Yet another Poop question

MommyToAshley wrote: How often does your baby poop? Ashley has been on solids since 4 months. She used to poop every day or every other day. Now (she just turned 7 months) she poops about every 4 days. And, it has been really thick. She really hasn't eaten anything new because I have been trying to get this under control first. I have been making her cereal with diluted juice lately instead of BM to try and help her go more often, but it doesn't seem to help. So, just wondering if when they get older, do they poop less often?

I am sorry to always be the one asking the poopy questions. LOL biggrin.gif

ediep replied: not sure about that....Jason goes usually twice a day. I always call him a "poop machine"
All babies are different though. I'm sure the juice will help...oatmeal seems to make Jason go more frequently than just rice

Hillbilly Housewife replied: Hey! Zach is formula fed, and we supplement with everything from ceral to chicken casserole! He poops every day, sometimes 2 or 3 times, and somedays not at all. It's always pretty thick, and it's usually the color of dirty mustard. Not quite the yellow, but not quite brown either!

maestra replied: Jaci sometimes used to go 5 days without pooping, then let it all out. Our dr told us not to worry when we took her in, then she pooped all day long the next day! They said there's only a problem if she has constipated stools, where the poop is solid, roundish and will roll off the diaper. Jaci often has thick stools, since she started solids at 4 mos too. She recently has a few day bout of constipation. The dr said that we could always give her some stewed prunes or apricots to get her going a little more. Healso said diluted white grape juice. He said that bannanas and applesauce would stop her up- and she had been eating a lot of applesauce recently!

Btw- doesn't this solid food poop stink! wacko.gif Our dr. told us not to give her meats until 9 mos- to just stick to fruits and veggies for now. My friend says it only gets worse when they start to eat meat!

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
Oh MAN do I ever agree!!! puke.gif

dhoppygirl replied: I totally agree with the stinky poop!!! puke.gif
Peyton usually goes once a day and he usually ends up with a bath afterwards because it is soooo messy!! (It usually gets all over his clothes) Before solids he used to go 2-3 times a day.

PS...I've always wanted to use the puke icons biggrin.gif

MommyToAshley replied: LOL

And, yes I agree on the stinky poop. Before solids, she was exclusively BF, and the poop wasn't bad at all. But, boy did that change once she started solids!

It is interesting that you said applesauce and bananas will clog her up, she eats a lot of those. Maybe I will cut back on them and see if that helps.

Thanks for your help!

Schnoogly replied: Here's another good reason for us to wait for solids! Iain already has a lot of trouble with thick/constipated poops. He is 1/2 formula (good start) and 1/2 breastmilk. He usually goes every other day, sometimes every 3rd day and it's super thick. Maybe we shouldn't start with rice cereal? Definitely not bananas either. I just got some pear juice since he won't even taste the prune juice the doc recommended (we're trying not to use so many suppositories). The kid has good taste--I would never drink prune juice either!!

Ashley did great on solids for the first two-three months. It is just recently that she has had this problem. I am thinking it is all the bananas she is eating. If that stops 'em up, it could be the problem because she LOVES bananas. I am going to cut back on them and see how it goes.

Kaitlin'smom replied: Kaitlin poops every other day,(she is BF ) and she is nearing that 4 month b-day. SO now I re-think giving her bannanas to start. Maybe some other type of fruit would be better. Humm guess I will talk to her doc and do some more reading.

MommyToAshley replied: Update.... Ashley is more regular now. Thanks for all your help.

Unfortunately, I think it may have been all those bananas. banana.gif Which is sad because she loves them soooo much. Maybe it was a coincidence. I will give it some time and then give her some bananas agaub and see how it goes.

Thanks for all the poopy advice. LOL rolling_smile.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied: ewww but good to know. I was just gettin gworiied about Kaitlin she usually goes every other day but this time she held out for 3 days! She went this morning! banana.gif nothing new to her diet or mine. Maybe next week we will try some cereal or veggies, or fruit dunno we will see. She does like licking an Ice cub! its too cute!
