Vanity Sizing

mammag wrote: Am I the only one who gets extremely annoyed by this? They say it's the new trend (though I've been seeing it for years) for brands. They are making all the sizes smaller so if you fit into a 6....now you'll be a 2. That's ridiculous! It makes it so hard to shop for clothes because you have to take in several pairs of every brand to figure out what's going to fit. I remember going shopping right after I had Cade and I was wearing a 10 and then I tried on some pants that were 10 and they were huge....I ended up in a 6 so I was feeling all good about myself until I went to another store and had to try the 10 again because I couldn't get the 6 on my expanded bootie! I can see how it would be a tactic that would work on some because you tend to feel better if you say you are in a 2 than a 6 but won't be long before a 6 is considered big....kwim?

I don't like it!

TANNER'S MOM replied: Well I would love to be a 6... true or not..lolol

But I do agree I think we should have universal sizing .... it drives me crazy..

I was once told that at the more expensive stores your size was always smaller..Now I don't know if that is true.

gr33n3y3z replied: yeah I hate it bc I never can buy pants on line

ammommy replied: What's really annoying is that it helps you think that you are getting skinny. It sounds odd, but as I was slowly gaining weight, I figured that I was just imagining things because I could buy the same size as before (plus all of my friends lied and told me that I looked great mad.gif ). Then I stepped on a scale and was up 15 pounds ohmy.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied: OH ya that urks me to know end I am not a small girl I know that but when you think your one size and they dont fit and you have to go up well me I DONT buy them I dont care what the price or how cute it is.

Yes the expenisive boutiques here are that way you might really be a size 10 but you can go in there and buy 6 or less. No way I am paying exrta to think I am smaller either.

okay I will stop before I really go off since I am in a bad mood

Maddie&EthansMom replied: I'm with you! I hate it! Old Navy did this last year with their jeans. smash.gif

A&A'smommy replied: OH yeah they have been doing that for years I had a friend that was size 8 (it looked good on her) and I LOVED the pants I went to try them on they literally FELL off dry.gif I wore a size four but I could wear a six if they were made right (They were still huge) so when I would go shopping I would have to be careful of that because size two was really a four.... it was annoying and its even worse now that I'm overweight dry.gif

Sarah&Mackenzie replied: I have never had that problem. Is it certain brands that do this or all of them?

luvbug00 replied: I've never heard of this before! How are you supposed to know your vanity size?

mammag replied: There is no one "vanity" size...that's the point. You don't know what the heck your size is unless you try each different brand on. For instance (now this was before kid 3 & 4) I remember I bought a size 4 in Gap once then went to Abercrombie and the 0 fit.

coasterqueen replied:
same here. cool.gif

gr33n3y3z replied:
yes all those types of stores I wear a diffrent size in

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: It's called retail marketing. People are going to buy what appears to make them thinner. It does aggravate me though because I could never buy anything online and every store I am a completely different size. But I would have to admit, I really sometimes appreciate the "trick"...it does give me a smile when I walk out of the store. And the fact that I know that they do this, never makes me question my size whether I'm up or down. It's not right anyway!! LOL!

But yep, I will agree with you when it comes to jeans...I'm a 10, I'm a 2, I'm a 6, I'm a 28, I'm a 32, I'm a short, I'm a tall, I'm a slim fit, I'm a wide leg...WTH?!

~Roo'sMama~ replied: Argh I hate it too! growl.gif It's so frustrating having to take five different sizes with you to the dressing room because you never know what that brand's sizes are like. smash.gif And it's crummy thinking you're one size and then having to wear 3 sizes bigger in a different brand. sad.gif I don't think I'd mind it so much if I were skinny again but when I'm fat clothes depress me.
