Rae made me think.... - at what age

Mya still can't . She can float ok but if you were to plop with her in the deep end it's like giving a cat a bath ( which I do every 2 weeks..LOL) she scrambles and scratches until she gets to land..
MyLuvBugs replied: Good Question. I dont' think I learned to swim until I was 5 or 6. But I'd like Lorelei to learn a little earlier, cause ya never know.
kit_kats_mom replied: K started swim lessons right before her third birthday. We will probably do the same with Lauren. It's a necessity here since most everyone has pools in their back yards. We don't but she could go to a friends house and fall in. Accidental drownings are way too common round these parts.
My3LilMonkeys replied: I could swim when I was 3. I want to start getting Brooke into lessons but we don't have the $ yet - hopefully this summer.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, my 8 yr old nephew can't swim yet.
coasterqueen replied: Kylie started swim lessons at 6 months and was taking them all the way through my pg with Megan. We've sort of fell behind in them since. I wanted to start Megan at 6 months too but we had a problem where even when she would take a bath and get out her whole face turned blue and so did her hands and feet. It was freaky. Now she's grown out of whatever that freaky thing was and we are thinking of starting them soon.
Don't know what age exactly they learn to swim, though.
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Maddie has no interest. She just now started sticking her head under water.
MamaJAM replied: None of my kids can really 'swim'. DD#1 can doggy paddle - sort of...but not 'swim'. DD#2 is scared to death of water...obviously, she can't (and won't) swim. DD#3 wants to learn if we get to the beach this summer (we have no where to swim while at home). DS#1 can hardly handle getting his hair washed - let alone getting in a pool. And DS#2 is only 2.5 - though last summer he did enjoy being in the pool at the beach.
Kind of odd group of kids for a mother who was on swim-teams starting at age 4 and was a life-guard and swim teacher as a teen.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: My niece learned around 6. I remember being maybe 7 or 8. But there is a little guy in Wil's class, maybe a little over two, and he was totally dog paddling around us yesterday! Blew my mind. I asked the mother how he learned and she said it was just from floating on a noodle while his older sisters took their class. He was jumping in and floating on his back!!!
mom21kid2dogs replied: Although the Red Cross in our town still says she too young for lessons, she could swim 3 strokes, go off the diving board, swim with width of the pool underwater and float on her back before she was 4. She was born with gills and I am a former lifeguard so she gets it honest. We swim almost every day summer & winter.
A&A'smommy replied: Well we will see if Alyssa will try to swim or not this year my mom has and underground pool and I plan on spending LOTS of time over there especially since I wont have anything else to do
zdk753 replied: None of my kids can swim & their 7, 6, & 3. I need to take them for lessons, but right now I can't afford it.
luvmykids replied: I'm wanting to start lessons for the twins this summer, but I'm not sure they'll go for it. They want floaties or forget it.
redchief replied: Kaitlin was our eldest nonswimmer. She finally learned last year. The boys and Erin all learned to swim over several summers and were fairly proficient by the time they were 10.
CosmetologyMommy replied: I swam at 6, but I also almost drowned as a kid!
