Rice help...or an alternative.

Crystalina wrote: I've been living (really!) on Talapia and white rice. It's pretty bland so I add seasoning. I thought the white rice was ok but now I've just recently been told that the white rice is not as healthy and is more fattening then brown rice? Is that true? Does anyone know? And is there an alternative with my tasteless fish then rice?

Hillbilly Housewife replied: Um..can I ask why? lol

Try adding a little bit of italian dressing to your rice. Or chicken soup mix. Um, dried vegetable seasonings is good too.

Brown rice is slightly healthier, yes, only because it hasn't had the bran husk removed like white rice has, and white rice has more strach due to processing. Rice is rice... they're both the seeds of water grasses.

Erg I keep editing the wrong part of text. lol

There we go.

A&A'smommy replied: yeah white rice is fattening.. but if you aren't over doing it then you will be fine!

What kind of alternitive are you looking for something that will make you feel full or just something to go with your fish?

lisar replied: Thats a good question. I didnt know that, so I will be learning something with the post

Crystalina replied:
Why? Yeah, I guess I should have said something about that. emlaugh.gif It's because I'm a heffalump and I'm trying to lose weight. I'm going to the gym and working out an hour a day and I eat that. I eat other things like Special K for breakfast and maybe a yogurt or fruit for a snack but since dh and the kids refuse to change anything right now (dh is to blame for that. mad.gif ) then it's just easier for me to eat that. It really doesn't bother me but I would like to find something that would go with the fish. Maybe some steamed veggies! Never thought of that. smile.gif

Crystalina replied:
Yes, basically something to feel full. I thought rice did that without alot of fattening stuff. No wonder the weight is slow to come off. wacko.gif

Hillbilly Housewife replied: lol heffalump... no way dude. You're gorgeous. thumb.gif

yeah veggies would probably be the better thing to do. lol

Cut down on butter...use pam to cook instead.
No more than 2 fruit a day... they contain fructose... which mixed with starches can actually counter balance your weight-losing. Go figure.
Carrots, peas, corn, potatoes are some veggies you should stay away from if you're trying to cut your sugar and starches.

In essence... cut out anything that's white. (other than fish) Whole wheat and whole grain foods are great.. but really all they mean is that the bran husks are not removed from the product, whereas their non-whole wheat or non-whole grain counterparts have had the bran removed and have been bleached or starched. So ythey're better than the white version... but still not as great as veggies.

Just make sure you eat 3 servings of protein a day. Protein is what keeps your muscles strong...and your heart is a muscle. You don't want to compromise on the protein, at all.

Here's a few examples of one serving of protein:

6 egg whites
half a normal sized chicken breast, skin and fat removed
a steak no bigger than your palm
3 slices of Kraft fat-free processed cheese
1 fish filet
about 12 or 13 stir-fry sized shrimp

PrairieMom replied: I love brown rice now. I have found that white rice has no flavor, but the brown rice is kind of nutty.

Crystalina replied: Thanks Rocky!

I've been doing chicken breast also but it tastes so yuck after eating nothing but the fish.

I'll start the veggies. I've been taking alli also so that has helped a bit with the weight.

kimberley replied: brown rice, whole wheat pasta, salads, veggies, legumes

when i lost a lot of weight for a trip to cuba, i lived off those paper thin steaks (lean) and steamed broccoli with ginger. drank lotsa water too while eating. it gives you that full feeling faster.

Crystalina replied:
I do the water. I also drink protein water. LOVE IT! Some of them taste like smoothies. I drink the Special K drinks.

What the heck are legumes? Never heard of them. huh.gif

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
lol

legumes are beans. Lima beans, lentils, black beans, kidney beans.. etc

kimberley replied: lol i thought that was the international name for them blush.gif

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
unsure.gif

moped replied: White rice is as bad as eating white bread - both of which I eat and love!

Cece00 replied: Did you think about trying weight watchers? They teach you how to eat normal foods & still lose weight. I'm doing it now, I've lost about 13 lbs in 3 months or so, and I'm lazy about it, or I wouldve lost a lot more rolling_smile.gif But that is whats great...I can still eat junky stuff & have lost weight.

White rice can be bad for you in high quantities.

Also, the weight is probably slow to come off b/c if you go from a "regular" diet to suddenly basically eating nothing, your body will store everything you eat, thinking you are in a starvation situation.

There is SO MUCH good food you can eat & lose plenty of weight...you dont have to survive on fish & rice.
