What is your fear? - safe topic, I hope
cameragirl21 wrote: Since Ernesto is on his way here and I have a bout of strep throat I am watching Animal Planet and they had a show on sharks. I was just telling a friend that I would love to go on a shark dive and have always wanted to dive with a great white. Since I have no fear of animals of any kind everyone thinks I'm fearless but the truth is that I'm very afraid of heights. HATE to be up high. So I'll ride roller coasters because they take you up but then take you right back down but I will NOT ride the ferris wheel. I also hate that big boat that swings back and forth like some kind of pirate ship and swings you up so high that you feel like you'll fall out. What is your fear? Take care, Jennifer
TheOaf66 replied: I have a rule...if it is on the ground I will probably do it
If it is in the air, odds are not a chance
aspenblue1 replied: I am terrified of heights also.
mckayleesmom replied: My kids riding in the cars without me present
Drowning
Sharks..I don't even go out that far in the water...they are not getting the opportunity to eat me.
Lots of things.
cameragirl21 replied: so you don't fly, like in an airplane to go anywhere? I used to get nervous during takeoff but I guess I've come to realize that this is just a fate thing--what's meant to be is going to happen whether your like it or not. Not to mention that there is a lot of travel in the realm of photography. Just can't go to Heathrow cuz they won't let me take my cameras and lights on the plane.... Jennifer
redchief replied: I am afraid of death. I've done nearly everything else (with the exception of jumping out of an airplane).
1lilpeanut2love replied: My fears:
~Dying ~Being Alone ~Being A Single Mom ~Losing my lil girl ~Snakes outside ~Spiders everywhere ~Airplanes[never been in/ on one and don't plan too]
I Hate Roller Coasters. UGghh. They freak me out.
coasterqueen replied: Lots of fears, but a big one for is snakes, tomato worms..yuck!
ashtonsmama replied: I'm definitely afraid of snakes, also moths and earwigs, and being alone.
cameragirl21 replied: what do you mean by your kids riding in the cars without you present? You mean like letting someone else drive them or are you talking about toy cars that they play in? As for drowning and sharks, my guess is you're not an ocean kind of girl. I am actually very drawn to water and a very good swimmer so the idea of being out in the ocean like on a sinking cruise ship does not scare me and I've always been drawn to sharks BUT that movie "Open Water" scared the living daylights out of me. Jennifer
TheOaf66 replied: nope don't like to fly, would rather drive
I don't mind the water at all
cameragirl21 replied: I think most people are afraid of dying, it's called fear of the unkown. As my former boss used to say, "the upside is that it's the kind of thing that you can only go through once." But when I was in college, I took a class called, "On death and dying" because my plan at the time was to become an er doctor and I knew I'd have to deal with this a lot. My prof, who was a Presbyterian (sp?) minister told us an interesting allegory--he said that there was a a little pool full of tadpoles and one grew his legs before the others so he broke the surface and saw the world out of the water and since he still had his tail, was able to go back underwater to tell the other tadpoles about what he saw. So he said, "you won't believe what's above the water, where we're all going to go soon!!!!" And the other tadpoles begged him to tell them about what he saw and when he went to describe it, he said, "It's, it's...." The point was there were no words he could come up with because there was nothing like it in the world he was used to. We don't know what else is out there and we can't really imagine it because it's a whole other plane of existence. But that doesn't necessarily make it bad. Take care, Jennifer
mckayleesmom replied: If they are riding in a car...I have to be in the car....For some reason I think that if I am in the car with them....then the car won't crash.
I have had a car type phobia for as long as I can remember....When I was little I use to hold my breath in the car as long as I could because I thought that if I did...the car wouldn't crash....When I got older instead of holding my breath..I would put my feet on the dashboard to brace myself for an accident and I don't like riding in the back seat or putting me or my kids in the back seat of cars with no doors in the back....
If Im driving...Im fine.
mom2my2cuties replied: Heights - however flight isn't a problem - but things like roller coasters, ferris wheels etc - oh my lord NO!!!!!!!
cameragirl21 replied: McKaylee's mom, I think you have a fear of not being in control, that is why you don't like it when you're not driving or when there are no doors, as in, no way out, you are trapped. I am very much a believer in past lives and perhaps you were killed in a car crash in a past life. I often wonder if I didn't fall of a cliff or something to that effect in a past life because I am SOOOO afraid of heights and yet there is no rational reason for it as far as something happening to me in this life. Jennifer
mckayleesmom replied: Yes...that is exactly what it is....I think that if Im in the car...I can control the situation. How many here have pointed out a potential danger to your spouse while driving? I always think...what would have happened if I wasn't in the car?
