Vtech Reader

coasterqueen wrote: Anyone's kid(s) have the Vtech Reader? I was thinking of getting this for Megan for Christmas and I have a 20% off coupon for TRU so I thought about taking advantage of it. tongue.gif Do you have to buy the books for it or what? I read you can buy some of them online and I thought maybe that would be better than having the books laying around the house. blush.gif Any info appreciated thumb.gif

luvbug00 replied: i dont know. but it sounds so cool. we had the original v-tech for my and loved it! wish she was young enough to use it..lol

moped replied: Well I am not sure about that one but why not check out the Fisher Price iXL, it is a reader and many other activities............it looks cool. My freind just got me one in California for Laila, like an itouch for books, games, learning etc. Goes up to 7 years old. You do have to get cartridges for it

coasterqueen replied:
I literally just saw this on TRU's site! It does look great and for just a little bit more money, really it sounds like it has a lot more features. This may be my solution to her wanting the iPod touch, too. Because I can still put some mp3s on it! I'm going to have to check it out.

So have you played around with it yet? Tell me everything you know! Do you think a 5 year old would still like it? Megan can't read yet, loves to play with my iPhone (educational games and songs on it, etc). I love that it's a writing pad, too. Her handwriting is still VERY NEW and atrocious. laugh.gif

moped replied: I haven't got it yet, she just got home yesterday, but it looks cool and high tech. The levels are dependant on how advanced the games are that you get with it. So for Laila I got the Ni Hao Kai Lan and possibly will get her the Princess one.......I think those are the easiest so to speak.

I say do it!

This was my hope that she quits playing jacks ds and plays her own now - here's hoping!

boyohboyohboy replied: we were just looking at the v tech reader when I came across the leapfrog explorer. I think that also has a reader in it but does so much more.
I am hoping that the cartridges from the other leapfrogs fit in it and the charger work as well...but of course I am sure its going to require a whole new set of gadgets!

coasterqueen replied:
Megan has a DS. I'm just looking for something more to help her with reading -- my main concern. This kid is never gonna learn to read. She has absolutely NO desire. Kylie had so much desire to learn to read, not true with this stubborn one. I was hoping something like that would help her learn to read. I think Dh and I are going to have to take a visit to TRU and test them out. laugh.gif

youngmomofone replied: We are getting my 7 yo that for Christmas. My mom will buy the reader, and I will buy the books. I can't wait for her to have it! She's repeating first because she had trouble with reading and Math, so this will be awesome for her.

MommyToAshley replied:
I haven't seen it, but sounds interesting. But it looks like it has good reviews on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00385UQZ...ASIN=B00385UQZI

coasterqueen replied: Yeah, it has gotten good reviews from everything I've read.

I still think I'm going with the Vtech, though, the more I think about it mainly because I want her to learn to read - my sole purpose for the thing. With the other one she has too many options to do other things. laugh.gif This kid is STUBBORN! I am already getting notes from the teacher about her coloring. Megan scribbles, not colors. She says it's boring and a waste of time. wacko.gif She says she doesn't care to read either because I'll always be there to read to her. cool.gif dry.gif

holley79 replied: We have the Vtech reader and I love it. This year we are going to get Annika either the Leapster Explorer or the FP iXL. I haven't been able to figure out which one to get. UGG!

coasterqueen replied:
That's my problem! We went and looked last weekend and I don't like the FP iXL. It's between the Vtech and the Leap Frog Tag reader. The Tag reader looks easier, but I dunno. dunno.gif wacko.gif

holley79 replied:
Annika didn't get as much out of the tag reader as she did the VTech. The VTech for her was more learning like I guess you could say. The tag reader seem more of a story reader to her then a learning tool, if that makes since.

coasterqueen replied:
I can understand that. I went and looked at them again today and I just still saw the Vtech much like the leapster that Megan already has except it will read stories to you. I already have an app on my phone that will do that and like I said she already has the leapster. I did go ahead and buy her the Tag Reader. Honestly I want her to learn to read -- that's my main concern when it comes to buying these things. This child has absolutely no desire in learning anything at all when it comes to school, but she does want to be read to and she has an inkling of desire to learn to read. Albeit an inkling but it's there. This child is gonna be the death of me. tongue.gif wacko.gif So we'll see, it might be a wasted purchase, but I did get a great deal on leapfrogs website. Ha ha!
