Tipping service people

MyBrownEyedBoy wrote: I was reading in our local paper about which members of the service industry should be tipped. It said that, of course, waiters and delivery people should be tipped, but also your hair dresser. But that a lot of people don't know that. So I am just curious. I do, usually around 15 percent. But I like her a lot and only ever see her.

NummyMommy replied: I tip them depending on how I like they way I was treated, how long it took and how well they listened to me about the way I like my hair....although once I admit I refused to tip a rude hairdresser. Anywhere from 10% (for truely awful cuts) to 25%...even more if I have more then a cut done.

TANNER'S MOM replied: My best friend is my hair dresser.. she was an instructor at a beauty school for years ..she's good.

Even if she doesnt charge me for friends things.. She gets TIPPED well. I do the 20%.. That is how they make there money.. And when you get someone who is GOOD you know it...

I actually tip alittle more than that if they are cutting the boys hair.. They have to work really hard. The boys wont be still even Justin.. so they work hard fro there money too..

CantWait replied: YUP....and my waiter/waitress, the lady that does my eyebrows, but I think that's where it stops

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: OMG I have never even thought of NOT tipping my hairdresser! It's like what Mel said, it's how they make money. I tip 20%. I also tip people that give me spa services, manicures, pedis, all that stuff. I'll only tip servers 20% if they are really good...I've done that job and it's hard, but there are a lot of bad servers out there! I also tip take-out cashiers too...I've also done that job and they have to bag the food up and run around all the time.

~KARA~ replied: Depends if Im really happy with my hair or not!!

gr33n3y3z replied: I always tip no matter what

ediep replied: I always tip my hairdresser and the shampoo girl too.

Hillbilly Housewife replied: I usually tip anyone who does a service for me. Waiters/waitresses, hairdresser, nail person... (don`t konw what they`re called.... emlaugh.gif ) Coffee giver at the donut shop... lol

when we go out to restaurants with the kids, we tip VERY well. We always ask the waitress if she usually works on that night (wednesday or something) because we really enjoyed her service, and hope that next time we can have her as our watress since she was really good at bringing stuff at crucial times for the kids, didn`t have to ask her for crayons etc.... she (it`s USUALLY a she) really gets buttered up and is more than happy to give up the info of when she usually works.... so we tend to get the same waitresses over and over. tongue.gif

Like if we pay about 50$ for a meal.... (give or take, and including tax) She gets about 12 - 15$ tip. I konw it`s a lot, but when we leave a restaurant, there`s food EVERYWHERE. on the floor, the seats, the table....napkins everywhere...and the kids are loud, and we`re constantly asking for another spoon or fork or whatever... so the waitress actually earns it. smile.gif We don`t mind paying the tip - because the waitress usually remembers us and gives us a decent place to sit, away from crowds, and a table big enough to accomodate us - as in, LOTS OF ROOM!! laugh.gif

But if it`s to get my nails done - it costs 35$, I give 40$... and it`s usually 25cents on the 2$ for a bar.

So if the drink costs 4$, the waitress gets 50cents.

I HATE HATE HATE when restaurants add the tip to the bill - when you have no choice but to pay it.

ETA - my hairdresser gets 5$ for 50$, and 10 if it costs more than 50$.... but I RARELY go to the hairdressers... my hair is too long, it costs too much! wink.gif

OH - and DID YOU KNOW - that waitress tips don`t HAVE to be claimed if they make over 50$ in a shift - I mean that they only have to claim 50$ out of what they made... They have to be claimed if they are paid through debit or credit - but if it`s cash, they don`t have to claim anything over 50$. So if they make 45$ through credit/debit, and 50$ through cash... they still only have to claim 50$ (45$ through machines and 5$ cash) and the rest is free money... rolling_smile.gif not a lot of people konw that... at least that`s how it works in Canada

Boys r us replied: We would fall into the Excessive Tipper category! LOL We had a waiter tell us once in one of our favorite restaurants that they fight over who is going to wait on us.
When we go out to dinner as a family, which is usually 3 times a week, we spend about $65. We never tip less than $20. I want to be waited on, taken care of ...and when you come back in the next time and you've tipped them well before, you're gauranteed good service. In fact we have specific people we ask for at every restaurant we go to. At christmas time, we leave nice tips!
one night Rick and I went out and we had the best service we've ever had and we were only there for dessert after a movie. This girl was ON THE BALL and so friendly, I told Rick to leave her a good tip..our bill was 23 dollars and we paid for it with our checkcard and then Rick left her a $100 bill on the table. She chased us outside of the restaurant and asked us if we made a mistake, we told her, NO that she rocked and we appreciated it!

As for hair stylists, my MIL does my hair and of course it's free, but I give her a $40 tip everytime. She's saving me $120 every 6 weeks, it's the least I can do!

