The Olympics are Coming!

amynicole21 wrote: Is anyone else a freak about the Summer Olympics like me? I can't get enough of them. I'm so excited for them to start on Friday thumb.gif

DansMom replied: I used to be so totally into the gymnastics, until the women turned into super-freak preteens! laugh.gif I'll watch anyway---watching the tumbling fascinates me. At the least the men are adults.

Back in the 80s when Joan (Joni) Benoit won the marathon, that was a highlight for me---she was from my state (Maine) and I felt a lot of joy for her.

Anyway, I do love the olympics---summer and winter.

Jamison'smama replied: I LOVE the olympics! I will watch anything--even the obscure sports--great late-at-night when you can't sleep entertainment!

coasterqueen replied: I LOVE the Olympics...winter and summer. smile.gif My favorites are gymnastics and ice skating. tongue.gif

I just wonder if I will have time to watch them this year with Kylie, lol. rolleyes.gif

5littleladies replied: Yep-Another olympics lover here. My kids watch them with me and I get such a kick out of watching them try and "perform" like the people on tv. It's too cute! smile.gif

jcc64 replied: Sports junkies in this house, big time. Will be watching, although I have some issues with the way the networks typically cover the Olympics. Sure, I like to watch the Americans compete, but I would like the opportunity to also view the events where we don't typically dominate. Unfortunately, they seldom get covered.
As a child, like many kids, I dreamed of competing in the Olympics. I was a serious competitive swimmer for several years, spending some 6 hours in the pool everyday, before and after school (beginning at 4am- can you imagine?!). I made it to the top of the Junior Olympics in my home state, before becoming interested in a life outside the pool (boys, really). It really gave me a good idea about how much these athletes have to give up to get to that level. Amazing, really.

amynicole21 replied: Not sure where I heard this - maybe Saturday Night Live many years ago, but it's become a staple in our house every Olympic year. Sung to the tune of the Olympic Theme Song:

This is the Olympic Theme Song
That you know so well, but you did not know the words!
(Repeat until the percussion starts then)

This is the drum part, this is the drum part

Not sure if this translates so well without the tune to back me up and my lovely singing voice! rolling_smile.gif My sister and I crack ourselves up singing this to eachother laugh.gif

Kirstenmumof3 replied: thumb.gif I plan to watch the olympics this year. I've never really had the chance to watch them.

DansMom replied: Jeanne, I feel so fortunate to be close enough to Windsor, Canada that I can tune into Canadian coverage. It's so much better.

Boys r us replied: Uhhhh for some reason I've never gotten excited about the olympics..actually they just frustrate me b/c all of my normal shows are off the air!

jcc64 replied: So, Tracy- is the coverage more balanced from Canada?

DansMom replied: For winter olympics at least, the coverage in Canada was more balanced, more multinational (while still featuring Canadian athletes), and there was more coverage overall---they devoted more time to the full events, not just the highlights or the final 6 skaters. Another thing I noticed was that they had more real-time coverage, whereas the US was taping but playing chosen events at a later time.

MomToJade&Jordan replied: Yes Amy I am a freak about the Olympics. I will be watching as much as I can. I have no clue what time any of it is going to be on out here though.

MommyToAshley replied: I'm excited, I love the Olympics! thumb.gif

Alice replied: I love it too! It's the only time I ever get to watch sports I'm not familiar with. And I love all the drama. THey're broadcasting a jillion hours of it-- you should be able to find something interesting any time of the day or night.

What's the first one you remember watching?? FOr me, I think it was the winter Olympics in Sapporo Japan-- 1972??

amynicole21 replied: The first one I really remember was with Mary Lou Retton. I got into diving when Greg Louganis was at his peak - I was sooo in love with him blush.gif
