Whole grains
coasterqueen wrote: Ok, so on our quest to lead a healthier life Dh convinced me to go with whole wheat grain breads instead of my yummy yummy white bread. SIGH. Ok, so I was looking at the package and a slice of whole wheat grain bread is MORE than white bread. How is changing to that going to help me with calories and losing weight?
kit_kats_mom replied: IT's more filling. I don't really know but I do know that all of that refined flour is not good for you at all. We like the Arnold brand breads if we must buy off of the shelf. Their Whole Wheat is only 1 point per slice I think...maybe it's two.
3_call_me_mama replied: If you're tryingto get health benefits form teh switch, check and make sure your bread isn't made with High fructose corn syrup. It may be hard to find them but they are out there. AND they are very filling and healthier adn I believe teh calorie content is lower.
coasterqueen replied: Well I didn't find the sandwich I just ate filling. I am switching for the health benefits for sure, but help in the weight loss department would be a plus.
I think it was Sara Lee brand bread. Not sure what it has in it. I really need to buy it from our bread store and not sure what they have, but it's tons cheaper to buy bread there.
I'll check out the package tonight when I get home.
redchief replied: I agree with above and want to add... You don't have to give up your "white" bread to get the extra fiber that whole grain breads give you. There are new white breads that are made with whole grains and have as much fiber as the whole wheats and ryes.
Here's the one from Wonder
Our Lil' Family replied: Sorry Ed but that one tastes like you know what! I tried it!
MyLuvBugs replied: The fiber helps to cleanse your body of toxins and keep you regular. Also, the fiber sorta counteracts the sugar, so that not so much sugar is absorbed into your body (that's a VERY simple way of saying it anyway. ) The fiber also makes you feel fuller longer, so you don't snack as much. Believe me your body will be so much happier. Good luck!!
Boo&BugsMom replied: I could be wrong, but the way I was told was this: whole grains digest easier and are all around better for you than white flour. Even though they may contain more calories, the overall health benefits outweigh it than using white flour. Plus, since it digests easier and contains less fat (which is what I look for in a lot of foods, is the fat grams), it doesn't "stick to your ribs" like white bread does.
Actually, I just looked at our bread in the frig. Hubby likes white, I do not. I prefer wheat of anything, especially noodles. Hubby's white bread is 100 calories and mine is 70. Everything is less on the wheat, and that is just cheap store brand bread. It could be the brand your bought. I personally like Brownberry.
coasterqueen replied: Must be the brand because our white bread is 60 calories a slice and the wheat whole grain is 80 calories a slice. Now, that's only 20 calories, but I need every calorie I can get, especially during those PMS times.
Kaitlin'smom replied: I also prefer wheat over white, however I am off bread for a while and using low carb wraps, they are really YUMMY and only 1point and with all I stuff into it my wrap is only 2 sometimes 3 points.
redchief replied: Hmm... Kaitlin doesn't mind that one (she's on a high fiber diet due to her digestive system issues). She also likes Stroehmann Extreme Kids' White, but I can't find that and it may only be available locally. It comes in a silver wrapper.
This is the only one I could find from Stroehmann
Boo&BugsMom replied: I love the Flat-Out bread too!!! Those have 210 calories a wrap though (the Tomato one at least). But, they don't have any "bad" fat, which is good.
DansMom replied: Even better, whenever you can buy from a bakery. There's nothing healthier than really fresh, multigrain bread with just four or five ingredients.
Kaitlin'smom replied: NO way the wraps I have only have 90 calories, if I were going to have 210 I woudl be eatting bread. No bad fat in mine I will have to get the name they really are tasty
Boo&BugsMom replied: It might be because it's the sun-dried tomato one. I know the wheat one is a lot less, and the spinach one is less too. If you find the name of yours let me know. I'm curious. I'm always looking for healthier stuff, even though hubby rolls his eyes at me! He's not into healthy eating like I am.
luvmykids replied: Someone told me that if the very first ingredient is anything other than 100% whole grain flour it doesn't count as whole wheat even if the name says so, like some of the "white" wheat breads ... they are "enriched wheat flour". Anyone know?
coasterqueen replied: Our health food store makes them fresh but it's clear across town and very expensive gas wise just to get over there. Seriously. We make a trip there once a week, but that's about it.
Dh mentioned maybe getting a breadmaker. I don't know anything about them. Do you think that would be just as good?
Kaitlin'smom replied: I have one, as long as you dont buy the mixes it would be good. Mine is VERY easy to use dump in the ingredients (certain order which is listed) close the lid push the button (one of 3 depending how dark you want the crust) and let it do its thing. YUMMY
luvmykids replied: I have a bread machine and looooove it, you can make all kinds of awesome stuff. My favorite is a sourdough with cheese and green chile.
3_call_me_mama replied: We have a bread machine too and love it, but find the bread is hard to use for sandwiches. It makes pretty dense bread sometimes and it can be a hugh sandwich. BUT it makes awesome toast adn french toast and great with dinner. Athough I know some people that only make and eat homemade bread. For sandwiches and everything else. Def worht looking into (the breadmaker, not necessarliy making it all from scratch all teh time) IMO>
coasterqueen replied: Carrie,
Yeah we take sandwiches to work every day for lunch. That's what keeps us away from the restaurants and fast food. So it might not be a good thing, the breadmaker, if it's not good for sandwiches.
BTW, I checked the bread last night and about the 3rd or 4th ingredient was that high frutose syrup stuff you mentioned. So I'll be on the hunt for the right bread this weekend.
3_call_me_mama replied: We found one at our regular grocery store yesterday.. it's called Family Grains. It's whole wheat, multi grain or honey oat. It has NO high fructose corn syrup in the whole wheat one. It's really yummy and it was $1.99 a loaf (for a big loaf and it was on sale Buy one get one free) the Honey oat has corn syrup but not teh high fructose one so it's still a little high in calories but nto as bad for you as the high fructose kind. OH an dht ewhole wheat one is 80 calories a slice. So not horrible but as low as you'd like probably. The problem with all teh lite breads I've found is that they have fillers and not much health in them
