Putting the kids to work

PrairieMom wrote: Every one is chipping in this thanksgiving. Ben and Al are making the butter for dinner by shaking cream in a jar, and then they are making ice cream with our ice cream ball. Around here, if you want to eat, you work for it. rolling_smile.gif I hope it makes fond memories for them. wub.gif I love family traditions.

luvmykids replied: I think thats so great, I'm a sucker for tradition and sentiment wub.gif

My dad and I were just talking yesterday about kids working for their food laugh.gif He was from a strict Irish Italian family with 13 kids....either you helped Dad outside, or helped Mom with dinner, or everyone else got to eat before you...which meant it was slim pickins rolling_smile.gif

lisar replied: I think its a great idea. When I was young Granny would always have me help her with cleaning out of the stuff out of the turkey. I am gona start that with Lexi. Next year though cause I am not in charge of the meat this year

CantWait replied: I remember always whipping the potatoes for Thanksgiving and Christmas, I don't really like that job, but little kids don't know the difference, when they're older they'll have fond memories of doing it. wub.gif

OUCH - Irish Italian - what a combo - I am sure more than just getting to eat was a project in that house laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

stella6979 replied: I think it's a great idea as well. Avery helps me make dinner just about every night and she loves it. thumb.gif

moped replied: You really make butter????????? IMPRESSIVE

lisar replied:
I know right. I dont have time for that.

PrairieMom replied:
thats why the boy is doing it. rolling_smile.gif He thinks he is so cool.
Its not that hard. You get a glass jar with a lid, poor in some heavy cream and a pinch of salt, toss in a glasss marble to help things out a bit, its not necessary, but it helps speed up the process, and shake it like crazy for 1/2 hour or so. last year they ended up rolling it around the living room floor and kicking it down the stairs (onto carpet) rolling_smile.gif It separates into butter milk that you drain off and a lump of butter.

moped replied: WOW!!!!!!!

How long is good for?
And do you have a recipe? (exact instructions I am no good without them) LOL
Can I make cinnamon butter with it also?

Calimama replied: That's cool!!!
