The hurricane got me thinking

MyBrownEyedBoy wrote: What would you bring with you if you had to evacuate your house with just a few hours notice. Of course your kids and pets and clothes, survival stuff. But the little things that are irreplacable to you.
I would bring the quilt my grammy made me, Logan's grammy quilt, my digital camera and mem sticks, my wedding album and my teddy bear that I have had since before I was born. blush.gif Yes, I said teddy bear. Ain't no shame in needing a bit of childhood comfort. And my pillow, I can't sleep without my own pillow.

luvbug00 replied: My stuffed bunny Fufu and my gradparents and mya baby pics

A&A'smommy replied: computers (laptops), hard drive (Alyssa's pictures), photo albums and Alyssa's special box of stuff (clothes we brought her home in and stuff from the hospital)

booey2 replied: All of my pictures and vidoe related material.

kimberley replied: my puter and all CDs with pics, photo albums & pics, kids memory stuff and fav toys and of course, DH would pack his drums rolleyes.gif

kit_kats_mom replied: Since we live in a hurricane prone area, we have two large boxes with lists in them of things that we need to evacuate.
Hard drives from our PC's (where all of our pics and videos are)
Small safe that contains insurance stuff, home ownership proof, passports and ID's
K's blankie & stuffed monkey
my great grandmothers quilt
checkbook
stamps
camera/video camera
that's all we must have. We also have a large plastic tub that is in the garage that we stash a few other things but we leave it at home in a closet wrapped in plastic.

What a good idea!

TANNER'S MOM replied: I would take.. Tanner's Tommy doll. He has had him since he was born. Britt's George Monkey.. Pics of my Grandma... and cd of pics of the kids.

I would take my DH's cowboy hat off the rack.. where would he be without it.

And all the kids baby books.

redchief replied: Since I fit into the catagory of "emergency personnel who remain," I wouldn't be evacuating to a shelter, but we have evacuated the family in the past.

The kids were allowed to bring their pillow and "one special thing that could be carried." Since all our accounting is on the computer, I take my laptop. That's all I really need. Most of my important pictures have also been digitized and reside there as well.

One thing a lot of people don't think of is their pets. Many shelters don't accept them. Before there's an emergency evacuation order, find out what the designated shelter rules are regarding your pets. Our poor dog got stuck in the car for the whole of the last storm here. I felt so badly about that since the poor thing wasn't really crazy about bad weather anyway, but she survived okay. After the major hurricanes down south last year there were thousands of displaced pets who were basically left to fend for themselves. Unfortunately many didn't make it.

A&A'smommy replied:
Since we have been having so many I'm actually getting good at this stuff... rolleyes.gif but if things are this bad next year I will use your idea!!! VERY smart!! thumb.gif

kit_kats_mom replied:
Thanks. It is really just good for making sure we don't forget something important. Under the stress of an impending storm and two kids to take care of...it would just stink to forget something.

I also include a list of things to do before we leave such as turn off the power, fill up gas tank, turn off water, board up windows, make ice etc. I also have a "hurricane shopping list" that way I don't have to worry about what I need to buy. I have juice boxes, water, canned foods and other stuff that I can use to make meals.

Jamison'smama replied: Wow Cary--great planning!!!

I keep a copy of all my pictures--(burn them once a month or so) at DH's office until I can get them to my parents in Oklahoma--I have started scanning all of the "pre-digital" photos for that reason --I also have a quilt and some of my grandmother's jewelry that's important.