Kaitlin'smom replied: yep and depending on how well it was is how much she gets. same with resturants the better the service the more tip your gonna get with me, and some times I OVER TIP, but if the service was good then you deserve it. I have done some of the tipping jobs and its really not hard to smile and make sure they are taken care of, yes it was hard at times but I always smiled even if I was mad.

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Yeah, I agree. I spend like $22 on a haircut and will usually tip about 5 dollars. More for color and style. But like I said, I wouldn't use anyone eles and I want her to like me.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied:
Oh man, don't tell my DH that! I pay $80 to get my haircut and close to $130 for the full color and cut! So when all is said and done, I'm walking out paying close to $200 after tip! DH can't stand it...but it's the one thing I get to do for myself and I like how they do my hair. blush.gif

No one mentioned cabbies! I always tip pretty good when I take a cab or park vallet. DH will always give only like $2...I hand the guy a five or more when DH gets out!!

Hillbilly Housewife replied: I remember this one particular time where I tipped the girl wayyyyy too much... it was so funny though. I think I migh have posted abot it before.... it was her first day or her second day, and I had a pasta dish... I found a spaghetti noodle in my pasta - I put it aside...then the next tuime she came around, I looked really serious, and I told her that I found a spaghetti noodle in my bow tie pasta... I told her that Iw as allergic to spaghetti.

The poor girl didn`t know what to say - I was rolling with laughter!!! She got a REALLY GOOD TIP!!! rolling_smile.gif She was a good sport though!

MyBrownEyedBoy replied:
Prices in Idaho are much less than other places. I doubt there is anywhere intown that would charge that much. I just spent $80 on a cut, with highlights and style. DH would have kittens if I spent 200. LOL But I agree. It is something you do to make yourself feel good.

~Roo'sMama~ replied: Yes I do. Of course I get cheap hair cuts... it usually costs me like 13 dollars or something. blush.gif and then I tip $3-$5 which is a little high I know but when I was a waitress I always hated getting little tips. tongue.gif

A&A'smommy replied: I tip them when I go some place in the mall but when I'm at home I don't

dolfinrse replied: Dh, Zack, and I all go at the same time, the same lady cuts all our hair and we tip her $10.

jacobsmama replied: A cut, color and highlight for me is like 65.00 and I give 8-10 dollar tip. The same lady does my hair every time she is very good. I have long hair so other place it would be more like 80-100. I tip waitress/waiter also. We also tip our landscaper..??? blink.gif Is that crazy? When he does a good job (which he is a friend of family and onlly comes 2 x a summer) which is everytime my DH gives him a good tip.. He loves it. I was a waitress too it is nice to know your hard work is appreciated! blush.gif

My2Beauties replied: I usually tip my hairdresser at least $15 - she is extremely cheap and does a heck of a job. For a haircut, highlights (my underneath is fully colored dark brown and the top is blond with brown chunks), an eyebrow wax, and a style she only charges me $55 ohmy.gif cheapest girl I have ever been to and does the best job - I always give her $70, she gets a $15 tip from me. When we go out we normally tip between $5-10 depending on the service!

Hey Nichole - can I just follow you and DH around when you guys go out and be your personal waitress??? smile.gif That was awesome of you guys - I bet you made that waitresses day with that almost $80 tip!

3xsthefun replied: Ok, I feel really dumb. I have never tipped my hair dresser but then again I only go about 2-3 times a year. I didn't even know anyone tipped their hair dresser non of my family does.

Next time I go see my hair dresser I will be sure give her a tip.

mckayleesmom replied:
I need that lady

Marie_S replied: I tip waiters, waitresses, cab drivers and hairdressers. One time though the cabbie asked me if he could keep the change huh.gif which I found very weird since I hadn't even had a chance to give him a tip yet. I said sure cause aside from the fact that I felt this was rude I figured he must have needed it more than me. DP and I usually tip 15-20% depending on the service.

Kaitlin'smom replied:
me to,

I have changed from a place who did ok and cost me $150, for cut, color, style down to $80-90 with tip and does MUCH better! big savings for me thumb.gif

My2Beauties replied:
Brianne she is so awesome - if you could make it to Louisville she does an excellent job and she is soooooooo nice - I have everyone at work going to her - literally! She is so awesome! I'll give you her name and # later when I find it at home, I'll IM it to you or something. I used to nearly $125 for just highlights and they didn't do near as good a job as her! She would charge you more obviously because your hair is longer but she is still soooooooooo cheap!

mckayleesmom replied: It can't be worse then 100 for color and 170 for highlights and cut...that I use to pay.

Marie_S replied: I am sure most of the hairdressers that charge 100-200 for hair color and cut do great jobs. I on the other hand am way to cheap to spend that much on my hair. I buy hair dye at the store for the 6.49 special and do it myself at home and I usually spend 40.00 on a cut and style. Maybe when I finish school and get a decent paying job I won't mind spending a bit more on my hair, but right now my hair is tied up most of the time because Branden likes to use it as a pull toy rolleyes.gif
