What could it be?

3xsthefun wrote: Ok, Maegan is saying her head hurts and she won't hardly drink or eat or anything. sleep.gif She keeps crying and she also says her arm hurts, but I think her arm hurts because she layed on it wrong or something.

I was wondering could she have the mumps? She is not complaining about any other pain. She hasn't gotten sick or anything as of yet. She just won't eat or drink anything. She says she wants chocolate milk but then she just holds it.

I'm just asking about the mumps thing because Kaitlynn got a notice from the school last week. It said that mumps were going around. But I'm sure it could be anything.

I feel stupid for asking and kinda bad. But I don't really have anyway get her to a doctor until this evening.

I'm going try and take her temp here soon too, just see if she might be running a fever.

I know something is wrong because she never just lays around and sleeps. sad.gif unsure.gif

I hope no one thinks I'm a bad mom for asking. But I just can't think of what could be wrong.

Sorry if there is any spelling errors or this don't make any sense.

grapfruit replied: hug.gif You're definatly not a bad mom, obviously you're worried about her! hug.gif

I know you said you can't get her to the doctor until later, but maybe you can call and talk to a nurse. Just to get a feel for what they want you to do for her before you get there. They may at least be able to tell you what to look for if it IS mumps, or tell you, "no, that's not what mumps does".

KUP on her progress...

grapfruit replied: Also, maybe feel her throat to see if her glands are swollen, she maybe sick w/strep or something (doesn't always have a sore throat w/it).

sparkys2boys replied: Hmm.. it may be the mumps..I would get her temp and keep an eye on her. Is her ears or anything sore? I hope she is feeling better soon.

punkeemunkee'smom replied: Mumps

Here is some info..I hope it is not the Mumps! Poor baby! One of my friend's kids got MUMPS 2 years ago and that is how he started the illness sad.gif

mom2my2cuties replied: Does she have a history of headaches....To be honest, it could be a number of things, but the first thing that struck me is it could be a migraine. Those are fairly common in children as well as tension type headaches.

Twelve Volt Man replied: I've never had the mumps, so I have no idea what it's like. I hope she feels better soon, though!

mom21kid2dogs replied: If she has a fever and it continues, I would take her to the Doc. I was SHOCKED to learn that strep throat symptoms in children are vastly different than adults. Olivia was sleeping all the time, not eating much, she did throw up some but it was later in the course of the illness, had a fever (started low grade then got worse) and had a headache. She never once had a sore throat complaint. I took her to the Ped because the fever wouldn't go away, he took one look at her throat and said "I'm 90% sure she has strep". She did. I felt like the world's worst mother at that moment. I had no idea headache, fever and nausea were the hallmark of childhood strep.

3xsthefun replied: Well I tried get her temp best I could and it said 100.5

I'm not sure if it mumps now or not. She also just puked when I was trying to get her temp. So I don't know what to think. She still says her head hurts.

I asked her if her belly hurts and she said no, but that was after the puked, so no wonder. But she didn't say anything about it hurting before she got sick. I guess it could be a migraine or I guess it could be a stomach bug?

Also the other night Rob said he had a really bad headache and his belly hurt. But he never did get sick.

Boo&BugsMom replied: Tanner had a virus the last couple days. He had a temp of 103 for almost 3 days, headaches, sore throat, sneezing, and body aches and chills. There is a lot of nasty stuff going around, it really could be anything. Remember, if you take the temp under the arm you add on a degree to make it accurate, just an FYI. Hope she feels better soon.

3xsthefun replied: Only thing that kind of bugs me though is. None of us has really been sick lately. Kaitlynn had some kind of stomach bug or little almost 3 weeks ago. She has a cold right now though, sore throat and stuffy nose.

Maegan has also not been to any public places much. Probably last time was few weeks ago. I guess it doesn't matter though, one of us could of brought some germs in and not effected us and just her, right? dunno.gif

Sorry to sound so dumb but I don't know how else she could have gotten so sick.

She is still says her head hurts, but she is not really complaining like she was.

I hate when kids get sick, because I always feel so helpless. sleep.gif

I think we will just wait and see how she feels tomorrow and if she is not better. I will get her in soon as possible.

I'm starting to think it might be some kind of virus. There has been lot of weird crap going around here also.

Oh, I did take her temp under her arm so I guess it is around 101.5 then.
I wonder if there is anything I could give her besides some gatorade? I'm going get Rob pick some up on his way home from work.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
You are not sounding dumb dear. You are a concerned parent. I wish more of my daycare parents would be as concerning as you!

You are right, someone could have picked something up and brought it home. You can be a carrier for many things that do not affect you. You as an adult are more immuned than your children so things will also affect you (probably) not so harshly as your children. The virus my son had this week was, we believe, the same virus my hubby had last week. Same symptoms, only my son was way worse than hubby. It knocked him out cold it seemed, where hubby wasn't as bad.

Also, remember there is an incubation period for all ilnesses. She could have picked something up from a store and it could have taken that long to show any symptoms.

If she is puking, you can give her some pedialite. It will replace the nutrients she loses when she throws up so she doesn't become dehydrated. They make popsicle ones that you can freeze and they can eat. Also helps with their temperature because it's so cold.

If her head hurts, I have found Motrin to work really well for the fever and headaches. Lasts longer too. Putting a cool cloth or ice pack on her head will work well too. They also make lolipop type things for kids that help soothe their throats while they are sick if her throat hurts. They are like cough drops on a stick, only for kids.

One thing I got Tanner when he was sick that I really liked was Triaminic Thin Strips. They are like those listerine strips that melt on the toungue, but they are for coughs, cold, noses, etc. Worked really well for him.

Hope she feels better! smile.gif

3xsthefun replied:
Thanks so much you have helped me alot. smile.gif

She is doing little better. She still says her head hurts but has had two popsicles. Those kind are in the pastic tube like thing, I can't recall name of them. blush.gif

She has only puked once and that was about 3 hours ago, so hopefully she will be ok and not puke anymore.

I'll get DH also pick up some motrin for her headache also.

Oh, and she seems better now Kaitlynn is home. She is talking more and playing some. smile.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: Strep normally starts with a headache and vomiting. sad.gif I bet she is achy all over and is just mentioning her arm. My arms hurt when I am sick, and so do my legs. wink.gif

I hope she feels better soon, Tina. KUP on what you find out. hug.gif

amymom replied: Strep often shows up as a tummy ache. My son never had a sore throat with strep, always a stomach ache and a headache. I would keep her hydrated and see how she is in the morning. But if still feverish, you may want to call the docs.

3xsthefun replied: I hope it is not strep throat. sad.gif

She seems to be doing better now. Rob gave her some Tylenol instead of Motrin, it seems like it did break her fever some. She is also wanting to eat and drink more, so hopefully this is bit of a break through.

Oh, and she took about a 2 hour nap after she took the Tylenol, so I'm sure that helped her some. smile.gif I asked her after she woke up if her head hurt and she said no. So hopefully it was just a 12 hour bug or something else. But I will keep a good eye on her until she goes to bed and then see how she is in the morning.

I hope she is better by Saturday, she was invited to a birthday party. And I'm sure she would really love to go.

Thanks everyone so much for the get well wishes for her. happy.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: I'm glad she is already feeling better. I bet it was just a little virus of some sort. wink.gif hug.gif
