Seatbelts

Danalana wrote: I saw somebody mention seatbelts in another thread, and it got me thinking...do you automatically put yours on when you get in your automobile?
I gotta be honest and say that i usually don't. I promise I'm not rebelling against the law, and I usually DO remember to put it on at some point, but I just don't think of it for a while. In my defense, I NEVER had one on as a kid. I remember my mother letting me stand up in the car...even walk around if I wanted to. Soooo, I just wasn't raised so that my seatbelt is second nature. My husband is the same way. when I finally do remember mine, I make him put his on. When we have kids, they WILL wear theirs, but I can't expect them to do it if we don't lead by example.
Anyway, just wondering if everybody else puts theirs on...

cameragirl21 replied: i usually wear mine, although if i'm going a very short distance, lately i've been remiss.
i was rear ended while stopped at a red light at 55 miles per hour some years back and if i hadn't worn my seat belt then i'd have broken the windshield with my face so i'm somewhat more inclined to wear mine after that.

booey2 replied: Yep the minute I get in the car is goes on and any riders I have -have to put it on before I move. I feel kinda naked if I don't put it on.

lisar replied: It depends. My new truck beeps untill I put it on.

sparkys2boys replied: Always.. its second nature to me get in and put it on right then.

luvbug00 replied: Mya wears hers all the time. I on the other hand do not until i remember. But lars gets REALLY mad when i don't.

Kaitlin'smom replied: always, DH only when Kaitlin tell him to.

mummy2girls replied: yes I remember to always:)

PrairieMom replied: always always always, and everyone that rides with me does too, including my father, who won't until I refuse to move until he puts it on. In my line of work I see WAY to many yucky things, so I tend to be cautious in everything I do.
Wearing seat belts is so simple, and can save your life!

stella6979 replied:
Same here.

skinkybaby replied: Thats the very first thing I do when I get in the car. My parents drilled it into our heads growing up. If we were caught without our seat belt on or unbuckled before we were supposed to we had to sit in the car for 5 minutes when we got home.

Hillbilly Housewife replied: Absolutely. The car doesn't move if the seatbelts aren't on.

it "doesn't work" wink.gif laugh.gif

hoosier momma replied: We always wear are seatbelts. There is no option in my vehicle.

mom21kid2dogs replied: Although my early life pretty much predates seat belts, I have always worn one since I was old enough to drive. I ain't too pretty now so I'd hate to see what I'd look like after going through the windshield! rolleyes.gif

gr33n3y3z replied: always

Calimama replied: I do, both DH and I do it automatically. wink.gif

3xsthefun replied: I always remember to put my seatbelt on.

msoulz replied:
I had a similar experience shortly after it became law to wear one. Before that I did not. That would have been really ugly had I not been wearing a belt, and now it is the first thing I do before starting the vehicle.

BabyOwen427 replied: I have always for as long as I can remember and now I am more adament about my passangers also wearing theirs since my DH was in a wreck and his seatbelt literally saved his life. He flipped his classic mustang and if he hadn't been wearing his belt he would have been thrown from it or seriously hurt. As it was he had whiplash and a bruise wacko.gif Now noone misses it in any car I ride in, or I get hysterical tongue.gif

kit_kats_mom replied: Totally automatic here. It's so ingrained in my physical habits that I've been known, in my sleep deprived moments, to reach for a seatbelt when I sit on the toilet or in a chair. It cracks my DH up because he just sees me sit down, reach around with my left hand and then look puzzled when there's not a seatbelt to grab. blush.gif

Miranda1127 replied: you know what i don't understand, Pa has a seatbelt law but doesn't have a helmet law. seems kinda redic. kwim. there are bikers (motor) who ride helmet free, but when you get in a car/truck (etc..) you must buckle up for safety. ummm aren't you safer in a car rather than a bike? now no one is required to ware a helmet, from regular bikes to motorcycles. just seems dumb kwim.

anyway my belt isn't second nature but with a 5yr old (who must be buckled) i have a constant reminder to buckele up. if i forget she will remind me. wink.gif

HuskerMom replied: I always wear it when we're on the highway or interstate but usually not driving around town. I should though.

hopefulmomtobe replied:
Our vehicles do that too, My Pilot beeps, but I usually have it on before it starts beeping, but my DH Dodge beeps and he usually leans forward and buckles it behind him (such a rebel) cant wait for him to get a ticket, I bet he will change his mind then! lol

The kids all stick theirs on right away without even thinking about it, they are just used to it, so that is good. Good thing they dont watch their step-dad too closely. lol

Danalana replied: *sigh* I realize now that I drove all the way to work and back, today, and I never put it on. I don't know why it's so hard to remember. Maybe it's because I have a lot of other things in my head that are vying for my attention.

holley79 replied: Since my car accident it is second nature. My mom always wore hers and we were made to wear ours so I can't use that as an excuse. I just hated the stupid thing.

Our Lil' Family replied: Absolutely! It's a habit of mine that DH drilled into me. He was a paramedic for 10 years so you can imagine the scenes he's been called to. I too feel naked without it on. My mom on the other hand doesn't wear hers often, except when riding with me....it's a must!

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: I was raised by a very safety conscious mother. She never turned the key in the ignition until she heard 3 seatbelt clicks from the back seat. We were never allowed to sit up front until we were 11. I use the same rule. I don't start my car until everyone inside is buckled up.

My3LilMonkeys replied:

PA does have a helmet law. The only way that a motorcyclist can ride without a helmet is if the driver & passenger are both 21 or older and the driver has had their license for 2 full years or has completed a safety course. As for bicycles, anyone under 12 must wear a helmet.

I agree that the law is pretty silly though.

Nina J replied: I always put mine on in the car, it is the first thing I do. It's not a hassle to put it on, and it could stop me from smashing through the windsheild if the car crashed. Seatbelts save lives, I'd never not wear one if it were there.

Miranda1127 replied:
may depend on your county/city we don't have one here. the only law reguarding helmets is if you are under 18 and on a motorcycle. but there are none for regular bikes

My3LilMonkeys replied:
Here is where my information on motorcycles came from, and here is the bicycle. Both are linked directly from the PA state homepage.

~Roo'sMama~ replied: I automatically put it on now, but I didn't always. I used to think of it as sort of optional.... those were my young and stupid "nothing would ever happen to me" days. rolleyes.gif And even after I started wearing it every time I drove for a long time I would drive a couple blocks before putting it on because I was too impatient or I'd just forget. But now I put it on before I start driving. happy.gif
