Wal Mart - Layaway
holley79 wrote: How many of you depend on Layaway when buying stuff? I have only used it a few times but play on using layaway for Christmas this year. From what I am hearing Wal Mart is doing away with their layaway. I know TONS of people who depend on this to purchase Christmas and I wonder how many people this is going to effect. Guess all the more reason to go to KMart.
mom2my2cuties replied: It is going to be gone sometime in November.
I am kind of bummed about it. We use it every year at Christmas time - So that way we don't have to hide the gifts in the house!
mckayleesmom replied: I don't use it all the time...but I have used Layaway in the past.....They will have some ticked off people if they do away with it. I like to put some stuff on layaway early because they might be gone come xmas.
Crystalina replied: Last night I heard they are doing away with it on Dec.12th. They said that after Christmas it would be gone. Who knows?
I love layaway for Christmas although I try to get my stuff in and out pretty quickly because those layaway lines are crazy. If they do away with it I will definatley be going to the big K. I don't understand their reasoning behind it.
Crystalina replied: Ah-Ha! Last day to start is in Nov. Pick up date Dec. 8th. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060914/bs_nm/...rt_layaway_dc_2
CantWait replied: I've never put stuff on layaway, although this year could be a different story.
My3LilMonkeys replied: That is what I do....we usually start a round of shopping in Sept. and throw it on layaway...a round in Oct. and etc. I have no room to store christmas presents in my house.
kimberley replied: oh how i wish that we had K-Mart here. i don't shop at heck-mart anymore since i was treated so rudely and they did nothing about it. not to mention 3 small appliances i bought broke within 6 mos and they refused to do anything
Cece00 replied: I've thought about it but never done it...I had considered it in the past so that I could buy early to keep the stores from running out, and also so I dont have to store the presents in my house...perhaps I'll take advantage of it this year, so I dont have to fork over hundreds of dollars @ one time, and so that they dont run out of toys & stuff before the holidays that I'd like to get my kiddos.
ashtonsmama replied: I don't use it unless I really don't have the $$ and have to buy a more expensive item right then. I like making sure I pay for things then and there...usually. We got into some pretty bad debt after we got married, and we cleaned up well, and are out of debt now, but SO close to falling back in, that we're extra careful.
holley79 replied: Well I try and use layaway because instead of forking over hundreds of dollars at one time during the holidays I can put it on layaway and go pay on it each time I get paid. It doesn't seem to put such a finacial strain on us. I will have to go to KMart. Speaking of layaway I need to go get my sister's baby swing off layaway tomorrow. That was the only way I could afford her something nice.
Boo&BugsMom replied: WHAT?!?! Is this ALL Walmart's? That sucks!!!
C&K*s Mommie replied: Yep, Jennie it is ALL as far I can tell.
Crystalina replied: and you're right, it does suck. I'm soo used to putting Barbies on layaway for Christmas. If I get only a few Barbies and then a few Barbie accesories....goodness. I need layaway for Barbie alone. And sure enough every Christmas she comes out with a whole new line. Family, pets, horses, houses, cars and all.
holley79 replied: I was just talking to DH about this whole Wal Mart thing. We are just going to go to KMart. I just don't understand how they can say they are not making any money and the demad for layaway has gone down. They say everyone is turning to shopping cards, online shopping and credit cards. I find this really hard to believe when the line for layaway pick up is halfway across the parking lot. JMHO but they are probably wanting to free up the space and utilize it for something else.
Boo&BugsMom replied: My problem is that I do not know how to save money. It doesn't stay there long enough to burn a hole in my pocket, so the layaway option is great for me since I don't really need to save money in my sock drawer or anything with that option. THIS BITES!!! I wonder if they will lose a lot of busines because of it.
C&K*s Mommie replied: A friend of mine who works in Walmart in a neighboring town, said that it really does cost them more to store all of the items, thus decreasing the profit.
C&K*s Mommie replied: I would imagine that the layaway business would be transferred to other places of business- but loyal shoppers may still shop at Walmart regardless. Just not now for the layaway part of it.
I think for as many people that I hear that despise Walmart, they are still holding strong and making new ground as a superstore.
holley79 replied: Well I can understand that but I Wal Mart makes a lot of money to begin with and there are a lot of families this is going to effect.
Oh well, we win some we lose some. It's not going to hurt Wal Mart's business at all because for every person it causes to go to KMart to utilize layaway there are 10 to take their place and buy from Wal Mart. This just means the lines at KMart will be longer.
coasterqueen replied: Crap! We were going to utilize their layaway this year because things are tight and we wanted to start now. I've only used it one other time a long time ago in college.
Darn!
MoonMama replied: I honestly haven't used it much, but I think its a HUGE HUGE mistake to get rid of it! And I was somewhat thinking it would be nice as Braedin got older to use it as a way to semi hide some bigger gifts for him. However my SIL is a walmart manager and has told me she has yet to hear actual conformation on this one. So I don't know.
Here I am fairly certain kmart, target etc. doesn't do layaway so I think it could really hurt some families come Christmas time.
ataylorm replied: We have used it the last couple years. Going to Wal-Mart the day after thanksgiving, loading up, then paying for it over the next couple weeks. It allows me to get 1 or 2 more paychecks in the bank, and it helps hide the goods from the kids. I will certainly miss it this year, since you won't be able to add anything after November 19th. It will certainly mean we buy less, mostly because the items we want are generally gone after that first shopping day, and they don't get them back in.
Crystalina replied: They may not feel it during the year but I think when Christmas comes around they are bound to feel it.
mom2my2cuties replied: A lot of people also use it during the summer for school clothes...At least my parents did. We would pick out our school clothes in the late spring and early fall...To make back to school stuff easier on my parents.
