Update on Dh and FEMA
coasterqueen wrote: Well DH just emailed me and told me he FINALLY got his FEMA contract, signed it, and sent it off to them. He goes and gets all his shots this afternoon. Course that last sentence was funny, sounds like he's a dog or something. Trying to find humor in this. They will have his travel date and destination in the next few days, but his boss is 90% sure he'll leave this Sunday. But of course he's had three "travel dates" thus far that have been postponed so we'll see. He's taking Thursday and Friday off to get things done, packed and spend time with us. I can't take off til Friday though, but oh well.
It's really real. I guess since it's been postponed a few times that I was starting to think it wasn't real, but it is. The good thing is he'll be staying in hotels, we think. The guy who left over the weekend got to stay in a hotel, now that things are a bit more settled in that area.
Oh wait! I just read in the papers this morning about Tropical Storm Rita! Ok, now I'm worried. UGHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Edit: I think the worst thing about him being gone so long is that if he gets a weekend every 30 days the way things are falling for when he leaves, etc he won't get Thanksgiving, but looks like he'll get Christmas but then he won't get New Years. We have spent every New Years together for the past 13 years. I can't imagine not spending that day with him.
amymom replied: awwwww I know it will all work out for you.
moped replied: Can I ask what he does again? I know I know but I don't remember - sounds like a sort of neat job..............
coasterqueen replied: He's actually just a boring electrical engineer. Structural, civil engineers were sent down there first, right away. He asked to go right away and FEMA originally asked for electrical engineers out of his office right away but then with the FEMA director change, and other weather/housing issues he wasn't taken right away. He has to go to training for I think Dh said 9 days to train on federal laws, protocols, etc then he'll go down there. He'll be working in federal buildings, state/city building, non-profit orgs, and then on down to smaller business owners, then possibly homes/apt buildings. That's all I know or care to figure out from DH. Electrical engineering can be very boring unless talking about robots and such.
I think the scariest thing FEMA told him he'll have to bring is a wetsuit.
Kaitlin'smom replied: I hope Rita stays away or lessons. I was wondering when he might leave. at least it looks like a hotel for him, that will be better than a tent.
SOUTHERN MOMMY replied: I'm sorry hun that he will be gone on those holidays sounds like no fun to me.
Jamison'smama replied: I hope he gets a hotel--and eventually one with internet--tell him to take a webcam just in case--I bet Kylie would love that.
Hugs to your family!!!
TANNER'S MOM replied: Hugs to Karen..and the girls.
You have really been in my thoughts. I think your family is very brave one to do this.. I will continue to think of you and yours..
Hugs!
My2Beauties replied: Your husband and you are in my thoughts and prayers! You're strong so you guys will get through this! to you hon! We are always here when you need us.
Our Lil' Family replied: Thank you very much for your sacrafice and for him helping our state rebuild!
(I assume he's coming here to LA?)
3xsthefun replied: to you! You, your hubby, and your girls will be in my thoughts.
You are a much stronger woman then I am. Your hubby and you are doing a wonderful thing!
coasterqueen replied: Naomi,
I didn't know you were from Louisianna. We aren't for sure where his destination will be. The gentleman from his office that left this past weekend went to Jackson, Mississippi. So don't know if they will send Ryan there as well or if he'll be going to LA. We should know more in the next day or two. FEMA seems to be VERY slow with things as I'm sure you know all too well.
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Karen you all are in my thoughts and I will say a special prayer for Ryan. I'm so proud of him for this. What a huge sacrifice for him to make.
Rita (as of now) is headed for the Texas coast so LA should be fine.
dolfinrse replied: to you and your family! My brother left last Monday, he volunteered through FEMA. He initially went to Atlanta for training for a week and then went to Baton Rouge. He is living in a tent with 16 other guys.
coasterqueen replied: Yikes! A tent? Well that's what they told DH would originally be staying in. We still aren't for sure because the last guy didn't get his destination til he was in training. He had train for 9 days, though. Geesh! The guy in MS is staying in a hotel. I sure hope that's what Ryan gets.
Kudos to your brother for doing this as well.
