Sexual offender list - what to do?
ammommy wrote: If someone in your neighborhood was a registered sex offender would you let your neighbors know? I'm torn. First of all, he was released less than 2 years ago. Second it was for sexual misconduct with a minor. For those reasons, I think that my neighbors should be aware. However, another part of me says, he's done his time, he's paid his debt. Plus, I don't know what the facts of the crime are. I don't want to start a witch hunt, but I think that people should be aware.
gr33n3y3z replied: thats a tuff one If I didnt know I would like to know But you must make your own mind up.
TANNER'S MOM replied: I would tell..
Most sexual offender do offend again..
And when it comes to our children... they are more important than any ones debt to society paid or not.
I would be careful....not saying anything negative .. Just state the facts and the facts only..
~KARA~ replied: My next door neighbor Is On the sex offender list!!! I just dont know what for! they show a link to click to find out what they are on the list for but it dosent work for me. My girls dont go outside alone anymore and my doors are always locked. My dh even bought alarms that go on our fence gates!
thats what my dh says
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: If he is registered, it is public record and if I was your neighbor I would want to know. Not to discriminate, but I would want to keep an eye on my kids a bit more.
CantWait replied: 1 word.........TELL!
MissyKay2005 replied: I know I would want to know if it were my neighbor! I would let them know. I would try to find out the extent of it first though maybe.
Mom2Boyz replied: This is kind of a sore subject for me since my brother is in prison for a "sex crime" He had CONSENSUAL sexual contact with a girl who was 17 and he was 25. He was sentenced to 20 years, 12 of it on paper, and he has to serve 8 of it in prison. I would say don't tell everyone UNLESS you know what it was for. It could have been something similar to my brothers case, and he is just stuck with that label for the rest of his life. JMHO
ammommy replied: That's what I wonder about. Say he was 19 and girlfried was 17. Parents pressed charges. Guys life is ruined. Does anyone know how to find the facts of the case? Is it possible to do online or do I need to go to the courthouse?
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Good point. Any conviction is public record. Call the courthouse and request a transcript of the trial. The court clerk should be able to help you out.
mckayleesmom replied: You might be able to google his name and find a newspaper article or something also....Do your reserch first...then tell if you think its necessary. One thing that always sticks out in my head when a sex offender murders a young child is the parents saying "We didn't even know he was in the niegborhood, or we would have watched our child better"...That registry is there for a reason...and its there to protect people.....wouldn't you want to know?
Brandon&Jeffreysmom replied: My opinion once a sexual offender. Always a sexual offender. I dont care if he has paid his so called debt. Look how many recent murders and abductions there have been. If you know this person is a sexual offender you have in my opinion a moral obigation to tell.
punkeemunkee'smom replied: WELL SAID!!!
luvbug00 replied: OMG there is a guy charged with forcable sodamy less then 4 miles from my parents house which is right by Mya's school!!! And there's another that " forceable indecent conduct upon a minor" also less then 6 miles from the school!!
Wonderful just wonderful.
CCTandME replied: I thought 17 was the legal age of consent. Or does it vary by state?
TANNER'S MOM replied: In Arkansas.. I don't know about anywhere else..
The sexual offenders have a degree.. like murder..
Offender 1.. is something like you are talking about.. consensaul ...maybe underage
Offender 2.. Is a little worse.. but not bad( as in not the worse.. not that sexual crimes arent bad)
3 and 4 are very serious crimes.. .. and children are advised to never be alone with these people. Here they walk the neighborhood and tell each person he is there and what his crime is..
It might be nice to know what degree... before you tell.
punkeemunkee'smom replied:
It does vary by state,I looked on the net and these are the ages that came upfor male/female consentual relationships.

mammag replied: This happened in my neighborhood a month ago and I printed out the page with his picture and address and gave it to a few of the parents around me. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if something happened to one of the kids here because the parents were unaware. JMO...
MommyToAshley replied: I agree.
MommyToAshley replied: I am sorry that happened to your brother! I just don't understand the criminal justice system. Someone like your brother serves eight years and then someone who does something unmentionable to a child gets off or serves a few months.
I feel bad that your brother will suffer from this stigma for probably the rest of his life, but when it comes to my child, or any child, I would rather error on the side of caution.
ammommy replied: Thanks for the input everyone. I think that I'll tell them to check out the website since so many people have moved into our area. In the meantime, I'm going to call the police station to see if they can point me in the right direction to find out what happened. I'm also going to google the name (something that DH also suggested). I can't just go to the courthouse because I don't know when or where the convcition took place. That's what I'm hoping that police can help with. If I find out what I fear, then I'll definately pass on the information.
