Pray Scotty makes it home SOON!

Maddie&EthansMom wrote: He is only a few miles from the house, but is stuck in traffic due to the ice/sleet/snow etc. tongue.gif It has taken him over an hour to get to this point, too. blink.gif I'm glad people are taking their time driving, but I really want him home. sad.gif

He should be here in a little while. Right now he is just sitting still, though. I don't know how you people up north cope with this crud. sleep.gif It will all be gone here by tomorrow afternoon and I like it as long as I can sit in my home with my family and a warm fire blazing, but this traffic situation is for the birds. dry.gif

So, how DO ya'll do it? Do you leave super early? Are the roads really bad? Do you just get used to it and drive in it anyway? What time do you have to be at work? How long does it take to get there and back home?

Sorry so many questions...I'm just not used to it. I got stuck in this mess with my mother one year. We went to her cancer doc in Dallas and it started sleeting while we were there and froze over. It took us 4 hours to get back to my house (usually a 30-45 min drive) blink.gif I refuse to go out now when the weather does this.

DansMom replied: I hope he'll be walking in the door soon! I hate worrying about DH, who does a lot of driving.

Well, I grew up in Maine and now live in Michigan, so I'm used to it. But it is more of a hassle and more scary with kids in the car. And just the time it takes to put a fully bundled kid into a car seat!! wacko.gif drives me batty sometimes.

MommyToAshley replied: Oh no... hope he makes it home soon. hug.gif But, it's good that everyone is being safe.

As for how we do it... I personally avoid it. laugh.gif I think people up here are used to it and at the first hint of a snowstorm, the salt trucks start followed by the snow plows. The schools usually close if they think it is going to be bad enough. happy.gif

Just don't go shopping the day before a storm, you'd think people are assuming they are going to be snowed in for months by the way they flock to the stores.

Last year, they didn't plow our road the first day (I forget the reason... I think they ran out of salt or something?) Anyways, we had to go out and there were cars getting stuck on our street ... DH had to help push them out. But, the main roads were fine. That's the only time we've had a problem. It does take a bit longer to get anywhere, but like I said, I just avoid it.

The good part about all the snow, it does make it easier for Santa to land his sleigh. wink.gif

amymom replied: I am praying for Scotty to arrive home safely and soon.

MommyToAshley replied:
This is the part that drives me nuts.... first all the time it takes to bundle them up and then it's awkward getting them in and out of the car. Not to mention that when the weather is crazy... warm one day and freezing the next.... you have to keep adjusting the carseat to fit the different size jackets. I tell you, I'm ready for spring by the end of winter, that's for sure!

mummy2girls replied:
Being that I live in Alberta we have snow from October till april and yes it even snows in april. so im used to it...LOL

I have to be at work by 745am so i leave the house at least 45 minutes early so i can get there on time. and in the summer this drive would only take me 15 minutes...LOL. Sometimes the roads can get brutal. I find the very first snowfall is the worst! and on the way home because its quitiing timne for i swear every body it takes over an hour... YUCK!

USMCwife replied: I dont mind driving in it except for going down hills, I hate it! Going up isnt a problem if you have a four wheel drive, which I do. And there is a big hill right before you get to where I live.

jacobsmama replied: I hate driving in snow too!! I work 45 minutes from my house so I dread the day it snows/sleets and I have to work!!!

I hope scotty gets home soon!!!! wub.gif

moped replied: Well what Shelly said except that we don't get as much of that sleet/freezing rain, we get full on snow so it freezes like sheets of ice, but the more it is driven on the easier it is - LOL..........................I guess. Yeah I am about 20 minutes in the summer and 45 in this stuff....right now it is just cold and there is snow but the roads are clear so driving isn't a big deal...............we don't drive on sheer ice 24/7.......I coudln't handle that

My2Beauties replied: We only usually get 1-2 "big" snows a year, our first is coming today! Our salt trucks come out a day or two prior to a snowfall and put out Brine or whatever it is called which is a salt and water mix that stops the roads from freezing and then the day of the snow, when the first snowflake is seen, the salt trucks are out. Our side streets are usually treacherous though, I always miss a day of work if I wake up to snow because we live on a dead end street that is semi up-hill so I can never get out nor do I even want to attempt to try and get out.

Kaitlin'smom replied: hope he got home safe and sound. as for me I just deal with it and drive extra careful even if it means longer drive time. I have to be at work by 9a and drop Kait off so we leave by 8a if the roads are bad it gives me that extra 1/2 hour. They have put that chemical on the roads that are supposed ot help already and we are due for snow this afternoon/evening. Let see how much we do get. wink.gif

jcc64 replied: 4 wheel drive- the only way to get anywhere where I live. The first year I lived in this area, we had to park our car at the bottom of the mountain and walk up!!!! Then we got smart, traded in our cute little black sports car, and got a Subaru. Now, 18 yrs later, I will not consider buying a car w/o 4WD. Limits the choices, but I will not drive around with kids in my car w/o it.
I also think they're much better at clearing the roads up here than down South. There's more equipment, more money budgeted for snow removal, and people are just better at driving on the snow b/c we simply can't hunker down every time it snows- we'd never leave the house! rolling_smile.gif
Hope he got home ok, and you had a brandy, a fire, and a big smile on your face waiting for him.

~Roo'sMama~ replied: I hope he made it home ok!! hug.gif

Scott always has to leave early for work when the roads are bad. I hate it because it takes him an hour to get there as it is. dry.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: He got home just fine. wub.gif It took him twice as long, but that seems to be the trend from what you all are saying. wink.gif He left this morning and said the streets were pretty much all sanded. The city really tried to stay on top of that and they did a great job IMO. Dallas and Ft Worth had it REALLY bad and they still seemed to keep the roads clear. (the best they could anyway)

Maddie is going in late this morning...I hope the roads on the way to school are okay by now. I don't do so well on the ice. unsure.gif

Thanks y'all! hug.gif

MommyToAshley replied: Glad he made it home safely.

Hope the roads are clear this morning for you and Maddie... stay safe. hug.gif

A&A'smommy replied: I'm glad he made it home okay I would have been freaking out!!! hug.gif hug.gif

TANNER'S MOM replied: Oh let me tell you.. I have been in Dallas in an ice storm years ago..and they couldn't understand it was time to slow down. Not drive 100 on the interstate.

I didn't go to work today. I stayed at home..I needed the money but oh well.

We get ice and thats what sux. Snow is no biggie it's the ice that I hate. I can get down the hill but not sure about back up. We get iced in.. only a few times a year. It is suppose to be around 8 degrees tonight...but I hope not! We have 4x4 and chains. Drive slow and pay attention is the key. Brakes are not good. Don't hit them hard.. act like you are driving with them. If you are going to fast and have to use them ..time to slow down~
