Speaking of the price of gas

MommyToAshley replied: Thanks... interesting article. This is the first time I have heard about any kind of "carbon" cap. And, not to sound like a broken record, but we really should be looking at alternatives to using gas/oil as the only fuel source.

mommy~to~a~bunch replied: Hmmm... I have to think about that for awhile. I don't see how increasing the cost of energy is the answer to anything.

Yeah, we're all made of money, this won't bother us much. Maybe because some families are deciding on paying for gas to get to work & feeding their families? dry.gif

mckayleesmom replied:
Flexible??? growl.gif Is that what they think this is?

jcc64 replied:

Actually, Mollie, I've heard this notion MANY times before from many different economists. I freely admit economics is not my forte, so I can't jump into the debate with any kind of authority. Just letting you know that this idea is not a new one.

mommy~to~a~bunch replied:
I avoid economics usually, so this is the first I've heard of it, and I'm no expert either. I think the government is out to screw us all for all we're worth, so we are working for THEM. They are doing an excellent job of it too.

my2monkeyboys replied: What this equates to is that the wealthy will be able to buy more carbon usage, while those of us who are already strapped will be trying to figure out how to get to work and the grocery store.
Of course if it's more expensive people will buy less... duh! The problem is that the people who will buy less will be those who can't afford it, and not because they're trying to "save" money on "frivolous" expenditures.
The way to lower prices is a law of supply and demand. Supply more, the price drops.
We need to find a way to get oil from someone (ourselves perhaps!?!?!) that won't use that money against us. Then we can use it how we see fit, instead of worrying about who it's going to.
Once we straighten out the supply/cost issues then we can focus on different means of fueling our cars.

This whole article sounds like a pile of horse manure to me. growl.gif growl.gif

Boys r us replied: I guess I'm just not in a serious mood today because.. I read the article and for some reason the only thing that shocked me was this quote.. blink.gif

luvmykids replied:
I was curious where they got that number, maybe it's because NM is a "poor" state but here that is pretty good money and I don't know many people with that kind of income sleep.gif

mommy~to~a~bunch replied:
I wonder where they got that number too, as around here, that's great money here. We don't even make that much!

Boys r us replied: They said Family income..so I'm just thinking about all of the families were there are 2 people working. I don't know..I just find it hard to believe that the average is only 60k for a household income. I thought that was pretty low.

My2Beauties replied: That's actually a higher estimate then what I have read, in Ky the average family income is lower than $40k. Honestly living on $60k a year here wouldn't be impossible but if you wanted to own a home you'd have to live in some pretty sheisty (sp?) neighborhoods and you could forget having a really nice car or anything like that, at least in the city that is. In the surrounding counties it'd probably be an alright living. But not here...no way.

luvmykids replied:
That might be sort of average for two incomes here, but still a little on the high side. Most ppl I know, even with both working, are closer to $50K. Of course there are exceptions, we have an Intel plant, Sandia National Labs, etc....but the average joe is definitely below the $60 even if his wife works.

Boys r us replied: I guess I'm just oblivious to my own little world, I just looked up the average family income in our area, $56,450. I'm like LeaAnn though..I would think it would be hard to own a house etc etc on that household income. I mean, just the price of a 1/2 acre lot here is like 80k and about $400k for a pretty average house.

moped replied: We would die here only making 60K/year.........I make more than that alone, could never live on that alone. The average home here is $450K ohmy.gif

Remind me why I live here again?

my2monkeyboys replied: WoW ! Homes are high where y'all live. Here you can build a really nice house, say 2500-3000 sq ft for about $250-300k. And that's a nice house here, not the average. Most folks around here live in 2000 or less sq ft, if that gives you an idea. Our house is a bit small at only 1300 sq ft. I wish it was a good 800-1000 sq ft larger, but right now it's what we have.

PrairieMom replied:
ohmy.gif even that is high! We have a 4 BR 3 bath house and it would probably go for $170 here.
To build an average, home, 2Bd 1 Bath unfinished basement will be about $120 here. huh.gif
Come to SD my friends!!

~Roo'sMama~ replied:
Oh wow I was thinking it was HIGH! tongue.gif We are a single income family so I'm sure that makes a difference, but Dh makes about half that - a little more than half now that he is working two jobs so that we can eat and pay bills.

5littleladies replied:
Same here. wink.gif

coasterqueen replied: I think people tend to overlook other areas of town except their own. wink.gif So the average home price to them is much different than what is REALLY out there. I know around here you can find 1/2 a million dollar homes in MANY MANY areas of our city, but there are also LOTS of homes for 1/4 of that. Our city is pretty much all over the board on house ranges and incomes.

my2monkeyboys replied: Yeah, we have 2 high-end neighborhoods, one is in the millions, the other is in the upper hundred-thousands. We also have a few of the really old, single-wide trailer/ low-income apt. neighborhoods, but the avg overall is probably $100k.

My2Beauties replied: We have 4 bedrooms, 1 1/2 baths, full finished basement, 2 car detached garage and a decent size yard for the low price of $137k here thumb.gif Now there are a lot of neighborhoods here where the houses are a million plus and then we have areas of town where you can get a house for under $20k too..so we have a wide range of real estate in this city as well. Of course the really high end homes are way out on the outskirts of the city but still close enough to consider Louisville.
