found out I was pg. I was shocked because I'd heard so much about it taking six months or longer to get out of your system blahblah.gif

MoonMama replied: Well the only thing I ave ever done is BC pills. Before we got married blush.gif for about 5 months and now, but DH has been my only partner so I don't have to much to go on here. Good luck hun I hope you find something thats right for you. hug.gif

CantWait replied: I've been on pills, and their fine except the fact that you have to remember them everyday.

I've also been on DEPO (99.8% effective) however I gained a TON of weight. It was convient though, and I didn't have my period the whole time I was on it.

Our Lil' Family replied: I was on the Ortho Tri-Cyclen pill for 8 years before we decided to get pregnant with Thomas. I've been back on it for 2 years now and I love it! I don't have a problem remembering to take it though....it's ingrained in me and it was weird for me not to take it when I was pregnant!

lisar replied: I used the depo when I was on BC. My friend actually got pregnant while on the depo though. It never affected me in any bad way what-so-ever. I didnt gain weight and when I came off of it I got pregnant with Raygen within 2 months. I think you should just do what you think is right for you.

DansMom replied: The diaphragm with spermicide, used properly and consistently, is effective and has the added benefit of no hormonal side effects.

moped replied: I don't really have an opinion but I don't like depo, was on the pill but not in the last 5 years........we used the calendar method!

Kaitlin'smom replied: well the one time I tired BC pills, I not only gained weight but it did not help regulate me at all. My sister used to do depo and never had any problems getting PG after she stoped, she had no side effects that I am aware of.

Personaly I woudl list all the options, pro and cons of each and then do what you will be comfortable with.

hopefulmomtobe replied: I used to use Yasmin and love it! I had lighter periods and no cramps whatso ever! It was very easy on my system and had no side effects for me (I am sensitive to meds too) This also has a water pill in them so that you dont get bloated or gain weight.

I am not a big fan of putting something in my body that I would have to go to the doctor to get taken out if it makes me feel bad.

Hope you find something that works well for you!!

Calimama replied: Nothing. I refuse to take birth control but we're too young to have something permanent done. We use condoms and go by the calender. Although right now DH is gone so I don't have to worry about it. tongue.gif

MomToThreeAngels replied:

i used it for two years and turned into a total queen Bich and i gained alot of weight. emotional and i thought i was going crazy on it and i did not have a period with it and it took me a long time to get pregnant after i stopped and i ended up miscarrying. I would not suggest the depo. My DH told me that if i ever go on it again that he would leave me but i dont have to worry about that now because i got a total hysterectomy. biggrin.gif

maestra replied: I have the mirena IUD and love it. This is my second one. 6 weeks after I had the first one taken out, I was pg with my second dd.

Good luck with your choice!

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I am currently on the mini-pill called Nora-be becaue I am BF. So far I haven't experienced any side effects...I could call myself moody, but I think that I'm moody regardless! LOL! So I actually like this one. I've been on regular BC before and found that I gained weight and had heavy bleeding, but the positive side was that my acne cleared up, I had larger breasts and I NEVER got pregnant while taking it. Oh and we use condoms too because the thing about the mini-pill is that you have to take it at the EXACT same time everyday for it to work. dry.gif

Brias3 replied: I'm newly on the ring (for about four months or so) and I love it so far. No problems at all. In fact, it really has made periods shorter and lighter too. At first, I was leery of it slipping out, etc. but haven't had problems. OCCASIONALLY, I prefer to take it out during intercourse (sorry, TMI) but it's only once and again that it bothers me at all.

That might be a great option for you. I especially like it because its thoughtless too- in for three weeks, out for one. Using those marking stickers that come in the package in my planner is all I need to keep me right on track with it.

redchief replied: We used the rhythm method and condoms. This worked for us but Lisa hated condoms. After we knew we were finished having kids I got a vasectomy. It wasn't horrible.

BabyOwen427 replied: Before I had DS I used the Ring and I loved it! Lighter peroids and I didn't have to remember a pill. The only time it accidently came out was when we were being rough, it slipped over his head and got hooked! It came out and was just 'hanging' there laugh.gif Sorry if TMI, we still laugh about it though tongue.gif If I wanted to go back on any bc it would defantly be the ring but right now we are hoping we get pg again so we're not doing anything to stop it wub.gif My current form of bc is breastfeeding, and for me it works very well.

grapfruit replied: I used Depo a few years ago, and HATED IT!!!!! In fact, it caused SEVERE depression and crazy bleeding.

I'm on the ring now and LOVE it. smile.gif bummer part is I'm losing my insurance next month, so I don't know WHAT I'm going to do sad.gif ...I joked w/my bf last night and told him that we should get married so I can have insurance. He said, "well figure it out" blink.gif normally he's a very firm "no".

Cece00 replied: Well, I've gotten pregnant twice on the pill- 2 different pills. And I have one pull & pray baby, and one baby we tried for. So I dont think the pill or pull & pray are good methods. rolling_smile.gif Now I have a tubal, and so far, so good, going on 8 months now. thumb.gif

stella6979 replied:
Same here.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
My sister in law swears by the IUD...the hormone releasing one. I personally do not believe in using the ones without the hormones, as they abort the pregnancy instead of preventing it (I'm not an abortion supporter and feel it's on the same level, IMO). I have used the patch in the past and had success with it, except that now there are many studies about how it increases chances for blood clots so I wont go there anymore. Hubby will be getting "snipped" in the near future so hopefully I wont have to go down this road again myself. I hate BC because it messes with your body so much. I'd rather not take anything personally.
