anyone gone natural and medicated?? - which did you prefer??

MomToMany replied: I've had both (not a C-section though). I MUCH prefer going natural. It was easier for me to keep my concentration & I felt I was in control of it, instead of the Dr. controlling the medication & the outcome. I went completely natural with #2 & #4. The others had a little help getting going.
jcc64 replied: I have 3 kids. For the first 2, I labored completely drug-free. With my dd, I had some sort of anaesthtic, although it wasn't an epi, it was administered by an anaesthesiologist. If I had to do it again, I would go naturally. Although the drugs certainly made it more comfortable, the side effects sucked (couldn't think of a better way to say it, sorry) and I couldn't even hold my dd for the first few hrs after her birth. Dh thought I was dying, and tbh, so did I. Even though the pain of natural childbirth was intense and sometimes seemed unbearable, at least I know it was organic pain, pain my body was built to withstand. I'd take that over the whacky, scary drug side effects any day.
A&A'smommy replied: I had a c-section but I think some of it was from being induced and my body wasn't ready yet. And I wish I hadn't gotten an epi because when it wore off I panicked!!
zdk753 replied: My first one was was natural. With my other 2 I had an epi. I preferred the natural one. Yeah the pain was unbearable, but it's nice to be able to feel the changes that are happining & to also be able to tell when it is time to push. Plus I hated being numb for hours after my babies were born.
5littleladies replied: I've never gone completely natural. With my first I had nubain an intrathecal, 2nd just one shot of nubain, 3rd 2 shots of nubain, and with the 4th I had an epi. My best experience so far was by far the 2nd-just the one shot of nubain. I felt most in control, and it was just very positive overall. With this most recent one I had the epi and while the side effects were kind of annoying (numb for hours afterward) I was able to walk and hold Lissie right away and I would honestly probably go that route again. I think. I guess we'll find out next time.
amymom replied: I went completly natural for both full term births so I am really not sure. They were both hard but... I was glad to be in control.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: my first I labored preetty much natural the whole time.... by the time I got the shot of Nubain (or Demerol), it was just about time to push...and it takes a little bit to kick in....
so.... I had 3 stitches. I felt the first stitch, sorta felt the second one... and I didn't feel the 3rd one.
My second - labored pretty much natural, again - I had some gas in a mask. It's not because the contractions were too intense, or even the pushing - it's because I could feel what I thought felt like my hips separating.... it wasn't during the contractions that were too painful.
Both times - I was just barely drugged.... I guess the thought of having reliefe helped more than the actual meds.
I would never get an epidural. Have you SEEN those NEEDLES?! Aw HECK NO! lol
MyBlueEyedBabies replied: technically i had an epideral with both but with Matt I went from 4 to 10 while they were placing it and he was born as soon as they told me to stop holding him in. they then had to numb me to do the stitches after because it still hadn't taken effect. That being said Katy's labor was sooooooooo much better. As my dr. said you don't get a medal for being in pain, so I wasn't
Mom2Boyz replied: I had an epidural with both of my boys, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat!!! Although I only got to enjoy it for about an hour with Caden, I got to relax and rest for that hour before I had to start pushing.
I really admire those of you who have gone natural , but it's just not for me. If I don't have to be in pain I'm sure not gonna be LOL
kit_kats_mom replied: My first was 12 hours of natural labor. I had a shot at delivery because they had to give me an episiotomy to deliver with the vaccum but other than that, no drugs. It was intense but I honestly went to another level and don't think it was that bad.
The fear I had with Lauren (my second) after the induction, talk of c sections etc and other problems that I figure were brought on because of the induction & drugs was tons worse. Sure the epidural was great but I still felt pain & it was crappy.
I at least have happy memories of K's birth and a sense of accomplishment. I also gained a better respect for my body after going natural.
gr33n3y3z replied: Rick I had a shot of something and i hated it ........ it made me so tired
John,Erin and Katie were natural births
CantWait replied: With my first (Robbie) I had a shot of demerol half an hour before delivery, it made me extremely sick to my stomach and eventually I threw up. When it was time to push, I don't remember a single thing. I don't remember him coming out, how long it took, etc....I remember them coming in with the baby when it was time to feed him
With Anthony I had a shot of something else which didn't decrease the pain at all, then gas, which again did nothing for me..that was all I had. I remember everything of Anthony's birth including how long it took to push him out (next to nothing), holding him the first time, Ron cutting the umbilical cord, me asking to bf him, etc....
