Who is cord blood banking?

Boys r us wrote: We pretty much knew we would, however we got our cord blood info package last week and we looked it over and decided that we couldn't put a price tag on having that reassurance. So we definitely are.

Cece00 replied: I've thought about it, but never done it. I've considered donating it, though.

jcc64 replied: I don't want to dampen your spirits on this issue, Nicole, but you may want to do a little research first. I always thought the idea of banking cord blood was a good one- until I saw one of the news magazine shows (maybe it was "Nightline?") do a whole show about it. Apparently, the chances of banked cord blood being of any real value in specific medical crises are much much smaller than you would hope or are led to believe by the cord blood banks. I really cannot remember the specifics, but I would implore you to investigate a little bit beforehand. Good luck with it.

Italianhuney replied:
Yes, I was convinced to do this until I saw somethin on it, but chances are slim, most people that do it don't use it.

jcc64 replied: Did a very cursory google on it, and found this, quickly:
http://www.cordblood.med.ucla.edu/experts.html

this is not the link I was hoping to find- but I'll dig around a little more later on.

Boys r us replied: I know that it may not be of much value now, but I think it's more about what possibilities the future could hold.

Not to mention my DH is an avid investor in stem cell stock..lol!

3_call_me_mama replied: We're not. Mainly for the fact of what jeanne is saying. We researched it a lot and found that the chances of US ever using our own babies blood was ery slim. (The stem cells may not even be compatible with anyone in our family etc) and teh chances are if it's a genetic disorder that the baby has in some way, the same disorder is in those stem cells. I would however donate the cord blood to be banked. But to cover the expense privately we just can't see doing.

coasterqueen replied:
That was the same for us. We were told by many people that the money spent on cord banking was much better spent on a college fund.

Mommy2Isabella replied: We looked into it. Very pricey ... and like most have said, the chance of US using it to correct a problem the baby has ... isn't likely!!

Edward's Mommy replied:
Same with us!

Heather77 replied: Nope, we won't be...

NEWMOM05 replied: We didn't

kit_kats_mom replied: Nope.

EvesMom replied: I didn't do it either. I did consider it, but after some research I decided against. Somebody I know, had a son with leukemia, and had a stem cell transplant. He is in heaven now.

gr33n3y3z replied:
yes I saw that also and in most cases they can not even use it sad.gif

Bee_Kay replied: How much does it cost?

mckayleesmom replied:
Exactly....there are a bunch of lawsuits in process right now because people found out that they had banked their cord blood for nothing because in most cases, the disease that you are trying to cure is still in the cord blood....so its useless...I read about a few people that had sick kids and found out they had invested so much money in cord banking and couldn't even use it for their child when they needed it.

3xsthefun replied: No, we did not.

EvesMom replied:
"Banking a baby's cord blood can initially cost between $1,200 and $1,800, plus an additional $100 to $125 a year."

Kaitlin'smom replied: Nope.

Bee_Kay replied:
WOW! ohmy.gif
