When do the kids know who is their teacher?

We get a letter about a week before school starts in the fall, and they post class lists at the school at about the same time. But I know they work it all out in April or May. I am guessing they don't let kids know in the event something changes - as is happening at my son's school, one of the 5th grade teachers is moving to the middle school, so all of the kids in her class will be in an unknown teacher's class.
So how does it happen for everyone else?
mom21kid2dogs replied: Olivia is in a private school with 70 kids. We know all the teachers so there is no real "assignment" for us. If she's in 3rd grade, she has the 3rd/4th grade teacher. The local public district posts the class lists in early August. If people have teacher requests in the district, they are doing it now.
coasterqueen replied: Here, about a few weeks before school, you have to drive to the school and they post the listings on the door. Really tacky IMO, but it's all about saving a buck and it costs postage to mail out a letter. Although it probably costs me more than that to drive all the way to the school, since we are rural and the school is in another "town".
MyBlueEyedBabies replied: we find out the weekend before school starts. Last year they tried putting it onlyne but some where along the way there was a snafu and it got picked up by google so I think they are back to just the lists on the wall like it has been done forever.
Jamison'smama replied: They post ours on the doors to the school a couple of weeks before school starts.
booey2 replied: The first day of school when the kids get there, they will find out when they line up in the school yard and they are called for their class.
jcc64 replied: They receive a letter from their teachers a few weeks before school starts.
My3LilMonkeys replied: Same here. Since Brooke will be in K she gets an orientation a few weeks before to find the classroom, meet the teacher, etc. but the older grades don't do that.
msoulz replied: Wow, talk about just in time!
booey2 replied: I know, they do this here so there is no whining by parents who don't want a particular teacher. You get who you get and that is that. If there is a real issue they will talk you once school is in and you generally know who they will get because the same teachers usually teach the same grades every year. The only time it changes is if someone moves on to another school and new ones' come in or there is a huge increase or drop in enrollement.
A&A'smommy replied: well our school board was suppose to meet yesterday about getting students into classrooms for next year but someone that is on the school board had a last minute thing so thursday they are putting kids into classrooms I will find out as soon as its put on the computer because my husband deals with all that and I have no idea when they will sent out letters
Crystalina replied: Izabella's school always has a field trip in 2nd grade to get the know the (3,4 &5) grade school. She met her teacher there that day.
Evan is just going into Kindergarten and I should receive a letter from her (actually they address to the child) and it will say who she is and what he needs for school.
