What a disgrace! - Laughing about Gustav????

mammag wrote: Short Video

growl.gif I don't care what side of the aisle you're on..... anyone would find this disgraceful!

Continued Prayers for those in the path of Gustav!

mckayleesmom replied: Rude

luvmykids replied: ohmy.gif ohmy.gif ohmy.gif

redchief replied: I wonder how anyone could find humor in that. I'm sure he's going to shrug it off saying that it was the timing he was laughing at. I'm also sure he's a lousy human being. I don't care what side of the political fence he sits on; nothing about Gustav should incite laughter of any kind. Boo Don Fouler! mad.gif

Edited to note that within 35 minutes of this post, the Associated Press reported that Don Fowler apologized:

mammag replied: He also said....

He laughs about a hurricane and the guy taping him is a nutcas??? Ha!

BAC'sMom replied: What a jerk! huh.gif

cameragirl21 replied: I hope you guys cried foul this much when Jerry Falwell claimed that 911 happened because of abortions and homosexuals...!
As most of you know, I live in Miami, FL...walking distance to the water and unlike most people here I've been through many hurricanes. I've had my personal belongings destroyed, have seen enormous trees uprooted, cars thrown around and entire homes destroyed. I've heard people tell stories of praying for God to kill them quickly because they were so scared. I've lived without power for over a week, stood in line to get gas, lived without food other than potato chips and cold canned soup and screamed when big pieces of tree fell so hard on my roof that sawdust was coming down to the floor. I've grabbed my belongings and fled more than once, praying that there is something to return to when the storm is over so don't think I take hurricanes lightly, most of you have no idea what living through a hurricane is.
However, let's be real, he was not laughing at the hurricane, he was poking fun at certain parts of the repub party claiming that God is on their side...apparently not this time, that's all he was saying. None of us knows what God wants and yeah, it's somewhat amusing to hear certain people claiming that God is on their side and then see God crashing their little party. I don't think he meant any harm and I think everyone here knows it and btw, I think what Jerry Falwell said about 911 is countless times worse.
And btw, yeah, it is rude and wrong to tape someone's private conversation...I'm sure we've all said distasteful things in private and thought they were just that, private. I think he had every right to cry foul that someone had the nerve not only to listen in but to tape him without permission, now that's a disgrace in the most textbook sense.
ETA--we were lucky to miss Gustav here and only get a small amount of Fay's wrath and I wanted to wish everyone in Gustav's path good luck, be safe and God speed. No matter what I may think of the RNC, I certainly wouldn't wish anyone any harm due to a hurricane (or anything else) and I'm sure neither would Dan Fowler or anyone else with a conscience. So if you're in Gustav's path, stay safe and be well. I just don't appreciate when people take someone's private comments to be anything more than what they are and if you take your emotions out of it and listen to the convo again, you'll see there's nothing sinister there, just someone poking fun at the other party's usual holier than thou rhetoric....

luvmykids replied:

Sorry, I don't know it, and regardless of the context it's inappropriate, imo. And I don't consider a commercial airliner a place of great privacy....talking across the aisle to someone doesn't sound to me like he was too concerned about being overheard, it's just a pathetic way to back peddle.

mammag replied: You know what, I detest extremists that spout this crap on either side. Jerry Falwell was a fool for what he said. The idea of anyone defending Fowler.....well, I don't even know what to say to that.... unsure.gif dunno.gif Do you have a defense for Michael Moore as well??

cameragirl21 replied: Monica, I don't disagree that what he said was not in the best of taste but I think it's being blown WAY out of proportion. He just hit republicans right where it hurts, maybe next time they'll think twice before insisting God is on their side.
And mammaq, I am not a fan of Michael Moore by any means but he is entitled to his opinion just like you and me. I don't approve of his going to Cuba illegally but I don't approve of the Cuban embargo either, it just starves Cubans, doesn't harm the government and hasn't changed anything in Cuba for the better. If Michael Moore wants to make anti-Bush style movies, that is his right, just as you can spout off about Dan Fowler and make his simple comment into some horrific crime. Free speech applies to everyone equally whether we choose to make box office style movies or post movies filmed by others on the internet.
Btw, I'd consider someone like Sarah Palin who wants to push her views onto others to be pretty extremist...on the same level as Michael Moore just in the opposite direction. The only difference between her and him is that she hasn't tried her hand at movie making yet and he hasn't tried his hand at politics yet (as far as I know anyway).

mammag replied: I'm referring to Michael Moore's latest statement.....
“I was just thinking, this Gustav is proof that there is a God in heaven,” Moore said. “To just have it planned at the same time, that it would actually be on its way to New Orleans for Day One of the Republican convention, up in the Twin Cities, at the top of the Mississippi River.”
Yes he has the right to say it.....and I have the right to think he is a classless sleezebag.