Its definantly a control issue with me.......
redchief replied: Jennifer, I have no general fear of the unknown. I see life's unknows as challenges to overcome. Death I fear because it is beyond unknown into a spiritual realm I can't understand until I get there. Perhaps that is my fear, that I am no farther advanced than the tiniest child when it comes to knowing what comes after this life. I'm an information kind of guy.
cameragirl21 replied: But Ed, death is not just the unkown, it is the unkown that is permanent. There is no going back, there is no way out. My "on death and dying" professor likened it to being in a room with white walls and bright light but no doors or windows. As for not knowing what lies beyond, I think that is the idea. I was a kid when the movie "Flatliners" came out but watching it now as an adult (I mean not right now at this moment but I've watched it a few times as a grownup) I think the point was that we are not meant to know. Jennifer
C&K*s Mommie replied: I am a chicken with many things.
*heights *water *heights over water ---------- those are my three BIGGEST fears!
*as I have aged, rollercoasters *creepy crawly creatures and critters (probably 98% of the ones in the world) *ghosts/spirits (I have never had a personal exp and never want to either ) *fires *age related illnesses, such as Alzheimers, or Parkinsons (I am quite independent so being dependent on another is not my forte')
cameragirl21 replied: so you don't go in the ocean then, Nix4noles? I actually prefer to takeoff in an airplane over the ocean, I somehow feel safer over water, so I guess I'm the opposite of you in this case. As for fires, do you light candles in your house? As for ghosts, I've seen them plenty of times, it's really not scary nor is it like the movies. But if you haven't by the time you're an adult you probably won't unless you go to a haunted place. Take care, Jennifer
moped replied: I have many fears, and more since having Jack.
Car accident
Being buried alive
Spiders - Ewwwww, so scared.
I LOVE the ocean - I am also a scuba diver!!!!!
luvmykids replied: snakes and being in a large body of water that I can't see/touch the bottom of.
gr33n3y3z replied: The only fear I have is my kids dying before me
Other then that no fear
C&K*s Mommie replied:
oh no I love to go in the water. We have two types of beaches nearby, a shallow one where the water is mid thigh high for a 75 or so yards. And the one on the other side of the road is a typical beach. I love both. It is deep water where you cannot feel the bottom or even see it that is my problem. I will get in it, or on a boat but I fear it still.
Of course we light candles in our home. It is the unexpected electrical fires, or dryer vent/lint fires that scare me.
I have close people who can relay stories of the supernatural to me. Some of where the "spirit" was evil or liked to play games, and others where it was merely a presence. I just do not wish to encounter them in this life, if I do not have to.
oh and I am claustrophobic.
cameragirl21 replied: being buried alive...that is an interesting one. Do you mean that you are afraid that everyone will think you're dead and bury you when you're still alive? Or do you mean like in a landslide or mudslide or avalanche? Snakes and spiders are a popular vote, I really don't know why everyone fears these, they are mostly harmless. I love snakes, I think they're very graceful and feminine in the way they move. As many of you know, though, I hate the idea of them eating live mice or rats or live anything for that matter. But I don't really like cobras, guess I don't like the hood, it's sinister. I went to an everglades preservation place down by the everglades called the "Everglades Outpost" and they have a bunch of snakes in cages and I kept flicking my hand toward the rattlers to make them rattle, they sound like maracas! And the faster I flicked my hand, they faster they rattled. I know it's super immature and it did stress out the snakes but I actually got a real kick out of it! Jennifer
BAC'sMom replied: Heights Small places Clowns June Bugsā¦.when they fly and get in my hair Oh and being burned at the stake!
luvmykids replied:
Yes, being the witch you are I can see that being a valid fear!
My2Beauties replied: The death of someone in my family
Dying myself (especially suffering before dying)
Car crashes
Terrorists (I work downtown in a fairly tall building, but I don't let it run my everyday life, just the thought pops into my head when we hear planes fly over, but I'm not afraid to fly though weird I know)
Spiders
Cave Crickets (oh these are the scariest creatures on earth)
Disease (cancer, MS, heart disease for myself and my family)
OK not just spiders and crickets - any bugs really I am the only person that screams if a ladybug lands on me - honestly I'm terrified of bugs and insects with the exception of ants, not scared of them
I have a weird fear of one day something happening and I'm not able to pay my bills and going back into debt and screwing up my credit again (it was so messed up in college, now that I've paid everything off, I've worked so hard to get it to look good that I'm afraid something out of my hands will happen and we'll have a hard time making ends meet and our credit will suffer or something)
So....basically...I'm a huge chicken!
cameragirl21 replied: Nix4noles, a good friend of mine had a house fire when she was 9 months PG. She woke up one morning to find the curtains in her room on fire and ran outside to warn all the neighbors (she lived in an apt building). She and her DH had 7 cats, all of whom they were very attached to and they lost all 7, as well as all the stuff they owned, right after we all threw her a baby shower. My parents are both electrical engineers by trade so the first thing I did was call my dad to try to figure out how it happened. Get this--they had an electrical short of a lamp that was plugged in BUT WAS NOT TURNED ON!! That freaked me out, didn't think that was possible. I was amazed that she didn't go into labor from the stress. Glad you're not afraid of the ocean, I think the ocean is absolutely magical. And as for ghosts, they're usually not evil from my experience. Take care, Jennifer

luvmykids replied: Doesn't matter. It's still my fear and just about everyone I know has tried to rationalize it out of me. Ain't happening.
