The new Pope has been elected
kit_kats_mom wrote: I'm not a Catholic but the bells and the excitement of the people there are contageous. I love the sound of church bells.
mammag replied: Yeah, I'm watching it myself. I'm glad I was watching it when they put the smoke out. I'm not catholic either but my sister & mil are. I seem to be more excited about it than they are. I don't really even know why....I think it's more the historical aspect of it that is exciting to me.
~KARA~ replied: Im sitting here watching it on the news. I cant wait to see who it is and what he stands for as they put it on the news!
Mommy2BAK replied: Yeah!!! I am not Catholic either but all the excitement brought tears to my eyes!
mammag replied: Anyone know how long it takes to announce it??
Mommy2BAK replied: I heard them say about 45 minutes
mammag replied: Joeph Ratzinger........Pope Benedict XVI
3_call_me_mama replied: guess he's pretty conservative from what i've heard and read so far... he's the one that led the mass for the pope he's 78...and German Born...
Boys r us replied: I'm really suprised that they elected a pope with so much age on him..I know they need someone with a lot of experience behind him..but it seems like you would also want some who will be around for awhile.
JessC replied:
Yeah I am suprised too. I would have thought maybe they would have picked someone in their early 60's?
What is the age you have to be anyways?
My2Beauties replied: I agree - I mean sorry to sound rude but this guy may not have much time neither and then we're gonna go through this again!
5littleladies replied: I heard that was their intention. They said that John Paul II had been pope for too long and they wanted someone who wouldn't be pope as long.
3_call_me_mama replied: Actually I think the reason they picked someone so old is because you hold the office for life and there was apparently a lot of controversy about the last pope being in office so long. I'm not sure there is a specific age to be elected. I'm kinda surprised that they picked someone who was so opposite of the last pope. It'll be kind of an upheaval of the last 26 years to go from opposite ends of the spectrum and as mentioned by others, if he passes soon we will have to go through it again and undo all he does.... (just liek politics HUH?!)
A&A'smommy replied: awww crap I missed it! I'm with you Cary I'm not catholic but a new pope is exciting!
amymom replied: Any baptized male can be elected pope by the Cardinals but............... usually it is one of the Cardinals. If he wasn't a Bishop or even a priest he would immediately be ordained a priest and Bishop of Rome. Back in 1978 there were three Popes, the first one (can't remember his name) died after some years in the position, they elected an italian Cardinal who became Pope John Paul I. 33 days later he died and they elected Cardinal Karol Wojytal (sp?) who became Pope John Paul II. He honored the first JP by taking the new name he had used. He was only 58 one of the youngest Popes to be elected. It is said that they choose him so young because of the only 33 days till the First died. who knows??? it is supposed to all be a secret. Ok, I've bored you enough now. I'll stop.
jolene555 replied: Yes, my understanding is that they were wanting an older Pope this time around. An "intermitant Pope" if you will. I was told that because JPII was more active in his travels and physical outreach that he might have let the business side of the job go downhill. They wanted somebody in there who would take care of getting things back on track, the way JPII wanted.
This Pope is very similar to JPII in beliefs and conservative morals. After all, JPII hand picked this group of Cardinals practically by himself over his 26 year reign.
kimberley replied: YAY! it was extremely emotional to watch I agree he is very much like JPII in his views and that is a good thing.
anyone follow Nostradamus' predictions... that this Pope will be killed?
