Teething...Chicken Bone?!?!?!?!?

LillysMum wrote: Lilly is 4 months old now & has just started showing the glimmer of some bottom front teeth. My sister & grandmother keep saying that I should give her a chicken bone when we have chicken but I'm not interested in this. I think it's gross, to say the least.
I think (as does my husband) that bones are for dogs, not children. What can I do to keep them from handing her a bone? They both say they'll do it when I'm not around. It's starting to upset me.

maestra replied: Chicken bones can splinter- it's the reason you aren't supposed to give them to dogs. What if she chewed on it, and it cracked. She could really cut up her gums, not to mention what would happen if she swallowed a splinter.

PS.- If they say things like that, then I would make sure that they weren't alone with her. My inlaws threatened to pierce Jaci's (my 2 year old) ears when she was an infant when they were alone with her, so they never were.

Josie83 replied: Okay i have never heard of anything so strange! ITA with what Michelle said, they are too dangerous to give her! I would freeze a cloth or teething ring to help soothe her pains or rub some Bonjela on where the teeth are eruptin. I would NOT give hera chicken bone, your husband is right!! xx

gr33n3y3z replied: I agree with everyone else

MomToMany replied: ITA!! She shouldn't have chicken bones! The only thing you can do is to not let her out of your site.

Kaitlin'smom replied: ohmy.gif Chicken bones...NO WAY those could hurt her. I would tell them you will not give them to her because of the risks involoved and if you love her then you wont either and you will STOP telling me to, and joking about it.

I would not be leaving them with her eather, I only let me eldest sister watch Kaitlin 1/2 day ONCE I did not appricaite what comments were made in regurard to food, and I saw what the did with a nephew giving him sugare in the form of icecream and frosting at 4 months old ohmy.gif

moped replied: No Chicken bones - that is nasty!

Someone told me about frozen mini bagels............so I gave Jack one yesterday and within minutees it was no longer frozen and he had chewed a great big piece off it - UGH............no more mini bagels either!

Kaitlin'smom replied: I used to give her frozen waffle sticks, they worked great, and she loved them espically when she got older she would end up eating them laugh.gif

aspenblue1 replied: I would stay away from chicken bones. Try the teething toys or freezing a washrag something like that. Also bones are very dangerous for dogs also they can kill them.

ammommy replied: She sounds like my Grandmother. I had a hard time convincing here that they were a no-no. I told her that the kids could choke and she said, "well, just dig it out, then ohmy.gif " A whole different generation....

Frozen washclothes worked best for Megan. She hated the teething toys.

loveydad replied: OH geez. If dogs can choke on them don't you think a baby can too!? Weird!

I agree with Maestra! My relatives wanted to do weird things with the twins like spank them (NO!!) Slap their hands (NO!!!!) and throw away their toys when they were naughty (NO!) So they never babysat for me.

ediep replied: oh how gross!!!! I would not give my baby bones to chew on!!!

LillysMum replied: Thank you! So I'm NOT the only person who doesn't like the idea of the bone. I bought Lilly a ton of teething toys this weekend plus tylenol & some stuff to numb those sore gums. I'm not letting her stay w/ my oldest sister until her teeth are in or we come to an agreement that there will be NO bones in my daughter's mouth.
Each time I talk to someone new about it (in my family), I find a few more places she won't be going - if chicken is in their dinner plans.

Thanks everyone! I knew I wouldn't give in but also needed some opinions of other parents.

vickiforest20 replied: I have not heard of that, I would think a teething toy would be a better bet.