Next time I would definetly go completely 100% natural.
kimberley replied: i have never birthed unmedicated but i did labor James without meds. obviously i preffered the epi for labor but to be honest.. i didn't need it. it was more fear than pain that made me beg for an epi and refuse to push without one. dumb, i know .
lesliesmom replied: Well, I my first (Leslie) was induced. I was going to get an epi but I was told by the anesthesiologist that because of some back issues I could not have one. So, I got a shot of Stadol. Made my a little loopy but it did help me relax, by the time I was asking for the next shot (which they didn't give me because her heart rate was in the normal range but on the low end- which is common), turns out about 15 minutes later I had her.
My second (Christopher) I had completely natural. I was asking for Stadol but they couldn't get the monitor lead attached to his head properly so they wouldn't let me have one until they had the monitor secure. Again, that was about 10 minutes before delivered him.
I just hope #3 goes as smoothly and I can go natural again. It was so nice not to have any side effects after Christopher (while the side-effects from Leslie were due mostly to the induction).
Mommy2BAK replied: I agree with what others have said, if I have a choice to not be in pain, I'm taking it!! The women in my family tend to be very itty bitty around the hips and I guess I just cannot image my 8lb. 6oz baby being able to fit through there without it being excrusiating pain
I think that is awsome that some can go natural, my mother and I are built very much alike and her doctor will tell you himself that she almost died during labor with my sister with no meds, she was told to stop having children b/c of it, so I'm obviously no going to tempt fate.
TeagansMom609 replied: I went about 9 hours without anything when I was in labor with Teagan, but I could only take so much and I finally gave into an epi. I honestly cant imagine giving birth without pain meds. There was a woman in the room next to me screaming bloody murder while I was nice and comfortable talking about eating Denny's in between pushes. I dont ever want to be in pain like that poor woman was. It made me upset to hear someone in that kind of pain. I asked the Dr.'s why she wasnt given an epi, and they said there wasnt enough time. Ugh, I cant even imagine..
TANNER'S MOM replied: Well, I have had 3..
And with Brittany I was epi.. I was a child. And scared to death.. I was in labor FOREVER and no progress... her heart rate was dropping.. and I was dialated to 3..lol So, they gave me the epi.. thinking I would have a C-Section.. But they also went ahead and broke my water.. and then I started progressing fine.. It was all very scarey to me. But after the epi.. it was Ok.. and the pain wasn't bad.
With Justin.. he was an Emergency..and he was fast.. and he was all natural and a month early.
Tanner.. I was induced.. and I wanted to try Natural.. but I was having trouble.. he was early too. And I was feeling the contractions and I told them I was having strong labor.. and they said the monitor showed NOTHING.. basically didn't believe me.. They gave me the epi getting ready for another Csection... and the edi was bad... 5 wrong needles.. everyone curved and wouldn't go in.. Randy passed out from the look of the needles.. and they never took effect.. they finally believed me when I had my dad go get the nurse and he crowned.. before the epi ever had meds in it..lol
So, I have had both.. I prefer natural and fast.. was that an option!
PrairieMom replied: I had worked the night before I went into labor so i was extremely tired. I had one shot of stadol, which made it so I could sort of sleep between contractions, but I still felt all the pain. I wouldn't do it again if I had the choice. labor wasn't that bad. I'm not scared to go through it again. i think the key is to stay relaxed. I went from a 5 to a 10 in the whirl pool tub in less than an hour! I love that whirpool tub!
My3LilMonkeys replied: With Brooke I was induced, had an epidural and an episiotomy. It was nice not having as much pain to deal with (I was still in some pain) but it made both my legs go completely numb and I did not feel up to standing/walking for any amount of time for 3 days afterward.
With Madison it was no drugs and I tore slightly. The pain was pretty bad (my DH still picks on me for the screaming) but I was ready to get up, shower and walk around 1-2 hours after she was born. I recovered much quicker.
If we decide to do it again....I won't be induced (unless necessary) or have an episiotomy (unless necessary). I would like to have some pain med. but probably not an epidural.
