Speaking of "looking" your age - spawned from Super Nanny discussion

coasterqueen wrote: I've heard time and time again from women IRL that they cut their hair to a more "motherly" type hairdo once they had kids. I often wondered about this because it well, just confused me. My boss' wife said this before I had Kylie mentioning how she cut her long hair short because, well you just don't have long hair as a mother, as she put it. Edit: Oh and she wasn't meaning that kids pull hair, etc. She was talking about not having long hair because you don't look like a mother.

I have long hair......do I not look like a mother? tongue.gif

I'm just wondering is there something I didn't read before becoming a mother or should mothers have a shorter hairdo? Several other people have mentioned this to me in the past too and I just don't get it.

Maddie&EthansMom replied: LOL! My mother had hair down to her waist until she was 50 years old. She got breast cancer and cut it off before her treatments and donated it to "Locks of Love." She has kept it in a bob since then. Fortunately she never needed chemo, but we weren't sure at the time she cut it.

My hair is shoulder length. I've never heard of anyone cutting their hair to look more 'motherly.' I guess it is a mind over matter type thing. It never mattered to me. laugh.gif

My2Beauties replied: News to me unsure.gif I have long hair too and I'm a mommy! Hanna pulls the crap out of it too, but I don't think it makes anyone look less motherly! My mom has medium length hair, never had short hair and she is 50!!!

mommy2owen replied: My mom had long hair up until I was 20, now it is just below her sholders, not long but not short either.

My hair is a couple inches below my chin, would you consider that long?

TANNER'S MOM replied: I cut my hair in all my preg. But it was do to health reasons. I had to lay in a bed 24/7 and it was hard with my curly hair. It would be tangled and painful. That is the only reason..

Now my hair is shoulder length...and wild and curly! I have always had wild hair...

When I mentioned the way she looked..it was due to her lack of clothing on top..and I too do that on occasion..but man I don't my kids to see my BB"s! lol

akbutterfly83 replied: Most everyone I know has long hair that are mothers.... they never cut it just because it was more "motherly".... I don't think I've ever heard of that....

I normally have long hair, but since I had so meny problems, and had to almost shave my head last year.... I have kinda short hair... well alomost to my sholders......

But I'm gunna grow it out.... I want long hair for my re-new of vows, when we get to finally do it.... since we didn't get to have a big wedding....

DansMom replied: Don't you dare cut your hair!! It's one of the things I notice in the photos you've posted, that your hair is long and wavy and frames your face so nicely.

I have a friend with long gray/white hair, and she says she was told that once it goes grey you either die it or cut it. Long gray hair is not allowed, especially when it's out loose and not in a bun. So she flaunts it! She loves to do what she's told is not the norm.

MomToMany replied: Don't touch your hair, Karen!! That's a ridiculous reason to cut your hair. My mom had hair down to her butt when we were growing up. She wore it in a braid, then rolled up on top of her head held in place with a hair thingy (looks like a half-circle with a stick that goes through it).

My hair used to be long, til I got it chopped off last May. It was down to my butt!! I love long hair on women! Mine was so shabby looking, it needed to get cut. I'm growing it out again.

Have you also noticed all the older women have short, curly hair?? That will NOT be me when I'm that old!!

Boys r us replied: I don't know..the only reason I would cut my hair is if it is what I want!

People say they cut their hair shorter when they become a mom b/c it's easier not to have to hassle with it. But to be honest, having shorter hair requires more trouble than long, because at least with long hair you can pull it back or throw it up when you're in a rush!

Anyhow..your hair looks great!

coasterqueen replied: LOL Tracy and Mollie rolling_smile.gif

I'm not going to cut my hair. Although there are times I want to but then chicken out. I did get long layers in it which you can't tell from my pics now so much.

I just wondered if anyone had that mentality on the board. I didn't think so I just keep seeming to hear it IRL so I wondered. biggrin.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied: I knew a woman who did just that, it wa sreal short, kinda cute at the time but not it looks like an old ladies hairdo short and curly totaly not her

me I have long hair and love it, I did not like my hair short to hard to do. Altho I could use a trim again blink.gif

kimberley replied: rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif i have heard this a million times! especially from my old filipino aunts dry.gif but i still have long hair. they see long hair as a girlish thing and that as a mother, you should carry a more mature, sophisticated look. well you can cut all my hair off and i still won't look sophisticated or mature in my track suit and kicks tongue.gif laugh.gif

booey2 replied: I used to have long hair, before we got married. Then when I had to start going to work everyday and not just rolling out of bed to go to class, (I met my DH at university) I had it cut so it was easier to handle. I also got sick of put it up in ponytails. or hair clips. I am doing that now and it is a sign to get it cut, gotta make an appointment real soon. rolling_smile.gif

mom21kid2dogs replied: I got a "mommy" cut but it had nothing to do with "looking more motherly", whatever the heck that is rolling_smile.gif . For me it was purely a time issue. I no longer had the time to deal with my previously short but labor intensive "do". Combine that with the fact that I was quitting work, thus cutting our family income by 45% so I gave up plenty of my former "high maintenence" ways, including perms and professional hair coloring. It's short and straight for me! I love it but I wouldn't begrudge anyone their long locks!!

mom89 replied: I kinda have long hair(shoulder length)and I'm a Mother!! lol

5littleladies replied: My hair is just below my shoulders. My cuts are not based on anything but how I will look. happy.gif

A&A'smommy replied: ha I just saw this I have shoulder length hair dh likes it layered tongue.gif

Josie83 replied: Of all the stupid things to tell you! Although my mother passes comment about me not looking like a mother, but that is not just about my hair dry.gif My hair is now more thasn halfway downmy back and I would be very adverse to getting it cut! Cassie loves it and is always playing with it, and I don't think her dad would be best pleased if I cut it off either! wink.gif xx

Kaitlin'smom replied:
Kaitlin is starting to do this with my hair, she likes to brush it wub.gif I love that. In fact I cant wait until we can play beauty shop (with out the sizzors though laugh.gif )

jdkjd replied: I've never heard about short hair=motherly...

That chick on Super Nanny looked slutty, big difference. And when does she have the time to sunbathe??????

I'm probably not going to have tan lines (that aren't farmer-tan ones) until the girls are in middle school. wink.gif

Josie83 replied:
She plays with it quite a lot when we're sitting together watching television or if I'm reading her a story. If I carry her she loves to stroke it and play with it over my shoulder as well wub.gif xx

Jamison'smama replied: I have heard about the "mommy-cut" as well. I also have longer hair--past my shoulders but there is never any doubt I look like a mom---lately there has either been spit-up on my shoulders, big wet spots where I started leaking in public because some child was crying, toys falling out of my bag and the fact that I carry a bag instead of the cute purses that hang in my closet--oh and there is ALWAYS a hair tie in my bag for those times when being a mom makes having my hair off my face necessary or I would go nuts.

Have you seen the Saturday Night Live "commercial" for mom-jeans? That is probably more realistic smile.gif
