Why is breastfeeding under Baby's First Year?

Mama Piadosa wrote: Any other mamas out there who breastfeed beyond a year?

moped replied: I didn't but there are lots on here who do - and welcome!

kit_kats_mom replied: Oh yeah. Quite a few of us either have or are in the process. tongue.gif

My first was a nursling for 21 mos until her baby sister was on the way & she weaned herself.

Currently nursing my 14 month old who shows no signs or being ready to stop. Although she doesn't seem to be quite as attached as Katherine was. At least Lauren will eat solids. rolling_smile.gif

My 2nd weaned at 24 months when I was about 8 weeks pregnant with my second.

My second is still nursing at 11.5 months and we hope to make it at least to 24 months. Although this one nurses to survive and that's it. rolleyes.gif

Mama Piadosa replied:
We're at the 17 month mark now- and he is just now starting to eat like "other" kids.
My oldest was adopted at two and for my next two I nursed 12 months and that was it (I was working outside the home and really thought that EVERYONE weaned at a year or less.) So this is our first foray into toddler nursing!

kit_kats_mom replied: Well, it sure is different than nursing an infant. laugh.gif It has it's pros and it's cons. My current pro; I know she will stop what she's doing at least a few times a day and cuddle up with me and I also love that co-sleeping nursing. What a cuddlekins!
My current con; kicking. Swear she's going to be a wonderful multitasker. She can already nurse and kickbox at the same time. tongue.gif rolleyes.gif

kimberley replied: wavey.gif currently tandem nursing my 2.5yo and my 2mo daughters. i nursed my boys until 13mos.

CantWait replied: not much past a year, but a little.

Jamison'smama replied: Nursed 1st until 23 months when she weaned herself when I was pregnant with number 2. Number 2 is still going strong at 14 months!

coasterqueen replied:
I'll take that con Cary. tongue.gif I'll take it any day of the week. It's got to be better than the constant scraping and biting Megan does. I get bit at least once or twice a day now and she draws blood at least once a week if not more. dry.gif I have permanent damage to my right nipple. She's EVIL! growl.gif I've done every tip known to man and Kellymom.com and nothing works for that girl. If she didn't just nurse to survive I'd go on strike! rolleyes.gif

amynicole21 replied: 26 months with my first, and will probably go as long with my 2nd. The scraping and biting is getting a bit old at our house, too dry.gif

Kirstenmumof3 replied: I breastfeed my second for 15mths and then he weaned himself. I breastfeed my third child until she was 27mths and then I was ready for her to wean.

Mommy2Isabella replied: I read in a parenting or pregnancy magazine, can't remember which, some women BF much further than a year. One that I can remember her son I believe was 5 or maybe even older than that. There are many support groups for women who BF for much longer than a year, because of the way the public now frowns upon it altogether!

My2Beauties replied: As you can see many moms on here do. I only breastfed for 6 weeks, but when I have another child I plan on BF'ing for longer.

holley79 replied: Well Annika is a very healthy nursling. I am trying so hard to keep my supply up and I am back at work full time. Annika is 3 months and I plan on nursing her for as long as she wants to. Though lately she has started really "gumming" me and killing me but I haven't thrown in the towel yet.

supermom replied: I did - Anders was 3 1/2 before he weaned - and Emily was over 2. The three older ones were around 18 mos each..........(hey, it's been 20+ years, I've forgot by now!)

paradisemommy replied: taven was 3 1/2 before he gave it up and skyler is 8 months and going strong..will continue to bf until she decides she's done..

DansMom replied: Daniel weaned at 3 years 1 month old. I could have gone longer, but he was totally ready.

Supermom, how are you?! Long time no see!
