Talking about 9/11 and in light of recent events - Has it affected how you travel?

luvmykids wrote: I'm just curious, I was never afraid of flying and have flown since 9/11, just brief flights, but I have a moment before I board where I pause for a minute and think about the people who so innocently boarded that day and wonder when it will happen again ....

And every time we travelled after that day, I had this thing that DH and I couldn't be on the same plane in case something happened, terrorist attack or crash, I wanted us to have the odds that one of us would still be here for the kids.

I think I would have a hard time getting on a cross country or international flight, even more so after the recent events in London.

Nina J replied: For me personally, no. If my times up, it's up. I can only trust in security and hope if their is a terrorist plot, it will be foiled before I get on the plane. I'm not scared to get on a train either, since the terrorist attacks involving trains. I just think to myself, I don't have to be in a plane to be a victim of a terrorist attack or accident of some kind. It could happen anywhere, anytime, and I would rather spend my life having fun then worrying about if I'm going to die.

I can understand why people get nervous now though, happy.gif

C&K*s Mommie replied: I agree totally with Nina. But I voted yes to answer the poll.

However, I have never flown a day in my life, so my nerves would be less on thinking of that particular plane being a target, and more on flying...in the sky....above perfectly suitable ground.... where gravity keeps us.... and possibly flying over water... where I have a double fear of water and flying above it wacko.gif .

amynicole21 replied: I'm flying next week happy.gif

A&A'smommy replied: I haven't actually flown since I was 2 years old and I haven't been on a plane (when my dad use to fly for work he was in the military) since I was about 6 years old. But anyway I think it would just depend on what IS going on at the time that I need to fly... I think I would be nervous anyway since I haven't been on one in a LONG time but the 9/11 thing is a kicker

Brias3 replied: I'm the same as Monica. I'll have that brief pause and I can't help but look around at the other passengers and wonder but I try not to let it scare me out of flying in general. We've flown quite a bit since 9/11, internationally and other, so we're not letting it stop our travel. The mind can't help but worry/wonder a bit though.

garrettsmom replied: I voted that it would depend on the current circumstances. I'm not afraid to fly, cuz like someone else said, if it's my time, then so be it. For me, because of all the security changes, flying just takes too long wacko.gif I would rather just drive where I have to go, unless I had to get somewhere in a timely manner.

kimberley replied: i have been flying since before i was 6yo so it really doesn't phase me. dunno.gif

Jackie012007 replied: I have never flown in my life and the thought alone scares the crap out of me... with every plane crash and whatever that happens nowadays, no thanks. I know they say you are more likely to get in an accident on the ground then in the air and all that, but the thought of flying sends me into dry heaves!! blink.gif

holley79 replied: If I have to fly somewhere I have to fly somewhere. Dh has flown many times since 9/11. They can't be in uniform though when they fly commercial for safety reason. dunno.gif They haven't had any problems though. *knock on wood* The scary part is they were on the trains in Spain not a week prior to those attacks. sleep.gif

ashtonsmama replied: Well, still being in Europe, and fairly close to London, it scared me a bit to hear all the news recently, however small it may be. It scares me, yes, but I'm not going to let it control my life. I have so much more to live for, so many places to see!

I like flying in general, so it's not going to stop me.

But I honestly hope that 9/11 was a one time thing, I'm not waiting for it to happen again, I'm praying it doesn't.

Kirstenmumof3 replied: I don't really have a choice. If we were to drive to Toronto it would take 18 hours.

3_call_me_mama replied: Well DH has sworn off flying. not out of fear, but out of disgust for what things have turned to.
Ticket prices are out of this world, security is incredibly tight (not that that is a bad thing) and there are rights that he feels are violated by all teh restrictions. Plus flying with 2 smal children, soon to be 3, is just insane now days.
He'd rather drive the distance (assuming it isn't over seas LOL) and to deal withteh expense and hassle in teh car, than to pay someone to treat him like crap, search his stuff and have our kids run amok all over the airport.
Personally I would still fly If i had to. Or if there was somewhere that i needed to go / wanted to go and the prices weren't bad. But after teh way we got treated last tiem we flew with the kids it will be a very lon gtime before we fly again.
And i agree with soem of Dh's thought.. I feel that teh security is a good thing but some things have been taken too far.....
