What cleaning products do you use?
MoonMama wrote: think I need some new products to use. I use bleach on a LOT of things but not everything of course. So I was wondering what do you all use for certain things?
What do you use on:
The kids toys floors (non carpeted) stove microwave bathrooms (toilets, bathtub, counters, etc.) other hard surfaces in the kids rooms
Do you use anything instead of dusting or once a week/month besides dusting, or do you just dust?
What do you use to freshen up a rooms?
And anything you can think. TIA
luvmykids replied: I go through spurts...
I use bleach in the bathrooms. I use vinegar and water with a drop of dish soap on my tile floors in the living room, bleach on the floors in the kitchen and bathrooms. I use swiffers in between.
Sometimes I get on a Pin-Sol or Mr Clean kick and use it for everything.
Microwave I just use half a lemon in a bowl of water, turn on the micro for a minute, and wipe out. Stove I use Easy Off glass top cleanser.
I only dust with Pledge once every few weeks, use a feather duster in between.
And to freshen up a room, I open the windows and/or use the Febreeze air stuff.
I also wax my sinks and shower walls (not the floor!) with car wax (which is only necessary once in a while). Helps my hard water bead off and keeps stains from setting in.
For toys and some other hard surfaces, you can use a vinegar and water mixture. Vinegar kills most types of bacteria and although it stinks while you use it, it dries odorless.
Our Lil' Family replied: What do you use on:
The kids toys CLOROX WIPES floors (non carpeted) BLEACH AND HOT WATER OR MR CLEAN/LYSOL (I don't have wood, just ceramic tile) stove 409 OR LYSOL SPRAY microwave SAME AS ABOVE bathrooms (toilets, bathtub, counters, etc.) CLOROX WIPES AND COMET
Do you use anything instead of dusting or once a week/month besides dusting, or do you just dust? I DUST WITH PLEDGE WIPES
MoonMama replied: Hey I never knew that. Thanks so much Monica! You learn something new everyday.
cameragirl21 replied: you are a Virgo, aren't you, Monica?
luvmykids replied: Yes, how did what I clean with give it away? Was it the wax? I didn't come up with that myself, that was a tip from flylady.
Twelve Volt Man replied: Your birthday is listed on your profile. That'd be my guess.
cameragirl21 replied: it's the thoroughness with which you clean, it's very Virgo.
Jamison'smama replied: What do you use on:
The kids toys--either Lysol wipes (or store brand), if they are plastic and can go in the dishwasher, they go in there, I also put some things in the washing machine.
floors (non carpeted)--Armstrong Floor Cleaner or Method Lemon Floor cleaner
Stove and kitchen counters---Lysol Antibacterial Kitchen Cleaner (I am brand loyal here)
Microwave--Lemon Juice and hot water microwaved
Bathrooms (toilets, bathtub, counters, etc.)--Toilets, anything with bleach--typically Lysol toilet bowl cleaner, bathtub is softscrub and Tylex, counters and sinks are window cleaner.
other hard surfaces--I have the Method brand general cleaner for the kid's rooms since it is more natural.
Do you use anything instead of dusting or once a week/month besides dusting, or do you just dust?----I dust at least once per week--either with pledge, Method dusting wipes or the Swiffer Duster. I oil the antiques once or twice a month with Pledge Orange Oil.
What do you use to freshen up a rooms?--I open windows on a cool day, I also light the Glade Oil Candles all the time. I also vacuum the carpet constantly--the rooms always feel fresher with clean carpet
Other...we steam clean our carpets once every 2-3 weeks with our Steam Vac and I love our Floor Mate for the kitchen and bathrooms.
luvmykids replied: Oh no, you misunderstood.....Although those are the things I use when I clean, I don't actually do it very often j/k, when I do clean, I am very thorough. But lately my cleaning habits have been very un-Vigo Come to think of it, I have been very un-Virgo lately
cameragirl21 replied: idk, Monica, i seem to recall your sweet son saying that you think it's fun to clean the house because you do it all the time. when the little ones notice, you know you're a Virgoesque cleaner....
luvmykids replied: He only assumes it's because I think it's fun in reality a large part of the frequency is his doing. But over the summer we have really slacked off.
