Took Kylie to the doctor today
coasterqueen wrote: I took Kylie to the doctor today about her tip toe walking, eye problem, and her scalp problem. Kylie was AWESOME for the doctor, which is not the norm for her.
Doc scheduled her to see a pediatric orthopedist (sp?) regarding her tip toe walking. Our choices seem to be therapy, leg braces or surgery, but the specialist will let us know more when we go. It's not til May though.
She has a fungus growing on the top of her head and that's why her hair is not growing up there. I feel so completely bad about it because she's had this for a LONG time but I thought maybe it was just dried scalp or something and Dh thought I was being silly when I thought it was more. I'm not going to listen to him anymore, lol. But we have to use this scalp creme 2 a day for two weeks and if that doesn't work we'll see a pediatric dermatologist to get it solved so her top of her hair will grow like the rest of it.
And last but not least Kylie started blinking her eyes CONSTANTLY over the weekend which was really concerning me. She has always walked into doors, walls, anything, but I thought she was just not paying attention. The doc did some eye tests on her and the only thing he said was her eyes were not responding correctly and we need to see a pediatric optomologist (sp?). He didn't want to elaborate til we see the specialist, which will be at the end of the month. Now I get to sit here and wonder if she's going to have to wear glasses, or what.
So that's been my lovely afternoon.
ammommy replied: Oh, sorry for the rough day. Hopefully you will get some answers soon. I know my ped likes to refer to specialists for anything out of his normal realm. Maybe that's why you are being referred. As a just in case type of thing. Keep us posted!
iluvmysweetiepies replied: Sorry you had a rough day I hope you can get things figured out soon!
DansMom replied: Wow, that's a lot to take in at once. I'm glad Kylie handled the doc well.
Kirstenmumof3 replied: OMG that is a lot for you to deal with right now! I'm glad that you are getting everything taken care of right away! Don't feel badly about not taking her to get her scalp checked, who would have guessed it was a fungus! I hope all will be okay! Keeping you in my thoughts!
MommyToAshley replied: That is a lot to take in all at once, but at least you are getting answers. Don't feel bad about not getting her scalp checked, I never would have thought about a fungus either. I probably would have thought it was dry scalp as well. Don't worry sweetie, you will get it all sorted out. And, I am glad that Kylie handled it well.
I wonder if I should get Ashley's eyes checked. She started doing the same thing this past weekend, blinking them a lot. I thought maybe she had a headache or her eyes were bothering her, so I made the mistake of asking her why she was blinking ... and of course that made her blink more.
DVFlyer replied: When it rains it pours, huh. Hopefully it's nothing too serious. Good luck!
kit_kats_mom replied: Gee Whiz Karen. What a crappy appointment. I'm sorry. Luckily, none of her problems are life threatening. Hopefully they are nothing and the doc is just being careful. If they do turn out to be issues, it sounds like they are fixable. FYI, I was in braces from age two to three and I had to wear special orthopedic shoes until I was 5 due to being pidgeon toed. I only had to wear the braces to sleep and I don't recall any big trauma to my mental health...unless you count looking at my baby pictures now and seeing those ugly old shoes traumatic. LOL
coasterqueen replied: I was severely pigeon-toed as a kid. It was a very traumatic experience for me because my parents were young, couldn't afford proper care for my problem and so they just put my shoes on the wrong feet to correct them. As well as they would yell at me and get angry when I didn't walk straight.
I've tried so hard not to do that with Kylie and Dh has made me angry a time or two about it because he really thinks she can walk flat, she just doesn't want to. Anyways, I'm REALLY hoping she doesn't have to do braces. I think I'll be traumatized by it more than her of course.
