Weaning from bottle/sippy cup - How old?

My3LilMonkeys wrote: How old were your kids when you weaned from the bottle (if they took bottles)?

Madison is 11 month old and we have been slowly weaning her from the bottle. She didn't have a bottle at all today and is doing just fine, but I have been hesitant to get rid of them. I'm not sure if she'll regress or not because we didn't wean Brooke this young - she was over a year.

And how old when they stopped using sippy cups?

Brooke has been using a regular cup exclusively at home for 6 months or more, but MIL and SIL both still give her sippy cups. Yes, she spills, but it's all a part of the learning process IMO. MIL thinks that she is too young for a regular cup and that's why she spills.

I'm just curious to see how everyone else did things...

ETA: Brooke has a cup with a lid and a straw that she uses for car rides though.

luvmykids replied: Macie is 2 and still uses a sippy cup, the twins are 4 and would like to still use one but instead use a leak proof cup with straw or dixie cup.

C&K*s Mommie replied: WTG to Madison for having done well without the bottle at all yesterday. thumb.gif

Christian was taken off the bottle at 12mos, she decided she no longer wanted it then. Kellie, we never had success with formula feeding, so pretty early on, she had the bottle from maybe wk2 to wk 3 or 4 off and on, until we took her off completely.

Sippy cups were never used with Christian as a young child much. She took right away to straws & drinking from regular cups early on. With Kellie it was straws, and sippy cups & regular cups too, off and on, or sportscups with the straw that pops out. On occassion we would use sippy cups (like the disposable Nubys) or anything spillproof to prevent spills and thus slips on the floor. Now they are pretty consistent with Silly Sippers, which hold 16oz of fluid that will last them all day, and then some with the juice.

punkeemunkee'smom replied: We never did sippy cups. We were in the mall one day when she was about 6 months old she was reaching for my cup of water and I gave her the straw she drank and whenever she was just thirsty from then on she drank from a cup with a straw. I bought several of those spill proof cups with the flexable straws so she would not poke her mouth and of course we held it for her until she was bigger. happy.gif It was funny to see people look at her cuz she was pretty tiny drinking from a cup! laugh.gif

my2monkeyboys replied: Will had his bottle until he was 11 months old... then we just took it one day. He never complained about it, so it worked out well for us. Hid doctor had told me that if you wean them before a year old, it's much easier for them. Don't know if that's true for all kids, but it was for Will at least. LOL
As for sippy cups, he started drinking out of those when he was about 7-8 months old. I used those since he was used to sucking from a bottle... it made the transition easier I think. He used those until he was about 2 1/2 or maybe a little older. Now he uses regular cups (unless we're out somewhere, then it's a cup with a lid/straw).
I hope this helps.
Way to go on her first day without the bottle!!! They grow up so fast! sad.gif

na81 replied: My daughter went from bottle to cup at about 9-10 months. She would have rather drank from a straw than sippy, but did both. She is now 17 months and still drinks from both. We have been trying the regular cup thing and she does good, but still has spills, so when we go somewhere we us a cup with a lid! The Health Dept. told me that by 16 months you should limit sippy cups to meal times only- I don't go by that, when she's thirsty she lets me know!!

Makenzi'sMom replied: Man you guys are awesome. My daughter is 2.5 and she still has one for Naps and bedtime. How do I get rid of it now she is SO MUCH OLDER than everyone elses kids?

Thanks

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: We took the bottles away right around Wil's first birthday. I went cold turkey and he never seemed to mind. At 19 months, he still uses a sippy cup, but I try and encourage him to drink from a regular cup sometimes. He can do it, but the fluid usually goes all over his shirt! tongue.gif He's good with a straw too.

booey2 replied: Well I might in the minority here, Matthew got rid of his bottle when he was around 3.5years - he only had one at night time. Thomas got rid of his around the same age, again it was only a night time bottle. I didn't have anywhere to ask these questions when I had Matthew so I thought I was doing the right thing and with Thomas - well I just didn't have the heart or courage to take it from him cold turkey. I don't know if that came from the guilt of not being able to BF, I felt that I didn't want to deny them the one thing that was a comfort to them. Neither boys were attached to anything else, like blankets, toys or paci's so I felt what harm could a bottle do.

Good job to all who weaned early. thumb.gif

3xsthefun replied: Maegan still uses her sippy cup.

AlexsPajamaMama replied: Alex was 10 or 11 monthes old when we just stopped giving him a bottle and used only a sippy.

~~*Missi*~~ replied: american academy of peds. says no later then 18months for a bottle.... i started at 11 months and we took ALL bottles from her at 14-15months.
We left the morning one for last because that was her comfort one, most kids its the night one... but she did great. She cried the first few times we were out and saw another baby with a bottle but she got over it. Now she doesn't even think twice about it!

The sippy cup we will use for a long time I don't want juice milk etc... spilt on my floor. When out at a restaurant she uses a cup and straw. When we have meals she just uses a cup with our supervision. During the day to have out and about its a sippy cup because of the mess....i love the toss and serve ones that you can get...
Good luck.
