Would it be awful?

mysweetpeasWil&Wes wrote: If I didn't get a gift for my baby who is turning 1 next week??? We have so many toys and there really isn't anything he needs....blush. blush.gif What do you get a one year old that gets everything handed down by his brother? Wesley has soooooooo many clothes...he has toys...we just got the boys a little pool. Any suggestions? I want him to have something to open, but a part of me is thinking "will he ever really know?" Oh that is soooooo BAD! laugh.gif My FIL will be here, so I know he will want to get him something. Or he may just deposit money in his account, which is what we could do. But I want him to have a little something to open. I'm just not sure what. unsure.gif

My3LilMonkeys replied: Honestly we didn't get Madison a lot for her 1st birthday - a few clothes, shoes, a toy or 2. And a pack of diapers and some jars of baby food. blush.gif Like you said, she had everything she needed and she was really too little to notice.

boyohboyohboy replied: we actually do that alot...our youngest hasnt been old enough to realize it for easter or his birthday or christmas, and we have so many clothes and toys, there isnt room in the house..
we figure we will have to start soon though because the oldest one will notice that santa didnt bring his brother anything....smile.gif
i see nothing wrong with it.

kit_kats_mom replied: Katherine was still struggling with Lauren's existence when Lauren turned one. I got her a few outfits and shoes but her big gift was a family pass to Sea World. That way Katherine got to celebrate Lauren's gift too & it gives us something fun to do as a family...which is the best gift ever IMO.

PrairieMom replied: I spent about $35 on each kid, and they each had one thing to open. We don't need anything over here either. blush.gif

flirtycuddle replied: I'm actually in the same situation. My son has everything from his sister and clothes from family friends. I do know I am getting him a lil play guitar cuz he wont leave his dads alone from the game guitar hero lol.

Maddie&EthansMom replied: I know the feeling. I had no clue what to get Maddie for her birthday. It was sad. blush.gif

Wrap a box with some pretty paper and a pretty bow. He'll be happier than a pig in $%&# rolling_smile.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied: I would probably just get him one thing to open, that way you have pictures of his first b-day opening a present. I'm all about the pictures. smile.gif I know what you mean though. No sense in going all out when you don't need to. Ya know...stemming off of what Aimee said...kids this age love the boxes more than the presents anyways.......just let him open a bunch of empty boxes! laugh.gif wink.gif

ETA: what about something personalized, like a my first piggy bank or a special shirt made just for him??? Books? Musical instruments for babies? A push bike?

Brias3 replied:
I actually did that with Mason! He LOVED (and still loves) the opening of the package more than what's actually inside.

Besides, I just remember getting the kids some small things. They didn't need anything then really. They still don't NEED anything on their birthdays, but now that they realize, you can't slide by that! laugh.gif

BabyOwen427 replied: I went to the 88c section in the toys at wallyworld and got him refrigerator magnets. and I got him BIG crayons for little hands. Just find some cheap stuff like that that he can open.

ETA: For us the big fun traditional thing we did was watch him eat his first cake, way messy and so fun tongue.gif Took lots of pics. user posted image

BabyOwen427 replied: Ooh, sorry that was so big.
Ugh! Red eyes. I wish you could see his blues

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Thanks you guys! Now I don't feel so bad. blush.gif Yeah, Wesley is all about empty boxes! I was thinking a sandbox, but then I'm not sure if he is even ready for that. Wil always takes over, so its hard to find something that will be solely Wesley's. Hmmm. Push toys are fun at this age, but he isn't even crawling yet. Still scootin' around on his belly!

I'll post pics when the day comes! Until then, I'm trying to enjoy the last few days of infant-hood. wub.gif Where did the year go?

amymom replied: For Billy's first birthday we gave him a box of cheerios. It was wrapped so he had something to open ... He enjoyed the box more than anything else.

gotoneson replied: Hi All,
We did not buy our son a gift for his first birthday. He received gifts from aunts and uncles and grandparents, and we hosted a family gathering, but no actual gift from us. No one even noticed.

DansMom replied: Yeah, at that age, when he was getting so many toys, I got him a book that I had loved as a child, and wrote a dedication to him. That way, it's something that keeps giving. When he's grown, he can see what I wrote to him when he was one (and two, I did the same at age two).

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied:
That's a really cute idea, thanks!

gotoneson replied: Great idea! DS's second birthday is this summer, and I am going to do the same thing...but which book to pick...I used to love Green Eggs and Ham and Where The Wild Things Are. Tough choice. Maybe I will give him both!

MommytoTommy replied: we got tommy a push toy that becomes a "bike" and a ball blower thing. he loves balloons and balls. my mom got him a swing for the back yard and he got the beginnings of a college fund from my grama. thats all.
do u have a swing? or a wagon? kids love to be outside. thats my suggestion!
but yes, he was more interested in the paper.

Miranda1127 replied: i agree a if one yr old really doesn't need anything it's not that big a deal to skip the present thing. what i do for my dd (and ds starting in july) is get them a collectors item. we collect barbies for Liesy, this is something that doesn't come out of the box and is meant to be a collectors item in hope that one day they will have more value. i think we will go w/action figures for Steven but i'm still unsure. anyway this is what we do mostly b/c Liesy's b-day is in feb, right after christmas and we are swamped. this way she opens something and it goes somewhere too (kwim).

good luck

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied:
We bought the boys one of those large wood play structures last winter and its still sitting in a box in the garage. DH plans to build it soon, but that's where the swings are. A wagon is actually a great idea. I forgot about that one, thanks!

moped replied:
Yeah a wagon is fun - we have the Radio Flyer - Jack loves it!

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied:
Yeah, I think that's the one I'm going to go buy! The old-fashion wood side panel one. I know it will probably be more Wil's wagon for a while, since he's all about taking over, but it will be fun to pull both of them around in it. My goal this summer is to do a lot of activities outside...if only the weather would finally cooperate! It still doesn't feel like summer here! bawling.gif It was maybe 54 or so today. sad.gif

Anthony275 replied: get one of those chocolate kits that you make chocolate on a stick in the shape of pooh bear or whatever cartoons he watches on tv. you can make them different flavors or different types of chocolate to make it more exciting