Anyhoo, glad to know I at least do a decent imitation of a good little Virgo
Cece00 replied: What do you use on:
The kids toys- fabric toys go in the washing machine, I use either a bleach solution or bleach wipes for hard toys, OR put them in the dishwasher if I can, to save myself some work
floors (non carpeted)- For my wood floors (real wood), I sweep and then use a very very very VERY wrung out mop (so its barely wet...) to clean them a couple of times over. For my mexican tile, I sweep and will mop with lots of water and just a touch of cleaner (lysol, pine-sol, etc) and then mop again with just water, and I swiffer in between because its sort of a hassel to actually mop, which I only do every couple of days to once a week
stove- Counter cleanser (like lysol spray, etc), spray, let sit 5 min, wipe clean, then I wipe with water
microwave- see above
bathrooms (toilets, bathtub, counters, etc.)- For toilets I use the clorox toilet cleaner, they make a heavy duty one that I buy...for counters I use scrubbing bubbles, and for the showers I use a bleach based spray and then also one for soap scum to make sure I get everything off, and then scrubbing bubbles for the glass door, and then I sweep and mop with the same solution I use to mop my mexican tile
other hard surfaces- usually an all purpose spray
in the kids rooms- well, they have carpets, so I vacuum or steam clean those (I probably only steam clean once every 1-2 months), dust with swiffer dusters and change sheets...I dont use any spray in those
Do you use anything instead of dusting or once a week/month besides dusting, or do you just dust? I use swiffer dusters and occasionally pledge with a cloth
What do you use to freshen up a rooms? Open the windows when its not super hot, febreeze, and I just got this oil warmer & 3 types of oil the other day & they smell AMAZING.
MoonMama replied: Thanks everyone! Its much appreciated.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: The kids toys - water in the tub with a bit of bleach
floors (non carpeted) - natural orange oil wood cleaner (hardwood floors) - water, vinegar (linoleum in kitchen)
stove - self cleaning, i run in about once a month depending on the spills in it
microwave - water, vinegar and peroxide mix
bathrooms (toilets, bathtub, counters, etc.) - water, vinegar and peroxide mix
other hard surfaces - water, vinegar, peroxide mix
in the kids rooms - water, vinegar, peroxide mix. If I need to mop the floors, I will just use the swiffer wet jet, since it's laminate.
Do you use anything instead of dusting or once a week/month besides dusting, or do you just dust?
I just dust. I mean...even if I use dust repellent, the dust will still have to settle somewhere. I do polish my wood furniture with orange oil though, now and then.
What do you use to freshen up a rooms?
Dried citrus peels in a little crochet packet I make, pot pourri that I make (not the old lady smelling type... lol) and those cheap air freshener sprays from the dollar store, smell like mangoes and strawberries etc...
Peroxide is a miracle liquid. Disinfects as well as Bleach, but not nearly as harmful.
cameragirl21 replied: would you share the recipe for this water, vinegar and peroxide mix? do you use just regular hydrogen peroxide, like the kind you can put on a cut or scrape? i've heard that mixing baking soda and vinegar is good too but idk the recipe on that or how thick it should be. i'd love to get rid of all the chemical cleaners i use but idk what the lady that comes to clean my house would think if i offered her something homemade, but i figure if it works she should be ok with it....
Hillbilly Housewife replied: Sure, no problem.
I personally mix peroxide in with water in a used windex bottle at about 2\3 water and 1\3 peroxide, wiht a few tablespoons of vinegar beacuse I like the smell of freshly cleaned with vinegar... but you can use it pure. I just find it lasts longer when I mix it with water, obviously, and it doesn't reduce the effectiveness. I also use microfiber cloths to clean.
And no, I do not use peroxide on the fruits and veggies or meat etc that I use when I can stuff.
ETA: the following is from online websites, not from me.
****** Hydrogen peroxide is the only germicidal agent composed only of water and oxygen. Like ozone, it kills disease organisms by oxidation! Hydrogen peroxide is considered the worlds safest all natural effective surface sanitizer. It kills microorganisms by oxidizing them, which can be best described as a controlled burning process. When hydrogen peroxide reacts with organic material it breaks down into oxygen and water.
Toothbrush: Soak your toothbrush in 3% hydrogen peroxide between brushings to kill bacteria and stop the passing of sickness to family members
Shower: Keep a spray bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide in the shower for spraying down the shower to kill bacteria bugs and viruses
In the dish wash/rinse water: Add 2 ounces (or more) of 3% hydrogen peroxide to the regular washing formula to safely sanitize and eliminate the tranmission of colds and diseases.