Most Republicans do not think "God is on their side". We may feel that biblically our views are what God would want but never would we suggest that we are in any way more valuable in God's eyes than Democrats. He's not just hitting Republicans where it hurts.... he's hitting humanity where it hurts.

And no Sarah Palin is no where near like Michael Moore. I could go on and on about what a disgusting person he is but it's late and he doesn't deserve any more of my time.

cameragirl21 replied: Well, I had no idea Michael Moore said that and I've always thought he was an a-hole and yes that was an asinine thing to say but yes he has the right to say it. I thought you were referring to the movies he made and breaking the Cuban embargo to make one of them.
Anywho, to me, Palin is yet another extremist who would bring this country backwards, not forward. I did some reading on Olympia Snowe and am just astounded that McCain did not pick her, she for sure would get the Hillary voters and would essentially guarantee McCain the presidency while Palin pretty much hands it over to Obama.
Wonder if McCain can still change his mind...? I'm ready to write to him and ask him to choose Olympia Snowe instead.

luvmykids replied:
Last I checked, Falwell wasn't the official Republican spokesman.

cameragirl21 replied:
Respectfully, Monica, and I do like and respect you, methinks the lady doth protest too much. Could there be some truth in Fowler's words that have everyone all upset? Maybe God doesn't like the McCain Palin combo too much, eh? Or maybe God doesn't care and Fowler found some humor in sticking it to repubs which if this board is any indication, he truly succeeded.
Falwell may not be the official spokesperson but he tended to make his obnoxious comments public while Fowler thought he was having a private convo. More private things happen in planes, you know, and people don't expect to be taped by buttinskis. I don't think Fowler owed anyone an apology, he was having a private conversation and someone chose to tape it without permission. If I were Fowler, I might be inclined to think that the only thing I owe anyone is a nice kick to the face to the guy who did the taping. Now that would be richly deserved.

redchief replied: Perhaps he'll get that opportunity in the afterlife. Somehow I doubt it'll work out that way, though. tongue.gif

luvmykids replied:
Nope, he's as assinine as Falwell, no better.

cameragirl21 replied:
fine, so he is. why are you and others here getting all bent out of shape about it? he didn't say he was wishing anyone dead or any harm to anyone, just chuckling at the unexpected turn of events. here in miami, we refer to a hurricane as "an act of God" so Fowler was just using some good ole' Jerry Falwell style humor. maybe repubs don't like the taste of their own medicine?
personally, I don't care either way, Fowler said what he said and the hurricane is going where it's going. I think McCain made a bad choice and everyone knows it and that is the real reason some people are lashing out. Don't blame those bad decisions on our side, we are just as shocked (and some of us downright disappointed) as you are.
Btw, just to be fair, don't you think it's worse to blame an event where thousands of innocent people were killed by a group of human beings with no conscience on abortions and people who were born gay and didn't choose to be that way than just chuckle over the alleged path of a hurricane (believe me, no one knows for sure where it will hit till it hits, we've had several mistaken predictions here) and the resultant cutting short of the RNC? Would you really say these two things are the same?! I'm quite certain that if (God forbid) thousands of people were killed by Gustav during the RNC unexpectedly that Fowler would not be laughing. Maybe Michael Moore would but I never denied he's an a-hole. Now THAT is a person worthy of Jerry Falwell.

luvmykids replied:
I'm not disappointed, I'll go on record as saying I like her and am pleased with that choice. Whatever that makes me in your mind doesn't bother me a bit.

I'm done with these topics, I'm not buying the "I'm open to hear what others think" when you're trying to put words in my mouth with statements like the ones I quoted.

cameragirl21 replied: you know what, I had a response to this but I erased it, I'm just going to let it go, it's not worth it.
I'm sorry if I made you mad, Monica, I did not mean to.

jcc64 replied: Who is this guy? Is he just some random guy or is he famous in some way? I've never heard of him...
I did hear the Michael Moore quote, and I have to admit, I cringed when he said it.
I wonder who's taped some of the things I've said on an airplane...

cameragirl21 replied:
Don Fowler was the DNC chairman for a short stint in the 90s...nowadays, he's no one important, really.

luvmykids replied: Thanks Jennifer, same to you hug.gif

Hillbilly Housewife replied: I really try to stay out of USA's political debating stuff, because I could really care less (no offense) who wins, as far as I'm concerned ALL politicians are.. well.. anyways.

