What is it with some people?

ilovemybaby wrote: So we have our wee girls name picked and everything. And now I'm not so sure on it. Because first of all my dad pronounces Sophia wrong. He says soph-ia instead of so-phi-a. The emphasis is meant to be on the phee sound. So I corrected him and I think he knows the right way now.
Then today I was talking to one of Pauls friends and she pronounced Charlize "char-lise" instead of "shar-lize". UGH dry.gif
Are they that hard to pronounce?! I thought Sophia was pretty common and Charlize as in Charlize Theron. And I thought most people know who Charlize Theron is. rolleyes.gif

I'm probably worrying about nothing. I had the same thoughts with Naomi because it's pronounced "nay-omi" but some people tend to pronounce it "nye-omi". That's why I decided to go with Sophia.

NEWMOM05 replied: I know what you mean and no neither of those are hard to pronounce. Take my name, Peggy for instance not hard. right. Well, I have people say peggy like pay-gy. blink.gif Weird!!! BTW Beautiful choices.

My3LilMonkeys replied: We have that problem with Madison too. A lot of DH's family (and some strangers too) pronounce it Mad-i-sin instead of Mad-i-son. It really doesn't bother me though.

And although I have heard of Charlize Theron, I would have pronounced it wrong too.

mckayleesmom replied: People call Mckaylee, MACKAYA all the time.... wacko.gif

BAC'sMom replied: I SO know what you mean, it drives me up the wall.
Brandeis gets BRANDON or BRANDIES or BRANDY he has started correcting people because it gets in his nerves.
Ansley gets ASHLEY or AINSLEY
And with Callum I get CALEB and COLLOM.

I guess that is what I get for naming my children unique names right? Still makes me growl.gif .

pinniy replied: Beautiful names, you have picked. And NO, it's not uncommon to have people "jacking" up, what we believe to be, common, or not so unusual names. Try having the name "Zoila," Z-oil-a, c'mon, how hard is that? But because it is not common to see, peole quickly say Ziola, Zola, or Zolia. I suffer from others have unusual name dislexia (no offense to those who have it, or know someone who does).

Now, with Trei-Trei, his real name is Geoffrey, and a LOT of people pronounce it Goffrey. As a matter a fact, some news reporter down in Aruba pronounced the name of the new 19 year old suspect, in the Holloway case, that way. Which is why I chuckled when I read your posts. Now, with Azia, I'm curious to see how many people will pronounce it A-Zee-ya, or A-Zee-a, when it's just like the continent, except with a Z in it, because I wanted her to have a little bit of "me" in it.

We'll see.

ashtonsmama replied: I don't think many people will have trouble pronouncing it...they shouldn't at least! I love Sophia Charlize, I think it's very cute!
wub.gif

And I've had people ask (after I've told them Ashton's name) if it's Aston, Alton, Anton, or Asher...so I'm with ya.
laugh.gif

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I wouldn't worry about it too much...If you and DH can pronounce the names right, that's all that really matters, kwim?

Some people call me Ree-ah or Ray-ah. I don't get how just RAE (prounounced Ray) is so hard...but oh well. I'm sure I botch some names up too from time to time!

Cece00 replied:
See, I never wouldve guessed that your daughter's name is Asia b/c of the Z, b/c Z is always pronounced "zee" in english.

CosmetologyMommy replied: My name Shannan is typically spelled Shannon so I get called Shane-a all the time or Shawna.

kimberley replied: weird. i would have pronounced it right dunno.gif i think the names you chose are pretty!

ilovemybaby replied:
Yeah I thought it was pronounced "a-zi-a". Oops blush.gif

I guess you are right though... there's always going to be someone with name dyslexia who can't pronounce even the simplest name right. I just thought my dad wouldn't be one of those! HAHA Because he is intelligent (studying Psychology right now, did last year Maths in his second to last year and got A plus... well, you get the idea).
My name is Renee and I've had people spell it "Renae, rinay, etc..." and pronounce it "ree-nee". It is annoying. Even my aunties don't spell it right half the time... they spell it Rene. Which is the boys spelling. mad.gif

I guess since we will be calling her Sophie it won't matter anyway... you can't really get that wrong can you? rolleyes.gif

Heather77 replied: Both are very pretty, and not hard at all to pronounce!

LoganAndAubreesMommy replied: I had a hard time picking out names for the same reason. Especially where I'm from......people really know how to butcher a name. I love the name Julia, but most people say Jule-ya instead of Jul-lee-a. My daughter's name was Aubree...a lot of ppl said Arbree. Drove me nuts. I'd definately go with it anyway....don't let ignorant people influence you!!

daycare mom replied: I've been "told" not to pick certain names (or unusual) for that reason. But I've noticed that no matter what name you have, there will be SOMEONE who misspells or mispronounces it. So I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you like it, and you teach your child to spell it, it's nobody's business!

Cece00 replied: My kids have relatively easy names to spell, I've never had anyone mess up my boys names. In fact, with this 3rd boy, all of my boys have 4 letter names. My daughter has a relatively common (as in, ppl have heard of it) name, its Natalie. I had someone ask me a couple of months ago how to spell that blink.gif I know there are other ways to spell it, but to me...isnt the "normal" way to spell it an obvious assumption?? I've personally never seen it spelled any way other than Natalie. Maybe thats just me. My boys names are Ross, Evan, and now Jack. I'd like to see someone mess those up rolling_smile.gif

pinniy replied:

Careful, Crystal. You might just run into someone who will. Jack might become Jake, Ross become Russ, and Evan be pronounced Ee-von. tongue.gif
