calling all cheeseheads - breastfeeding while driving

bawoodsmall wrote: Does anyone know if you are allowed to b/f while in the car with your child? My sil is going to be traveling from there for xmas with a brand new(not even born yet) baby and she was wondering. Anyone know the laws? I know here you can.

jcc64 replied: You mean while the car is moving?

Kaitlin'smom replied: are you asking about WI laws?
can you clairfy, will she be driving or someone elce?

bawoodsmall replied:
yeppers. Seriously here you can do it. wink.gif Didnt because I never understood how that is legal but...besides the point.

TheOaf66 replied: that seems like it would be even more distracting than talkin on a cell phone

bawoodsmall replied: Someone else driving not her. I should have clarified. That would be sooooo dangerous.

luvmykids replied: I think personally I'd be too paranoid, legal or not, I'd rather pull over than take the chance that that would be the time something happened sleep.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied:
NO!!!!!!!!!!! ohmy.gif OMG, she would be in serious trouble. You have to pull over in one of the pit stops to feed. Just because we're "country" here doesn't mean you can pull a Britney. wink.gif LOL I don't have proof of the law, but I would be willing to put money on it. Not only could she get a ticket, but she may even go to jail for child endangerment.

bawoodsmall replied:
Yeah. I just need to know what the law says. If you can feed while someone else is driving. Thanks.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
No, children under age 8 need to ALWAYS be in a carseat/booster in a moving vehicle, that I know for sure. Like I said, she'd need to pull over into one of the offroad stops.

bawoodsmall replied:
Come on where is your sense of adventure? Lol... I would never do it either...that is just unsafe. We can seriously do it here...Not kidding I think.

kit_kats_mom replied: Ahhh, you are speaking of boobie surfing. Where the child is in the carseat and mom contorts her body and boobage to feed the child while the car is moving? yeah, btdt. It is painful and will result in many bruises. LOL However, as long as both parties are strapped in, I don't see where it would be Illegal.
Take it from me though, the cramps and resulting pain isn't worth it...just have DH pull over and nurse the kid at a rest stop.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
I took it as the child was out of the seat sitting on the lap being fed. unsure.gif

Oh yes...by the way we have a seatbelt law as well. All people in the car must be belted in or you will get a ticket. They have some catchy catchphrase for it "Dont click, get a ticket" or something like that. WI is very strict on vehicle laws. However, if you are belted in and the child is in the seat still all harnesed in still, I am sure it is perfectly fine. No different than giving a child a bottle in the car, which I've done numerous times.

Another BTW..."Boobie Surfing!". rolling_smile.gif

grapfruit replied:
I just got a total mental image from that. emlaugh.gif

I have a hypothetical for you then.

What if you're in a motorhome? (and DH or somebody is driving)

lisar replied:
Here the catch phrase is "Click It Or Ticket"

Boo&BugsMom replied:
Oh, maybe that's it!!!?

Calimama replied: LOL I would probably just pull over. wink.gif

luvmykids replied:
I've wondered that, my uncle and aunt have a converted grayhound bus and the ONLY seatbelts are the two front seats...I wonder if children under a certain age aren't supposed to be in them?

Anyhow, in NM backseat passengers don't have to be buckled in the back seat, so I'm guessing as long as the child is strapped in "Boobie Surfing" is legal laugh.gif

bawoodsmall replied: Thanks all. I will let her know. I still dont know that it is worth it. I would stop.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: If she can't pull over for some reason, have her pump and give a bottle. I admit, I have unlocked my own seatbelt and hung my boob over my baby, just to calm him down once. But it wasn't safe, I know. And I would NEVER take my baby out of his carseat while a care is moving, never.

jcc64 replied: Cary! rolling_smile.gif I also "booby surfed" (though only the baby was buckled- in NY, backseat passengers don't have to buckle) IN NYC!!!!! Anyone who's driven or walked in NYC knows that cars and pedestrians inter-mingle, and plenty of people got an eyefull! Totally forgot about that until Cary brought it up. The things we do to shut our crying babies up.....

~Roo'sMama~ replied: Even if it was legal, I would never ever take my baby out of the car seat to feed her! It doesn't take very long to pull over to nurse - why risk it? I've never "boobie surfed" as Cary calls it laugh.gif but there were times I would have if I thought I could pull it off. tongue.gif In MN you don't have to be buckled in the backseat if you're over a certain age so I could do that here. But taking the baby out of the car seat - NEVER.

grapfruit replied:
Same here in OH. Just the front seaters have to "click it or ticket it!" (that must be a nationwide phrase)
