So excited!
mommy~to~a~bunch wrote: We're picking up our baby chicks on Wednesday! We bought some white & brown Leghorns to raise for eggs. We got 40, hopefully enough will survive to give us enough eggs. I'm just so excited about it! Everything is set up & ready for them. The kids are excited too. We went to the store yesterday, and there were baby ducklings & chicks, and Abby especially loved watching them. She kept saying "caaa caa caa" for "quack, quack, quack" over & over again. It was so cute!
Kaitlin'smom replied: awww how cute. my MIL is thinking of getting some to rasie for eggs as well. She already does cows for beef, but its only males she is not willing to try for milk.
lisar replied: Awww. I want some but dont want to have to deal with them so I havent yet.
A&A'smommy replied: awwwww I wish I could do something like that..
coasterqueen replied: That's great . You will have to tell me how it is raising them (honestly ) because everyone I've talked to said it's a PITB, but I'd love to do it too. My MIL has tried to convince us to do this for some time, but we are so busy and I'm just not sure we could handle the responsibility yet. So for now we get ours from our local farmer. I LOVE organic eggs - you REALLY do taste the difference. I thought I was nuts on the taste thing but others I've talked to says the same thing.
Good luck.
HuskerMom replied: How exciting! We had talked about getting chickens when we move out to the country. Dh grew up with them and I've never really been around them so I hope we end up getting some!
Mommy2BAK replied: Ooh cool! Blakely would love it if we had some chicks. We've seriously thought about buying a chicken farm in our town. We probably will do something like that once the kids all go to school so that I can help dh.
AlexsPajamaMama replied: We always had laying hens when I was growing up and its a very neat experience. My dad has had turkeys too.
gr33n3y3z replied: You will have to show us some pics when they get there
austins mom replied: awww.. good luck..
Crystalina replied: Oh cool! We've had a few leghorns but we've found the Rhode Island Reds and Golden Comets give huge eggs. Our Golden Comets were always giving us double yokes.
Do you butcher any? We are getting ready to get some broilers in. We haven't gotten our laying hens yet. We went to Tractor Supply and I tested them and most of the ones they had were roosters.
mommy~to~a~bunch replied: Hmmm...next time we'll get some Rhode Island Reds to try! We don't butcher any, we don't know how, but are planning on buying some already butchered from our neighbor.
LOL, I'll share pics too, I promise!
holley79 replied: Oh can't wait to see pictures.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: Neat!
kimberley replied: awww yay! sounds like fun!
My3LilMonkeys replied: I love baby chicks - they are my favorite!!
Crystalina replied: We butcher but not with the hot water. Yuck that's stinky. DH just skins them. Much easier and so much less mess.
julesmom replied: We got 3 Rhode Island reds and 3 bard rocks. They are growing way too fast though! We got them for the eggs, we don't butcher. Last year, we got 6 from a farmer and they all ended up being roosters! We gave them back when one went after dd. Plus, we want eggs, not noise. lol. So this year, we got ones that are 99.9% females. They are in a crate in my kitchen right now. It's too cold outside for them just yet.
mommy~to~a~bunch replied: LOL, I hope we don't end up with any roosters . I'm so excited for tomorrow, even more so than the kids .
Kirstenmumof3 replied: My sister's friend raised chickens on her property. It wasn't a farm, but I remember my sister calling and asking if I needed eggs. I never realized how many eggs you get from the chickens. I think that's a great idea! Good Luck!
sparkys2boys replied: I remember as a child my grandparents always had ducks and chickens, etc. I loves all the babies in the spring
