Very sad story... - I just can't believe it WARNING GRAPHIC

ilovemybaby wrote: My FILs neighbour has a cat. Well someone decided to pour acid all over it. And the owner called the SPCA (Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals) and they said it would cost $100 to have the cat put down and that they would have to pay for it. Fair enough... it is their cat. But they can't afford it and the SPCA basically told them they have changed their policy and they don't put down cats for people. The poor cat is suffering and apparently you can see inside it's eye sockets or something...

It makes me so mad. The SPCA are supposed to be there to protect animals and to see that they aren't suffering. I understand that the owners are responsible for their cat and that they should pay for it to be put down. But you would think that the SPCA would put the cat down even if the owners couldn't pay.

But then they could go to the vet and ask to pay the bill off bit by bit...

I have considered ringing our local paper and Fair Go and trying to get something done about it... but it's not really my place. The owners could do that.

It just makes me so mad and it's so sad. I was going to take some photos of the cat and send them to the local paper or Fair Go but I don't think I could handle seeing the cat.

Why do people do such horrible horrible things to animals?! Sick sick sick.

Debra replied: What the heck?! What kind of world are we living in? I just don't understand how people can perform such atrosities (sp?). Poor little kitty!

This may sounds really bad but I wonder about calling Animal Control? The ones in this area are real quick to put animals asleep. I really hope I don't sound mean. But that poor kitty is suffering & needs to be put out of its misery. Maybe Animal Control can help or atleast point them in the right directions?!

ilovemybaby replied: I never thought about Animal Control... hmmm... I thought they just dealt with dangerous animals... like dogs that are not on a leash or roming around... We have had several problems with dogs in our area and I was nearly attacked once.

Animal Control told me I had to catch this dog that was on our property if I wanted them to pick it up. Can you believe that?! So this dog was running around it's owner trying to get to me to bite me. I could have sued them if it did attack me.

Kirstenmumof3 replied: bawling.gif OMG that is just awful! Poor little kitty! I would definately call Animal Control and have your neighbour call the Police as well. That is definately animal cruelty!

ilovemybaby replied: Thanks I sort of feel like it's none of my business (it's my FILs neighbour not mine). But I will see if anything has happened since we first heard about it... it's been at least three days...

~Roo'sMama~ replied: Omg poor kitty!! sad.gif sad.gif That's so awful. mad.gif

It doesn't cost that much to get a cat put down at the vets office does it?? unsure.gif I was under the impression it was only $20 or $30 - and for sure they would do it if the cat was suffering!

luvbug00 replied: a shelter might do it for free unsure.gif

AussieMummy replied: bawling.gif That is soo sad, I dont know how someone can just do that!

b&bsmom replied: I had to put one of our cats down at the vet and it didn't cost $100. It was much less. I would also try taking it to a vet I think if that had happened to us ( God forbid) my vet would have put the cat down if we couldn't afford it. You may find a vet might be more compassionate and understanding. They might help. Good luck. It is just so sad. I will never understand why someone would do something like that. mad.gif

ilovemybaby replied: I am hoping that they have already taken it to the vet and had it put down... it shouldn't be left to suffer like that! But even so I don't think it would cost that much either... I have a feeling that the SPCA charges more than the vets do. I really don't think it cost that much when my parents had their cat put down...

The SPCA is an animal shelter... it's basically the only one in New Zealand. We don't have any other kinds of animal shelters. So if they won't help it is up to the owner to do something. I really just hope that the owner has done something by now... I mean it's been more than three days since it happened. And you would think that if they left their cat to suffer that they would be up on animal cruelty charges right?

My3LilMonkeys replied: bawling.gif The poor little furball! bawling.gif

The SPCA where I live has a policy that they will take in all unwanted animals for a donation. The amount of the donation is up to you - be it $1 or $100. They will then put down animals that are unfit to be adopted out.

I agree with the above - tell them to call around to vets. Surely there must be some out there who are not just in it for the $$ and care about the animal's well being and will do what is right.

ilovemybaby replied: You would think so huh. I mean if they had just lied and said that the cat is a stray and that they just found it like that then the SPCA would have put it down no questions asked... anyway I phoned my father in law and asked him if the cat is still alive and apparently it died within 24 hours of it happening... it died overnight. That's a huge relief to me because I couldn't stop thinking about it... I am glad to hear (even though it's really sad) that it's not suffering anymore.

My3LilMonkeys replied: ITA. It's nice to hear that the cat is no longer suffering though the whole situation is heartbreaking.

I'm just curious - how did it happen in the first place? Was it intentional?

ilovemybaby replied: Yes someone poured acid on it. They don't know who did it. But I'm guessing it was a teenager.

TLCDad replied: I'd definitely have the police called. I'm concerned why a teenager or whoever has acid like this? I know you can buy it but still that is a real concern what else they are doing with it.

And they should definitely do some jail time for this.

My2Beauties replied: Oh No I wish I hadn't even read this because that upsets me so much, I have such a soft heart for animals and children! OMG that is so awful. bawling.gif

I'm with Rod that family honestly needs to call the police, that was a criminal act and they need to be brought up on charges! mad.gif

ilovemybaby replied: I know what you're saying but they have no idea who it was. It could have been anyone from anywhere if you KWIM. It is just like when my rabbit was stolen and tortured and killed and chucked down a drain... we had no idea who did it but we called the police and the SPCA and the SPCA came out and interviewed every child in the neighbourhood but no one would admit to it so it was just a waste of time.

I think the acid must have been something readily available... like maybe that car acid stuff - sorry I don't know what it's called.

A&A'smommy replied: That is SOO SOOO awful!!! bawling.gif