A&A'smommy replied: OH Karen sounds like you had a rough app. don't feel too bad about the fungus on her head I wouldn't have guessed that either. If she has to have glasses or contacts that wont be too bad either when I was 15 I had a friend whos little brother that was Kylies age wore contacts his sister put them in it wasn't that bad. as for the braces I hope she doesn't really need them but if she does isn't it better that she gets them now... I know its hard for you I can't amagine having an app. like that and then feeling good about it.. but it will be fine and you guys will get through it better than before ((((((BIG HUGS)))))
~Roo'sMama~ replied: Wow I'm sorry you had such a crappy day! That is a lot to process at once. Like Cary said though at least the problems fixable. We have a friend who's little girl has to wear special shoes - I think the last I heard they were helping. You're right - if Kylie does end up needing braces it will probably bother you more than it does her. At least you're able to do something about it now while she's little enough for it not to bother her so much.
coasterqueen replied: Thanks ladies and you are right, at least Kylie's problems are fixable. Or at least I hope the eye problem is. I think I'm worrying for nothing on that one, but what would I be if I didn't worry.
I have actually had a long time to deal with the tip toe walking issue since she's walked that way since around a year old. We knew at that time what our options were and doc wanted us to do something about it at 18 months but we were told by so many people it would go away so we decided to wait longer to see if mother nature took it's course. We'd probably wait a bit longer if we could but since she's starting to complain about calf muscle cramps we realized it's time to do something about it. So I have had time to let it soak in.
I'm still trying to figure out how one gets a fungus on their head? The doc did say that the sore she got on her head trying to come through the birth canal is what probably started it because she's had this problem that long BUT we were told it was just an injury from trying to come out and they told us it would be fine. Guess not. It wasn't til the last 6 months that it started looking weird, but it still looks like dry skin. Oh well.
3_call_me_mama replied: Things will get better .... hugs to you...... also my cousin walke don her tiptoes from 9 months to this very day and she's 7 and has never had any problems , so maybe kylie will grow out of it or it will stop on it's own or it won't cause any problems for her.....
i might have missed this originally but is h\she having problems walking or does it just appear unusual? (the tiptoeing) .. goods luck ....
loveydad replied: Sounds like a bad appointment! that's too bad
ediep replied: oh man Karen, that stinks!!!! I'm sure you'll get it all sorted out soon, and Kylie will be fine!
My2Beauties replied: I'm sorry you had a bad day and poor Kylie My friend walked on her tiptoes until she was much much older..on into middle school and she had to just do exercises that stretched out her calf muscles for about a year and it worked for her. It was like her calf muscles were too short or something and those stretches helped elongate them, I don't quite remember that well. Don't feel bad about not taking her to the doctor, I've never heard of a fungus on someone's head I would have never thought that neither! I'm so sorry! I hope that everything works out OK! Oh yeah and as far as the eyes, my mother works for an eye doctor and Desiree has done stuff like that before and we took her in..they said that a child's eyes do not process like an adults until early in their teenage years and they do not get to full 20/20 vision until then, most of the time it's nothing! Hugs Hon!!!
Sunflower04 replied: Sorry about Kylie.
DansMom replied: Karen, I had to wear my shoes on the wrong feet to correct my pigeon toes too. Maybe we're related? My older sister actually got casts, I think she was two when she got them. Her pigeon-toed-ness was worse than mine I guess. Anyway, I hope this is something easily corrected for Kylie, whatever is going on there. Thankfully, a lot of stuff like that (casts, corrections, etc.) get forgotten later in life. Cindy doesn't remember wearing casts at all. Keep us posted!
Kaitlin'smom replied: wow what an appointment. thats alot ot take in all at once.
aspenblue1 replied: What an appoitment. I hope they get everything worked out soon.
texasp3 replied: Holy cow! All of that in one appointment! Well, you'll certainly get to know your local pediatric specialists, won't you. I guess it's a good thing you're getting the right referrals and it sounds like everything is, as you said, fixable.
I wouldn't beat yourself up over the fungus thing... skin fungus is a lot more common than people think and so freakin' hard to notice and treat properly. I bet it goes away just fine now that you're onto it. Michael had empitigo when he was 2... nasty stuff, very hard to get rid of.. I chased it all over his body! I know what you mean.. no matter how hard I tried to be rational in my approach to the situation, inside I just felt like a bad mommy!
Anyway - I'm sorry all of this dumped on you at once. I think I probably would have had a meltdown right in the doctor's office just from the sheer number of things to take care of at once! Big hugs and keep us posted on what you find out from each of the docs!
