Kaitlin voted yesterday in school and I am not sure how I feel about that. I mean she in almost 6, knows really nothing about politics except what she hears us talk about. She told us who she voted for and when we asked her why she picked him she said cause you are backing him.
punkeemunkee'smom replied: We voted in school and participated in a nationwide kids' vote campaign. It has been a class that we have been doing. I don't think it is a bad idea and maybe gives the kids an idea of how the process works.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: Not a bad idea, in theory.
Too much opportunity for brainwashing, though, in my opinion.
AlexsPajamaMama replied: I remember doing a mock election when I was in like 5th grade
lisar replied: Yes Lexi's school voted and McCain won.
stella6979 replied: I agree.
msoulz replied: I concur also. I guess it would reflect how the parents in the area voted. My 4th grader asked us many time for whom we are voting and I suspect he would do the same if given the opportunity.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: I was always told as a child when I asked my parents who they were voting for, that voting is a personal private decision and you don't share that information.
5littleladies replied: We have a kids vote in our town. Madeline is very excited to participate and Meg doesn't want to do it at all. I think it's a great way to teach them the importance of voting.
danahas4monkeys replied: Lexi ( in 1st grade) is, she told me yesterday. She said momma we are voting tomorrow I said oh really who ya voting for she said well I am not sure but I need to make an informed decision. I said yes you do. I think its good they are learning about these things.
PrairieMom replied: Ben is voting today, he is super pumped. Al went with us to vote this morning. She was super pumped too, because she thinks we are voting for "presents" not "presiDENT"
mom21kid2dogs replied: Olivia participate in the Nick Kid's Choose the President & they are doing a mock election at school.
I think it's funny how many people feel parents stand together on their voting choices. Although Stephen & I are both registered independents, he almost always votes Republican for pres and I almost always vote Democrat Guess Olivia will have to choose which parent she likes better!!!
3xsthefun replied: Kaitlynn's class voted last week.
PrairieMom replied: In our school they didn't go over the issues on the ballot, they just learned facts about the candidates, like, who has what kind of pets and their favorite colors and stuff like that. Did you know that MCCain has something like 42 pets? So I guess, if you like animals, he is your man .
Kaitlin'smom replied: see i dont think they gave them any information to go on to vote, not that I mind who won in her school its just strange to me to ask someone to vote on something they know nothing about.
I did ask if it was a secret ballot, she was not sure what I meant so I asked if they had to put there names on it or if it was read outloud. she said no to both, so on that I am glad.
A&A'smommy replied: are high school participated but I think 6 is a little young.. mostly I think they becasue they are too young to really decide why they are voting for a person. I could be wrong though but as far as my almost 5 year old I am not ready for her to have that part of her innocence taken away I want her to be a child first.
MommyToAshley replied: I actually think it is good to introduce them to the process in which our president is elected. I don't think that it really matters that they didn't discuss the issues or what each candidate stands for. What 5 or 6 year old is going to understand the issues anyways. I also don't think it really matters who wins, it is more about the process itself. Ashley learned basic facts about the electorial process like the presidential election is every four years and he can only be voted in twice in a row (8 years), etc. When they first started talking about elections, they passed a bulletin board in the hall with facts that had Obama and McCains photos posted. The teacher asked if anyone knew who these two people were and Ashley was the only one that knew who they were by their photos... I guess you can tell she comes from a family that discussed politics.
luvmykids replied: That's very similar to how the twins' school did it, they focused on it during library block and did learn about the candidates but not politically. I thought the whole process was great, and I love that they know a little about our government.
Their teacher was suprised that the twins did know some facts about each that they hadn't covered at school, she sent a note home that said "Pat on the back, mom and dad, good job with age appropriate current events!" and a glitter star
