She needs surgery!
MomToMany wrote: And she has 2 holes in her heart. Kayla will need surgery within a year to fix both of them . He was a good Dr., explaining everything and drawing us pictures of where the holes were. She has both an ASD (Atrial Septal Defect) & VSD (Ventricular Septal Defect). The ASD is a medium-sized one, and the VSD is tiny-small. Both can be fixed at the same time. Also, the Dr.'s will have to watch her heart valve on the right side where the VSD is, so she will get echos (sonogram of the heart) done every 6 months to make sure it's working properly. The Dr. also said it's part of the reason why she's on the small side, since her heart is burning so many calories doing all th at extra pumping.
SOOOOO, now we have to get another echo done in about 6 months to see if the defects get bigger, and then decide when to have the surgery. We will probably wait as long as we can (next summer) for the surgery, but if she needs it sooner, she will get it then.
Thank you so much for the thoughts & prayers! We really appreciate them!
amynicole21 replied: Oh Mollie, how scary I'm sorry that she's going through this, but I'm glad it was caught early.
jcc64 replied: Well, I am certainly sorry that she has to have the surgery. But I'm sure that the drs will do an excellent job, and it's great that she's being monitored so carefully. Almost any cardiac problem is manageable when it's caught early and treated properly. I have a friend whose baby had a similiar problem, and she had the surgery at just 3 months. Her recovery was quick and complete, and a short time later she is a robust and perfectly healthy baby. I'm sure the same will be true for Kayla.
MomToMany replied: Yes, the Dr. said that kids do VERY well with it. She would only be in the hospital for 5 days, where as an adult would be in there for 3 weeks.
I'm sure she will do fine too, but it's scary nonetheless.
mammag replied: I'm so sorry! I know you were hoping it would be later but it's probably for the best. I'm sure she'll do just fine.
coasterqueen replied: Oh Mollie, I am so sorry. How scary for all of you. If you don't mind me asking, how did hey figure out that she had a problem? Did she have symptoms?

MomToMany replied: She didn't have any symptoms; the Dr. heard a murmur at her 15 month checkup that he's never heard before. But it's been there since birth, so I don't know why they didn't catch it sooner .
Thank you for the P&PT's!
