We have to put Buster down - Pet death mentioned

redchief wrote: Our bunny Buster didn't eat last night and was very weak this morning, so we took him to the vets. They called a little while ago and said he has cancer in his belly. We're taking the kids up to the hospital to say good-bye to their bunny buddy.

It's been a rough day in our house. sad.gif

redchief replied:
Buster was one of the results of a 7th grade science project that my eldest son's class did on genetics back in 1997. His mother was a Giant New Zealand flop-eared domestic and his father was a standard domestic. The project was to see if any flop eared bunnies would result. None did, but Buster had HUGE ears... there are pix of him somewhere on this board. We were Easter Vacation sitting Buster's mother when she gave birth in my bedroom. Buster was the runt, but out-grew all of his siblings. His adult weight was 11-12 pounds, which is very large for a rabbit. He also outlived them all at almost 11 years of age. This was his only home, and as destructive as he was at times, and as ornery as he was, too, he will be sadly missed, especially by the kids.

Thank you all for your support. smile.gif

redchief replied:
Thank you to everyone. Your support is overwhelming and we are touched by your generosity.

To Jeanne:
We've decided not to take his body home for burial. Our yard is small and most of it is used for parking space (one of the drawbacks of living at a seashore resort is you only get a little tiny piece of the island). We had him cremated and his ashes will be spread in the woods. I think that a post-life of freedom and carefree fun in the forest is fitting for him. We had his paw prints taken and each of the kids have taken a small memento of his life with us.

The kids took it really hard, but fortunately they're all old enough to understand that to allow him to suffer after such a happy and carefree life would be cruel. Buster has been with us since they were all little guys, so his loss is especially hard on them. Each of the kids got to spend a little time with him last night to say good-bye and hold fast his memory. The people at the animal hospital were incredibly nice and understanding. We chose not to stay to witness his death, but I stayed behind long enough to ensure that he would feel nothing of what was to come. I'm confident that what we did was the only humane thing to do under the circumstances, so it makes the loss easier knowing that we did all we could for him.

Again, I thank you all for sharing this with us, and for your hugs, prayers and well-wishes. Your friendship means so much I can't describe our feelings in better terms even though what I've said doesn't come close to our thankfulness.