Washing meat: Use salt and 3% hydrogen peroxide in chilled water for washing fish, chicken or other meat to kill bacteria and viruses.
Cleansing for vegetables and salad greens: Add salt in addition to 1/4 cup 3% hydrogen peroxide to a sink full of cold water. Wash vegetables thoroughly, rinse with cold water and drain. This process prolongs freshness.
Leftover tossed salad: Spray with a solution of 1/2 cup water and 1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide. Drain, cover and refrigerate. Eliminates use of chemical preservatives.
Marinade: Place meat, fish or poultry in a casserole (avoid using aluminum pans). Cover with a diluted solution of 3% hydrogen peroxide. Place in a loosely covered container in refrigerator for 1/2 hour. Rinse and cook.
To freshen kitchen: Keep a spray bottle of 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide in the kitchen. Use to wipe off counter tops and appliances. It will disinfect and give the kitchen a clean, fresh small. Works great in the refrigerator and lunch boxes.
Humidifiers & steamers: Use 1 pint of 3% hydrogen peroxide to a gallon of water. This helps keep them clean too.
Laundry: Add 8 ounces of 3% hydrogen peroxide to your wash in place of bleaches.
Pets: For small animals (dogs and cats) use 1 ounce 3% hydrogen peroxide to 1 quart water for their drinking water and bath.
House & Garden Plants: Put 1 ounce 3% hydrogen peroxide in 1-quart water. Water or mist plants with this solution.
Sprouting needs: Add 1 ounce 3% hydrogen peroxide to one pint of water and soak the seeds overnight. Add the same amount of hydrogen peroxide each time you rinse the seeds.
1. Take one capful (the little white cap that comes with the bottle) and hold in your mouth for 10 minutes daily, then spit it out. (I do it when I bathe ) No more canker sores and your teeth will be whiter without expensive pastes use it instead of mouthwash.
2. Let your toothbrushes soak in a cup of peroxide to keep them free of germs.
3. Clean your counters, table tops with peroxide to kill germs and leave a fresh smell. Simply put a little on your dishrag when you wipe, or spray it on the counters.
4. After rinsing off your wooden cutting board, pour peroxide on it to kill salmonella and other bacteria.
5. I had fungus on my feet for years - until I sprayed a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water on them (especially the toes) every night and let dry.
6. Soak any infections or cuts in 3% peroxide for five to ten minutes several times a day.
7. Fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water and keep it in every bathroom to disinfect without harming your septic system like bleach or most other disinfectants will.
8. Tilt your head back and spray into nostrils with your 50/50 mixture whenever you have a cold, plugged sinus. It will bubble and help to kill the bacteria. Hold for a few minutes then blow your nose into tissue.
9. If you have a terrible toothache and can not get to a dentist right away, put a capful of 3% peroxide into your mouth and hold it for ten minutes several times a day. The pain will lessen greatly.
10. And of course, if you like a natural look to your hair, spray the 50/50 solution on your wet hair after a shower and comb it through. You will not have the peroxide burnt blonde hair like the hair dye packages, but more natural highlights if your hair is a light brown, faddish, or dirty blonde. It also lightens gradually so it's not a drastic change.
11. Put half a bottle of peroxide in your bath to help rid boils, fungus, or other skin infections.
12. You can also add a cup of peroxide instead of bleach to a load of whites in your laundry to whiten them. If there is blood on clothing, pour directly on the soiled spot. Let it sit for a minute, then rub it and rinse with cold water. Repeat if necessary.
13. I use peroxide to clean my mirrors with, there is no smearing, which is why I love it so much for this.
cameragirl21 replied: thanks, Rocky, i will try this for sure.
momofone replied: Anybody have any tips on a nonscrubbing way to clean inside the toilet bowl? Thank you.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: If you scrub it once - then just swish the brush around it every night, you'll never have to scrub it again.
luvmykids replied: Do you mean like rust stains, etc? There are heavy duty cleaners, I think one is called the Works that gets everything off. I've also heard of sprinkling baking soda, letting it sit, then pouring peroxide on it.
MoonMama replied: Thanks Rocky I had no idea.
Thanks everyone.
I got some Clorox wipes today so far I am loving them (now if I could just get the will to clean more then the kitchen counter).
