Sunscreen reaction

wendy26 wrote: Does anyone have any suggestions for anything else i can use as sunscreen for my 9 month old daughter....everytime i use baby suncreen on her face, her eyes get all red and swollen and her nose runs......should i take her to the dr for this or is it quite common?

PrairieMom replied: my 4 year old had a allergic reaction to sunscreen for the first time this summer. He got a bumpy rash all over where I put it. I used baby sunscreen, I don't remember the brand, but my Ped suggested Water babies brand, and I used that and he didn't react.
I know they make organic /holistic sunscreen, but I don't know what it is called.

Miranda1127 replied: cocoa butter. check with your doctor but most natural cocoa butter formulas are a natural sunblock, my mom use to use it when we were little (after a nasty episode w/ my little sister) and we never got burned. but we are in different times and it may not be strong enough now. i would ask the pedi (you never know)

MyBabeMaddie replied: We have been using banana boat for babies, it seems very mild I actually got some in my eyes and it was just like water

hoosier momma replied: Arbonne skin care has a baby line. Their products are all natural and the sunscreen is awesome. It is a little pricey, but one bottle should last all summer.

amynicole21 replied: It could be a reaction to PABA - I have a sensitivity to it. You can look for PABA-free formulas - they are usually listed on the bottle. Actually, I wonder if they even use PABA in sunscreen anymore - so many people were sensitive to it. dunno.gif

boyohboyohboy replied:
this is exactly what our dermatologist told us and he told us to use the water babies brand...
also there is new stuff out there, that has the uva uvb protection..( i think thats what it is) but its the paba that gets the kids....

Boo&BugsMom replied:
This is what I was going to say. Tanner is HIGHLY allergic to PABA. We have to use Water Babies on him, it's PABA free. Make sure it says PABA FREE. If it doesn't, even if it's not listed on the ingredients, it probably contains it. PABA is still widely used, even in many kid friendly sunscreens and adult sunscreens, so that's why you should look for something that says PABA FREE on it just to be safe. smile.gif

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Wil has super sensitive skin and the only sunscreen that doesn't make him breakout is the Coppertone baby - maybe its the water baby one. Its in the pink bottle. We've tried stuff from the health food store thinking it would be better, but it wasn't. I've tried California Baby which was like $12 or so for a small tube. I've tried Arbonne. I've tried a handful of others, but thats the only one that works for us.

My friend and I were at her pool the other day. I put the pink one on my kids. She put an expensive Aveno brand on hers. Both were 50+ and waterproof. We had dinner with them that night and low and behold, her kids both had red marks all over their bodies. I felt awful for her. So noooooo, to Aveno (although I highly recommend their soaps). Oh and I love the Arbonne baby lotion, but only Wesley can use it. Wil breaks out.

Mommy2Isabella replied: AHH I knew someone already had this happen. We went to the pool today and I put sunscreen on Bellas face and everywhere else, But it only irritated her face.

What can I do to help with the reaction. Or should I let it go away on its own. Thing is I think I used Water Babies sunscreen ... ya thats what we used ...

Any other sunscreen suggestions??

PrairieMom replied:
we were given a prescription antihistamine for Benjamin. My dr said that is usually what they do.

Boo&BugsMom replied: I just used some over the counter hydrocortisone (sp?) cream and gave him benedryl (he was 3 at the time though). It eventually went away on it's own.
