What can you give a newborn for - constipation?

My Sil just phoned me and asked what she can give her little guy for constipation... (he's on formula) --and I can't remember what I used for that wacko.gif

TIA smile.gif

coasterqueen replied: LOL! I was wondering wink.gif.

Mylicon drops work well. Maybe she needs to switch to a different formula too (??).

chloe&tysmommy replied:
Thanks I will mention that....she said he went last night but it was a little hard and he still never went this morning so.....?

amynicole21 replied: I would definitely recommend that she switch formulas... that's not normal for newborns. Not sure what she can use? huh.gif I've heard of people inserting rectal thermometers with vaseline to loosen things up a bit. Not sure if a ped would recommend that or not. dunno.gif

coasterqueen replied: Maybe there's too much iron in the formula? dunno.gif I'm clueless when it comes to the stuff, lol.

alice&arik replied: Arik was a little constipated when he was a newborn. I gave him a little sugar water in a bottle and it worked. Some of my friends had recommended that.

chloe&tysmommy replied: Thanks guys!!

I will mention this to her... thumb.gif

coasterqueen replied:
You have to be very careful with doing that because the skin in their rectum is very very thin and if you push to hard or in the wrong direction it can tear it. sad.gif

maliksmommy replied: We used to put a tiny bit of prune juice in with his formula and that would help. But be careful not to use too much. I think we put in about 1/2 tsp.

momof2girls replied: I went thru this with both babies, you give them equal parts of prune juice with water so like one ounce water, one ounce prune juice, if you warm it a lil it seems to help quicker!

lsjulee replied: Do you all think prune juice would be too much for the baby? I gave my elder one prune juice when she constipated.

coasterqueen replied: IMO prune juice is too much for a tiny baby like that, but then again I've never tried it wink.gif.

jem0622 replied: I would just try sugar water.

Hope it clears up. But do tell her that the ped won't consider the baby constipated unless he or she has gone 7 whole days without pooping. Not all babies poop daily!

momof2girls replied: I used prune juice and water with both babies, it always helped them without giving them diarrhea.

Cay replied: When I was forced to stop breastfeeding and had to put my infant onto formula she got very constipated - it was recommended by my mid wife that I add a t/spoon of dark brown sugar to her formula for a few feeds and it worked.

Guest_micah replied: I took a infant massage class & learned a massage that can help constipation. Lay baby on tummy, no diaper. Right where the crack of the butt begins, take your thumb & gently, but firmly massage outward onto the butt cheek from the butt crack. Do that on both sides. It may sound crazy, but I've tried it a couple
times & Levi went to town with "tooting", which relieved a lot of gas.
