War on Terror Poll
cameragirl21 wrote: Ok, so as I mentioned in a previous post, I read quite a few news sources, some coming directly from the middle east. There is quite a bit of talk lately about Iran and the likelihood of a showdown between Iran and Israel which may or may not involve the US and possibly other western nations. Made me wonder if we are making progress on the war on terror. Not saying we aren't, I am honestly not sure what the answer is and am curious how others see it. This has nothing to do with whether or not you agree with the war on terror or if you support our wars in iraq and afghanistan. The question is simply if you think we are winning or losing the war, whose main objective is to reduce or eliminate terror in the world. Please no debates, just state your opinion and/or place your vote. BTW, if you believe we are not winning and choose to vote that way, it does NOT mean you don't support our troops or our efforts, it's a simple question of whether or not progress is being made, not about whether you agree, support our military, etc. For example, I am not fond of this war but I do have a great deal of respect and support for our troops.

my2monkeyboys replied: I think we are making progress, but as one would expect when it comes to making enormous changes that effect the world, I don't think it's necessarily a 'win' situation. I think you can win a battle, or a war against a specific country, but I think it's unfair to suggest that you can actually win when you are fighting against many groups of people in many countries. I think we are certainly making progress and that is an improvement any way you look at it. I don't agree with every decision or every move, but the people running this are humans, and will make mistakes. I think overall they are doing a good job, and certainly not a job I would want.
Crystalina replied: Ditto to worse and harmony.
msoulz replied:
Ditto.
gr33n3y3z replied: Yes we are and no one ever said war was nice and thats all I will say on that
luvbug00 replied: I have compleate respect for our toops and the sacrafices from their families.
for the war itself i agree with going after osama and his followers after 9/11. I think there is slow progress.
as for this portion no, I believe that going after sadam was all rubbish. I have no issue saying i will be the happiest person alive when the man i believe to have been our worst presidant leaves office. That's my opinion, i adore everyone regardless of your political opinions.
punkeemunkee'smom replied: I don't know if we are winning yet but I know we have made progress. (For those who don't think Hussein was a threat I ask you to read some of the acts his regime commited.) I believe that if we had gone to Iraq and Afganistan with more of a war mentality we would have been out long ago with far less casulties on our part. Lisa is right-no one ever said war was nice or pretty and that is what I think our biggest mistake has been so far.
luvbug00 replied:
yes, read it. i am not gonna tuch this further.

A&A'smommy replied: ok after hearing details from soliders over there yes we had to go over there, yes its getting better, yes its a slow progress. As for saddam please ask ANY solider who was over there during desert storm if capturing him was neccessary!
I definitely don't think Bush is the best president and I think he has messed us up pretty bad but also don't think is the worst.
My2Beauties replied: It's much much worse now and like Jeanne I'll leave it at that.
MommyToAshley replied: I didn't vote because I don't think any of us can accurately evaluate the situation without having access to classified material. I wonder how many terrorist attacks are stopped but we don't know about it due to the fact that the government keeps these things classified to protect the people invovled. We only hear about it when the attempt to stop the terrorist attack fails. Think about it... do you really believe that their have been no threats on our country since September 11, 2001?
As far as Afghanistan and Iraq... we have the means to end this "war" quickly, however it would mean killing many many innocent civilians. I am proud of our country for not taking the easy way out. However, I just watched a movie based on a true story called stopped-loss. It is horrible what these soldiers go through over there and then they are stopped from getting out after serving their time and forced to serve another term. It really brings a whole new light to what is going on over there, and I have an even greater appreciation for the sacrifices our troops and their families are making. These heroes aren't getting the treatment or respect that they deserve.
I don't have the answers, and it is easy for those of us sitting on the sidelines to second guess those making the decisions. But, I am sure that they don't take sending troops anywhere lightly (how could you and still have a conscience) so I have to believe that the things that our troops are going through are for a purpose. And, I have to believe that we have made progress considering what has NOT happened.
luvmykids replied: Well said, Dee Dee.
my2monkeyboys replied: I think you are absolutely right, Dee Dee. Both sides (the reps and dems) put out the info they want you to know when they can, but I'm positive there are tons of things we don't know. I'm sure there have been attempts on our country since 9/11, they have just been thwarted. And if for some reason there hasn't been, well that just shows that we're doing the right thing overall, bc a lot of other countries are still being attacked.
HuskerMom replied: Ditto.
Kentuckychick replied: I voted no we aren't... and I believe that terror is far worse in the world today than it ever has been in the past.
I personally hate the phrase "war on terror" -- how can it possibly be a war on terror when we go try to protect one country that has something to offer us and we ignore the 100's of others that are suffering far worse?
The war on terror will never be "won" until there is world peace... we are no where near even beginning to make a tiptoe in that direction. Too many countries (including our own) deem it necessary to own weapons of mass destruction... as long as these weapons exist ANYWHERE in the world... including right here in the United States then the potential for terrorists exists... even from our own country.
I'd like to be a dreamer and believe that someday it will all end... but we've spent trillions of dollars and ended up way in over our heads in a war that has divided our nation... I'm not naive enough to think a TRUE "war on terror" will ever occur in my lifetime.
