Share A Book!

Crystalina wrote: So I'm on the prowl for new books for the kids and I was wondering what you all would suggest. I have the usual toddler books and all the Dr. Suess books but I'm looking for something else. I think it would be nice if we all share a book that we enjoy reading or found very interesting.

My all time favorite is 'Mr. Peabody's Apple' by Madonna. I love that book so much I bought copies for Izabella's and my nieces and nephew's teachers. I also got a copy for a friend who is just getting into teaching. The moral of the story is great for kids and adults.

I also enjoy all the books by Jamie Lee Curtis. I think she really makes kids feel comfortable about who they are and what they look like.

Kentuckychick replied: Two of my new favorites that I used for my practicum project last semester are;

Hooray for Fish by Lucy Cousins
-- I made all of the fish out of foam paper and paint and put magnets on the backs. Connor plays with them everyday and everyone in the house knows the story by heart "Hello I am a little fish swimming in the sea, I have a lot of fishy friends, come along with me" tongue.gif

I'm the Biggest Thing in the Ocean by Kevin Sherry
-- I made this one using felt and it's another one we play with daily.

I'd Really Like to Eat a Child by S. Donnio and D.D. Monfried
-- This book is HEElarious

There are so many great children's books out there!

bawoodsmall replied: Emily loves Walter the Farting Dog books. Sounds nasty but it does teach you that you shouldnt judge people on their appearances and stuff.

Calimama replied:
thumb.gif I should get that for my nephew. He has a habit of calling people ugly. rolleyes.gif

punkeemunkee'smom replied: We got Taylor a book for Christmas by a company called I SEE ME. It is called My Very Own Fairy Tale...it is personalized and it talks about how the fairies are looking for a new queen, each fairy brings a letter (each fairy is the Fairy of a different fruit or flower) and they all have different wonderful things to say about this little girl they are looking for,who of course turns out to be your little girl wub.gif It is the most beautiful book aand Taylor adores it. They also have one for boys where the animals are the ones who name him wub.gif

We also love Jan Brett (who has an awesome website BTW) and
Malachy Doyle's Tales From Old Ireland is a great book. smile.gif

It's all about a little Crocodile/Alligator (can't remember which at the moment) who's dream it is to "eat a child." The facial expressions on the crocodile crack me up and the ending is really funny. I think it's for bigger kids though because Connor has no real interest but the 7 & 9 year olds I nanny for love it.

Nina J replied: I love the Animalia books by Graeme Base. They don't really have a story line though, but you can talk for ages about the pictures. They're amazing. And, in every picture, there is a little boy that you have to find. You can see him on the cover, but in the book he is well hidden.

Every year in Melbourne, they do the Myer Christmas Windows (Myer is a big department store). This year they based it on Graeme Base's drawings, I was so excited to see it, lol.

Mr. Peabody's Apples takes place in 1949 in Happville, USA. One Saturday, Mr. Peabody, the beloved elementary school teacher and baseball coach, finds himself all alone on the baseball field. He wonders where everybody is until he sees the bat boy, Billy Little, walking toward him with a sad look on his face. Billy tells him that another student, Tommy Tittlebottom, spread a rumor that Mr. Peabody was a thief after Tommy saw Mr. Peabody taking apples twice from the local market.

Mr. Peabody then shows Tommy that what matters is the truth - not how things appear - and teaches him an unforgettable lesson about how we must choose our words carefully to avoid causing harm to others.

Madonna dedicates Mr. Peabody's Apples to teachers everywhere.

I know I already posted about this book but I'm adding the cover for anyone like me. blink.gif happy.gif

mom21kid2dogs replied: We've greatly enjoyed Chicken Soup For the Children's Soul lately. It's a series (we get them from the library) very similar to the adult series. The Braids Girl still makes me cry my eyes out!!! John Groban's Bad Dog, Marley is also cute~O got that for Christmas. We like the Jamie Lee Curtis books, too. Love her illustrator!
We read James and the Giant Peach this summer~she really liked that one, too!

mom21kid2dogs replied: I LOVE Graeme Base! We have several of his books but Olivia has zero interest in them. I think they are incredible!!!
