The price of food
cameragirl21 wrote: This topic has me curious as it's been discussed here quite a bit and I don't really get it so I thought I'd ask. Ok, admittedly, I'm a vegetarian so I don't know anything about the price of meat but the food I eat hasn't gone up in price at all, rather it's become cheaper. I buy my berries at Publix and they have lower prices this year than last and I found a way to get inexpensive veggies by going to the growers' markets where I buy local and can get an entire week's worth of veggies for less than 12 bucks. Granted, I live in FL where much of the stuff is grown so I'm sure that helps. I also buy some fruit at the growers' market too. If you can find one of those in your city, you will save SO much money on fruits and veggies. My big splurge is raw milk, it easily costs me 10 bucks a week. Other than that, the cheese, whole grain bread, yogurt and nutrigrain waffles I buy are not more than they were before and I also buy some frozen, steam in the bag veggies at Target which cost less than 2 bucks a bag. I'm certainly not arguing, just wondering if either I haven't noticed a price increase or if perhaps there is other food out there I'm not buying that is more expensive.
mckayleesmom replied: Ive noticed an increase in everything.
My3LilMonkeys replied: A lot of stuff in our area has gone up - most noticeably for me boneless skinless chicken breasts - used to be $2.99 a pound on a bad day and now it's $4.59 a pound.
gr33n3y3z replied: We live in a resort area the prices go up when June hits after the summer they drop back down a little around Oct. thats what I see but I did notice the farmers markets prices are quite high this year Vs. last year
PrairieMom replied: I can't honestly say if prices have gone up here or not, since I recently since all this has been happening have switched to buying way more organic stuff. I will say tho, that just doing that has raised my grocery bill by at least $50. a week.
holley79 replied: I shop local growers as well and their prices have gone up a little. Groceries have gone up as well. I used to only spend 80.00 a week for groceries (not including soap, paper products ect just food) and it has increased to about 130.00 a week for us. Cost of living is going up but not our pay.
grapfruit replied: I admittedly, don't grocery shop NEAR as much as I should, but I have noticed.
For instance, I used to be able to get Kroger bread for $.89 a loaf to about $1.19 I'd say a $.30 jump is pretty major!
Also milk and other dairy products have went up a lot too. Veggies are about the same I'd say. Meat, crazy expensive.
Bamamom replied: My grocery bill has gone up from about $80-$90 a week to about $120 and I think I'm shopping smarter now than I used to (ie - buying in bulk and freezing more). I think it's just the price of gas affecting the price of everything else. Something, somewhere has to give, ya know?
Kentuckychick replied: Wow really?
Fruits and veggies are two of the things that have gone WAY up here. The prices of some veggies have gone up as much as $1.00/pound.
And of course no more tomatoes until we can grow them... blah.
We still buy them though I definitely feel it's more important to spend on fruits and vegetables than coke (which is way up) and stuff like that.
holley79 replied: What's so sad is it's cheaper to buy ho hos then it is to buy apples.
ZandersMama replied: Bread here is 219 for a loaf of the no name store brand. Milk is 4$ for 2L. Everything is gone up. Even Kraft dinner is 149 a box
Kentuckychick replied: Okay... I'm totally taking back my last statement...
It will never be more important to buy fruits and veggies than it is to buy Kraft dinner!
I love that stuff!!!
skinkybaby replied: It's gone up here. I need to go check out the farmer's market like I keep saying I'm going to
holley79 replied: I love me some Kraft Mac and Cheese. It use to be only like .49 a box now it's about 1.63 here.
HuskerMom replied: I haven't seen that much of a difference in the price of food here.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Ditto, because I live in a touristy place too. Plus, I live in a town that is anti-Walmart and all the big box stores, so you don't have as many options as far as bargain shopping. We have a lot of farmer's markets and fruit stands though, but like Lisa said, I've noticed produce has gone way up even at these "locally grown" places.
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Prices have definitely gone up here.
I liked taking advantage of the lower sales tax in FL!
luvmykids replied: Everything has gone up here, especially meats, fruits and veggies. Bread, milk, dairy....I can't think of anything that hasn't gone up.
Boys r us replied: Yeah ditto Monica..everything here has gone up a lot too!!! I'm a Diet DP-aholic and I used to be able to get them for $1.19/2 liter and now I'm paying a $1.89. All of the fruit and veggies are higher..I'll be glad in a few more weeks when our garden starts producing some veggies!!! and Braedon told me today he can "hear the blueberries getting ripe" LOL My kids go through string cheese like there's no tomorrow and now it's like $6 bucks for a 12 pack. It used to be around $4. We buy chicken breasts individually frozen at Sam's club and it's gone up from $10/bag to $13/bag. I could go on and on..but these are the main things that come to mind! We buy our beef from a local farmer and freeze it in the big freezer in the garage..though last week one of the boys left the freezer door open after getting a popscicle and we didn't notice for 2 days and had partically thawed meat and had to toss it all..and we're talking $1,000 worth of beef! Made me sick!! So now I'll be buying that too!
holley79 replied: What is the sales tax where you are???
MoonMama replied: I haven't noticed to much maybe a couple cents here or there on a few items, but honestly not bad. And I like you, I get a lot of fruits and veggies (at least those that can be grown here) every weekend at our farmers market. And the sutff I buy from there is organic and the cost is SOOO much less, and honestly lasts a LOT longer then what I buy in store.
Kentuckychick replied: Then you'd really like it here in Kentucky! We don't pay taxes for grocery store food (well I take that back -- things like soda and candy are taxed, but nothing else is). That's why we always bring 90% of our dry goods with us when we go on vacation!
luvbug00 replied: in the grocery store the prices are high. to cut costs we buy as much in bulk as possible which leads me to one word....COSTCO!