The comment I agree with here, is:

Now I'm all for freedom of speech and all that crap - but (at least in Canada...) there are reasons for wiretap laws. There are reasons why recorded conversations are inadmissible in court, as evidence. There are reasons why most telemarketing companies and other big corp companies have a disclamier message of "this phone call may be recorded for quality of service yadda yadda...." quality of service? more like covering-of-butt.

Sure, it was a jerky thing to say, and he's an idiot for thinking he was clear to say it, in private. it doesn't change that someone recorded it without permission, and broadcasted it, without permission. We're all entitled to our private thoughts, we're all entitled to share them with who we wish - but it does NOT give others the right to share them with everyone else. it's like in elementary school, when there's a secret going around, and someone tells the secret... everyone's mad at the one who told the secret. This guy's the secret teller. He's as much, if not more, of an idiot than the other guy. yeah, sure, that Folwer guy was a twit for having expressed the sentiment in the first place, considering he's in the "spotlight"... but puh-lease. They're BOTH equally accountable for the smelly substance blown by the fan.

I'd sue the guy who recorded it. Hot coffee...

ETA - Note that i posted this before viewing the video.. i'm going to do that now, and see if I have to take my big fat foot out of my mouth... blush.gif

ETA - just watched it, the guy's an idiot, but maybe he was laughing at the irony. Anyway.. wth was the guy doing recording, anyway? fowler was shuffling papers and had what looked like tape from blood tests on his hand.. was he trying to video the documents? the injury? Idiots, both of them, either way.

Cece00 replied:
anyone who would make light of a hurricane like that or ANY mnatural disaster or say thinks like god made it happen bc of the rnc or that maybe god doesnt like the repub nominees is worse than disgraceful.

that is just disgusting, frankly.

i happen to be living this nightmare of gustav right now and i am ashamed of anyone who would say anything even remotely disgraceful like that...jennifer if youve been thru hurricanes, u should be esp ashamed of yourself for saying maybe god doesnt like their "combo"

please.

fowler owes everyone in america an apology for being a disgusting human being. you dont have a right to privacy in a public place and hes just trying to make himself not look like the pathetic excuse for a man he is which he is failing miserably.

i sure dont see him in haiti or jamaica or even louisiana right now helping ANYONE suffering from this hurricane he thinks is so funny...a hurricane that both dems and repubs and INNOCENT children are trying to cope with right now

i am truly truly disgusted by the manner in whic some ppl conduct themselves.

Calimama replied: That's sick. dry.gif

lisar replied: Well after reading all the replies all I have to say is:

This got blown out of proportion didn't it. But I learned something from the all that I didnt know. I had no idea who any of those people yall were talking about were. Now I do.

TANNER'S MOM replied: Maybe God doesn't like the McCain Palin combo too much, eh?

Now that was just a rude statement. I guess that's like saying God didn't like the Iraqi's very much when we dropped bombs on them. See how rude and politically incorrect that is.

And since when did any rational person believe that God and politics have anything to do with each other?

Jennifer, is it just me or do you ask all these religious questions in different post, tell us that you are Jewish, and then kind of also say you don't really have a religious stand point in God, to turn around and make everything you agree with and we don't about God. Is that your way of making fun of us or God or both?

jcc64 replied:

You are a very wise woman, Mel. hug.gif

cameragirl21 replied: Mel, I'm afraid I don't understand your question. I didn't make anything about God, God was brought up by the OP in the form of posting a video in which God was mentioned. My point, which I see was lost on some is that this was just a jab at Jerry Falwell for saying that God gave us 911 as a result of abortions and homosexuals and pointed out that I hope everyone here who is all indignant about what Fowler said was equally indignant about what Falwell said. I'm a firm believer in what's good for the goose also being good for the gander...I don't care for hypocrisy one bit.
not sure what my being Jewish has to do with this, you brought it up, not me.

BAC'sMom replied: Jennifer- how long have you lived in Miami?

Crystalina replied: Are you all really arguing over who God likes and who he doesn't? Over what some nimrod says about God interrupting the Rep. convention? I doubt God gives a ca-ca about politics down here on earth. He has other things to do I'm sure. rolleyes.gif

I could only smile at this thread because really...It doesn't take much to get us all worked up on this board does it? emlaugh.gif
