Scary thing happened last night...

MommyToAshley wrote: Around 3 a.m., Ashley cried out of her bedroom that she needed a tissue. I told her just a minute that I was coming, but then when she walks out of her room she starts crying and saying, "help!" When DH looks, her shirt is covered in blood, and it's all over her face. At closer inspection, her nose is bleeding... pretty hard. Good thing DH was there, because I really freak out at blood. It took us a bit to get it to stop. I was ready to take her to the E.R. I am still not sure what caused it. She said she thought it was "boogies" coming out of her nose and didn't realize it was blood until she walked into the hall in the light.

She has seasonal allergies and has had a mild nose bleed when blowing her nose that has stopped within seconds, but nothing like this. It was bleeding really hard, she even left a trail of blood where she walked. Her shirt and arms were covered and hair had blood in it. She says she didn't bump it on anything or even blow her nose, she just woke up to "boogies" running out of her nose.

We gave her something to eat and drink and then had her stay up for an hour or so to keep an eye on her. I let her sleep in our room, but I didn't get any sleep.

My3LilMonkeys replied: hug.gif How scary!! My sister used to get nosebleeds when we were kids for no reason at all - hopefully that's what it is.

kit_kats_mom replied: my cousins were prone to nighttime nosebleeds.

Twelve Volt Man replied: I bet that was scary. I can't imagine how terrifying it would be to wake up in the middle of the night and see your child covered in blood! I'm glad she's okay.

sparkys2boys replied:
Exactly.. very scary. Is the air dry also?? Cameron tends to get noseblleds in the winter often and we out a pan of water in his room and it seems to help. Hope she is ok. hug.gif

gr33n3y3z replied: If I remember right Dee Dee around this time last year this happend to her also or am I thinking of another board members child?

I'm glad she is ok
I would mention this to the Dr next time she goes

kimberley replied: Jade gets nosebleeds like that all the time. ped thinks she may have picked her nose in her sleep and doesn't seem very concerned about it. rolleyes.gif
Jade also has allergies and needs a humidifier all the time.

poor you and Ashley. that must have been scary. hug.gif hug.gif

HuskerMom replied: Glad she's ok! hug.gif

amynicole21 replied: Oh wow... I would have freaked out! Poor kiddo sleep.gif

msoulz replied:

Same with my Jake - it's usually because he is mining. blink.gif

He does have allergies too so I figure his nose is probably itchy or chocked full o' uglies. He wakes up once every month or so with a bleeder. A quick inspection of the fingers will reveal if he's been digging.

The good thing is when they get older they can pretty much take care of it themselves and it isn't so scary. I hear Jake when he gets up now and help him but he usually has it under control. smile.gif

cameragirl21 replied: glad she's ok. sometimes when you have dry air in the house it can lead to nosebleeds, especially if you started running the AC all of a sudden for the first time in the season and any humidity from leaving the windows open is suddenly gone. she may be very sensitive to sudden temperature and/or humidity changes in the air.

Cece00 replied: I used to have that happen a lot as a kid, and my 2nd son also has it. Its mostly due to dry air, allergies, nosepicking, or a combo of these.

jem0622 replied: HUGS! Sorry for the scare. This happened to me often as a child. I had a sinus irrigation, tonsil, and adenoid removal at age 4. This helped me out a lot!

MommyToAshley replied:
Yes, she has had nosebleeds before. And, you are probably right, it may have been around this time last year. But, she has never had one this bad. As I said, her shirt was soaked and it was all over her arms and hair, and it was still coming out of her nose. It really freaked me out at first because I didn't know what was bleeding.

I did check her fingers and there was no blood on her fingers. Just the top of her hand, like she had wiped her hand across her nose. It was just a nose bleed, but last night it was pretty scary.

punkeemunkee'smom replied: Dee Dee First of all hug.gif hug.gif hug.gif hug.gif hug.gif I can't imagine how scary that would be in the night! ohmy.gif My little sister gets nosebleeds like that-BAD and scary ones. Her pedi suggested to my mom that she take a q-tip with a small amount of neosporin on it and sort of coat the inside of my sisters nose. He said that would keep the inside of her nose moist and help heal the small capalaries that seem to break when allergies or dry air is the culprit. The only downside is it smells kinda odd, but once explained to my sister the trade off to her was worth it. We will keep her in our prayers hug.gif

luvmykids replied: How scary for all of you! hug.gif Glad you were able to get it stopped without a trip to the ER!

Nina J replied: hug.gif I'm glad she is okay, I would have been terrified

jcc64 replied: What a way to wake up, Dee Dee! As others have said, nosebloods look much worse than they are- and some people just seem to be prone to them- my grandmother was like that and it was freaky, b/c it seemed like so much blood to lose. Does she have an allergist, and/or does she use any nasal sprays like Nasacort?

Jamison'smama replied: Yikes!! How scary. How did Ashley do? Was she handling it okay or did all the blood really scare her?

Kaitlin'smom replied: hug.gif yikes how scary.

MommyToAshley replied: Thanks everyone. hug.gif She was fine all day yesterday. hug.gif

It scared her when she first saw it and was crying out for help. I am glad DH was there because he was the calming factor. I started to freak out but then tried to remain calm for her. She calmed down, which I htink helped to stop the bleeding. But then she said she was afraid to go to sleep because it might happen again. sad.gif

Calimama replied: Scary!! Glad it's nothing serious. hug.gif

3xsthefun replied: That would have freaked me out too! Glad she is ok! hug.gif

MomToThreeAngels replied: My son has nose bleeds like that. It is very scary. You might wanna try putting vasiline on a q tip and putting the vasiline inside each nostril and get a humidifier (SP) also helps to.