Kirstenmumof3 replied: My worst fear is loosing Spencer and telling my daughters that they've lost there brother.
cameragirl21 replied: LeAnn, what is a cave cricket? Btw, are you afraid of butterflies? I photograph them all the time, usually when they're on me. Recently, I photographed kids with a swarm of butterflies on them--on their hair, clothes, hands, etc. They loved it! I just hate cockroaches, and here in FL we have plenty of them, and since I am an avid gardener I get plenty of them in the garden because they are drawn to vegetation. Other than that I don't mind insects and I love ladybugs and butterflies but for the most part I can do without insects, especially mosquitoes. I think fear of dying or losing someone in your family or disease is normal, especially once you're a mom and have someone who depends on you. Take care, Jennifer
C&K*s Mommie replied: wow! glad she was okay in the end though. Sorry about the cats. Our neighbor almost lost her life trying to save some of her cats last yr, in a fire. If it were not for our other neighbor going in after her, she would have died likely too. He made the decision for her, that she is more important than the cats. In the end some actually got out, but I cannot remember just how many.
coasterqueen replied: You know I don't know why I'm afraid of snakes or spiders either. I guess maybe it's because they 'suprise me'. You know I don't see them til they are crawling on me or maybe it's because they are invading my space? I don't like many things that 'invade' my space like mice.
Oh I have a HUGE fear of dogs, but that's because I was almost attacked by one a few years ago and my cat was and almost died. This is a huge problem with me since my sitter has like 8 dogs.
cameragirl21 replied: Kirsten, I don't know what to say, I didn't even think about that when I started this thread, I'm really sorry, your fear goes way beyond heights and things like that. Please think about what I said when I Pm'd you, I'd love to help in any way I can. Be well, Jennifer
coasterqueen replied: ah hun,
cameragirl21 replied: Well, I can see how getting attacked by a dog would make you afraid. Maybe you could get a puppy of a small, harmless breed, like a yorkie or something to overcome it. I'm very big into the notion of trying to overcome my fears, I plan to go skydiving so I won't be afraid of heights anymore. I'm just trying to rationalize spending in excess of $200 to jump out of an airplane.... Jennifer
coasterqueen replied: Yeah we plan to get a dog someday for the girls. I can deal with dogs as long as they don't have a loud bark or a mean looking growl.
I think it's great when you can try to overcome fears. I've done that with many smaller fears in my life and it's really "freeing", IYKWIM.
You know a guy friend of mine that I also dated for a moment back in highschool...him and I always talked about skydiving when we graduated highschool. Never did it,though. Wonder if he ever ended up doing it.
3xsthefun replied: I have a lot of fears.
* Heights * Roller Coasters * Airplanes (never been on one and never plan to) * Fires (we had a house fire about 2 years about right before Christmas) * Snakes * Death * Car crashes (a girl rear ended me last year with the kids in the vehicle with me. Luckly they was not hurt, but I still can not get over it, I hate for someone follow to close now. Because I'm afraid they won't stop fast enough and run into back of my car.) * Ghost (yeah, childish I know) *Being Alone
Brias3 replied: Some of the top fears of mine, outside of the whole death/losing people/etc. area, is heights, any sort of large insect or spider, mice/rats/rodents, snakes and pitch blackness.
cameragirl21 replied: well, I guess then you wouldn't like to keep a rat as a pet, huh, Bria? As to total darkness, do you mean that you don't sleep in the pitch dark? Some adults still like lights or night lights. I had a roommate in college who liked light when she slept whereas I like pitch blackness and needless to say, we had constant arguments at nighttime.... Jennifer
mom2my2cuties replied: No arguement needed for that - just wait until she is asleep and turn off the lights or get those granny things that black out all the light
mom2my2cuties replied: My biggest fear of bugs is June Bugs - I got one in my ear as a child and I still remember them having to get it out and stuff with a vaccum thing - and I lost some of my hearing from it in one ear.
cameragirl21 replied: what is a June bug? Is it like a cicada or something? I don't think we have those here in Florida. Jennifer
BAC'sMom replied:

cameragirl21 replied: ewwwwww, those look disgusting! I don't think I would like June bugs either. We have the colorful kind here, the scarab beetles but they're not too common, I've only seen a few and I am outside a lot. Jennifer
Jackie012007 replied: I hate snakes and always have... I guess when I was like 2 one came up next to me in the grass and scared the bejeezus out of me... I can't even look at pictures of them and failed a biology class because I wouldn't go to lab for 2 weeks while we were doing a unit on snakes and my professor brought some into the classroom Other than that, I can handle pretty much anything
coasterqueen replied: I absolutely hate June bugs. Gives me the heebee jeebees. They just like dart at you out of nowhere, and if you don't notice them coming at you and you walk inside and look in the mirror they're right there, on your back or in your hair just hangin' around. YIKES!!!!!! They freak me out too.
