Sugar free ok for toddlers?

kayla's mama wrote: I was wondering if it was ok to give Kayla surgar free jello. My mom said no but was just wondering what you all thought?

TIA

BTW, we made it St. Louis fine with no problems wink.gif

luvmykids replied: I have no idea, do you mean because of the sugar substitute? I still don't know, just wondered if that may be why she's thinking that.

kayla's mama replied: I think it has something to do with the sugar sub. I think she's blown smoke but not sure.

CAMSMOM1 replied: I don't see a problem with it? dunno.gif I would think it was safe. But....does it have Splenda in it? I've heard some bad things about Splenda, that is, if you use it regulary. kwim?

Glad you made it to St. Louis. I knew you couldn't resist talking to me, that's why you're sneaking on the boards, huh? rolling_smile.gif

kayla's mama replied:

You are so funny rolling_smile.gif rolling_smile.gif

MommyToAshley replied: I don't make it for Ashley because I don't trust all the sugar substitutes out there. I know the studies are "inconclusive" but I would rather error on the side of caution.

gr33n3y3z replied:
what is wrong with regular jello?

I feel why put a chemical in a childs body if they dont need it for medical reasons
jmo

Momof3inMe replied: I make sugar free jello all the time b/c its a "free" snack for me and Em and the boys eat it too and I have never had any problems with them having it.

AlexsPajamaMama replied: Hmm, I didn't know there was anything wrong with it.
I did ask Alex's ped about giving him flavored what that is sweetened with Splenda and he basicly said there is no harm in it as long as its not the only thing that he is drinking.
So Im sure a little bowl of sugar free jello would be fine for a treat dunno.gif

mummy2girls replied: depends.. the splenda is ok if you have to pick a sub( so i dont recommend it all the time) but the aspartine is not good at all. I heard bad things about that...

redchief replied:
There have been recent serious concerns about Splenda. There's a group trying to get it pulled from the market entirely.

I'm not crazy about sugar substitutes for kids. I've even stopped using them myself, instead reducing the amount of sugar I use, period.

AlexsPajamaMama replied:
Ya, I guess it sounds safer to just cut down on sugar rather than use subs.
We don't give DS sweets very often, he'd rather eat healthier foods than candy and stuff anyway

redchief replied:
Good for him!!! Perhaps he could convince my youngest son (who's 19) that healthy eating is better. That kid is a sugar-aholic!!!

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I prefer just limiting real sugar before eating substitutes. But that's just me. Like others said, why not just give the real thing? Or when baking, and you want to use a sugar sub, use something more natural like real (not Log Cabin) maple syrup or apple sauce.

Elissa,MyLove replied: How old is KAYLA?

My3LilMonkeys replied: Well as a one time (or once in a while) thing I don't think it's a huge deal. I accidentally bought the sugar free instead of regular last time and I let Brooke eat it because I was too cheap to throw it away. tongue.gif I personally choose not to use sugar substitutes for myself or my children normally.

AlexsPajamaMama replied:
LOL Im sure when he is older he will not be as willing to eat an apple for snack! But maybe the healthy eatting habits will stick! smile.gif
