Sig Others & Big Spending "Before the baby"

KatieLeigh79 wrote: Is it just my household or anyone else finding that your Sig Other keeps buying things stating its "the last thing before the baby is born?" Granted my husband works hard - and provides for me and wants to give me the option to not work if at all possible but right now we are up to (in major purchases since the lines turned pink):

-A 57 inch HDTV
-300 Disc DVD Changer
-A new Dishwasher
-Remote control thats all computerize and touch screen for this new entertainment center
-Massive amounts of dvds etc that he either buys or copies

I have been trying to save $ *laugh* and figure maybe after the baby i can break down and buy myself a new outfit when i get rid of the baby weight.. just not sure if anyone elses DH etc is giving them the "well this will be the last thing i buy for a while with the baby coming" excuse.

Kaitlin'smom replied: my dh went out and got a new digital camera and camcorder. I was sticker shocked! Ihave to admit though I LOVE the digital camera! lovebirds.gif Way to go hubby!

KatieLeigh79 replied: *sigh* well at least i know now im not the only one - sticker shock is when you see a 4500 television set/entertainment center thingie show up on your doorstep tongue.gif.. i just hope we get some use out of it with the baby here tongue.gif We had already had the camcorder and digital cam a while ago so that made it a little less for him to want, but boy smile.gif for what they do we could have some serious fun clothes shopping after the little ones arrive smile.gif rolleyes.gif

MommyToAshley replied: A really nice digital camcorder/camera here too. We also spent a lot on the baby furniture (we got a really nice crib that converts to toddler bed and then full bed or love seat) We spent a little extra on the dressers, but she can use them when she gets older too. We also bought all the baby stuff before she was born.. so that might have kept him on track. smile.gif

We upgraded our computers and bought some software for the business before she was born, but that's about it.

DH is thinking about a new big screen...LOL HE can keep thinking.

And, we are shoppin for the dishwasher now. Our is about to poop out smile.gif

CantWait replied: we actually need a few things before the baby gets here, ie. a new kitchen table since my son's room is in the old dining room and the table is too big for the kitchen, a futon for the basement since that is now an entertainment room. However Robbie would also like to buy a $650 shed, I'm not really sure if that is a neccesity. dry.gif

Schnoogly replied: Well, we bought our first house about the time I got PG--closed when I was 10 weeks and moved when I was 11. Don't move while PG. Seriously. I was so tired I could hardly stay awake past 6pm and I thought I was going to lose it w/the hormones etc. I broke down and screamed on the phone to the truck rental company when the truck broke down on the way to my house. Don't mess with the prego lady!!

And we bought barely any baby stuff--minimum clothes, no furniture except an arms reach co-sleeper which we haven't even used (he only sleeps RIGHT next to me), carseat, stroller, a baby bjorn (on sale) lots of cloth diapers (this was the big splurge--fitted kissaluvs diapers). Oh, and my breastpump. The rest-swing, bouncy seat, some blankets, and the crib--were gifts. (The crib is now his changing table). I did buy lots of maternity clothes since I gained so much weight I kept growing out of the clothes I had.

Maybe your DH is having his mid-life pre-baby crisis?? ohmy.gif
Sounds like a discussion of expenses is in order. I'm happy to forward copies of Iain's medical bills (I'm sure yours will be healthy but you never know!)--he is worth way more than our house now w/ 3 weeks of NICU and 2 surgeries. Even a normal, healthy vaginal delivery ain't cheap, even with insurance!!!

supermom replied: Well, if it makes you all feel any better, since last Thanksgiving, we've had to replace the Washer and Dryer, the dishwasher, and our pickup truck (blew the whole engine, and it wasn't worth the cost of replacing), well, we're still looking for one (necessity for work with what we do!), the refrigerator has had to be repaired, and the vet bill for the dog, well, don't even want to go there.....So, we've been on a spending spree, but not one that we chose.

Glad that this kid is not going to need much - mostly use what we've got, but would like a cradle for next to the bed.

But I wouldn't worry too much about your DH unless he is really overblowing your budget, and then maybe talking to him some would help. Good luck - hugs!!

MamaMartie replied: biggrin.gif Well with this baby we haven't bought much. My biggest expenditure has been new cloth diapers. With 3 other children I have all the basic baby stuff. I spent $100 at Baby Depot. But I didn't have many girl clothes, b/c we were lent most of Meggie's. The store was closing so everything was at least 70% off. I got all her clothes, coats, etc for the first 2 years.

Although, now that I think about it, at the begining of this pg, my dh did get a new computer. I told him if I got a baby her could get a new computer. He was online ordering from dell the same week I told him I was pg. rolleyes.gif But since he is a computer programmer and we haven't gotten an new one for close to 3 years I don't really count it as a luxury. Plus we can write it off on our taxes as a work expence.

With the first 2 we bought some "before the baby stuff." I think it is a fairly normal thing to do, especially for men. For some unknown reason anythng marked "Panasonic" acts as a comfort item. As for me I'd be psyched to get some new clothes after this baby.

Oh wait! I just remembered, I bought not one but 2 pairs of Nike sneakers yesterday (it was buy one get one 50% off). So I guess that is my before the baby comes luxury item. Then again I've been wearing the sae pair of nikes for over 2 years now.

Kaitlin'smom replied: oh well I forgot our heat went! In December so I was 8 months preggy! So we had to get a new furnace. It did get kinda chilly in the night but clothes and lots of blankets did the trick. Of coure we had to get some baby things but most everything were gifts!

MommyToAshley replied: LOL!!! My DH needs lots of comfort. LOL rolling_smile.gif

dhoppygirl replied:

I totally agree with this. We also bought our first house when I was 15 weeks pregnant...I was so tired and grumpy!!! I did most of the packing, so our old place was a mess for three weeks because I barely had any energy to pack anything! Plus, the day after we moved in we had Easter Brunch at our new house!!! Besides buying the house, we bought a new washer and dryer, the baby room furniture (crib that converts to bed, and a dresser that is also a changing table, but then later can just be a dresser), uhhh what else...I know we (some just DH) bought more things, I am still paying off the credit cards!! The hospital and doctor bills are paid off finally, though!!!

dhoppygirl replied: By the sounds of it, our economy should be booming, not in the dumps!!!! We are all spending money, whats going on here? rolling_smile.gif

CantWait replied:

ack I know what you mean supermom. Our dog has reacurring ear infections and the vet bills keep piling up 2cents.gif 2cents.gif 2cents.gif 2cents.gif 2cents.gif 2cents.gif
